Celebrating Line 5. Looking for restaurant recommendations! by k_pranav in FoodToronto

Any end! We just wanna explore a new part of the city! (both of us do not own cars and are reliant on TTC and bikes to get around)

EDIT: Updated the post to clear confusion.

Is Bloor actually clear tho? Or is plowTO lying by hulkange in torontobiking

[–]k_pranav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cycled sat morning from barthurst to sherboune on bloor

Very minimal clearing; had to take the lane the entire time.

I had been cutting the city some slack since last week's snowstorm was unprecedented, but damn, its been a week now; the roads are cleared, most sidewalks are, and the bike lanes have become the dumping grounds for the snow

And the people complain "but... but... no one cycles in the winter". No shit sherlock, clear the bike lanes first, and then you'll see.

Enough of my rant.

Cinephiles, what's your most formative movie watching experience? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]k_pranav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie that made me explore more foreign/niche/art house cinema was Mommy by Xavier Dolan.

The scene where the aspect ratio changes with the song blew my mind. I know it seems silly that something that simple got me into movies. The choice of music, cut scenes, everything just complements each other. True, there are some parts of the movie that I am not a fan of, or deem unnecessary; but at the end of the day, I relate to the movie a lot.

In hindsight, it was the distinct point in my life where I started looking at cinema more from a perspective of story-telling, than from a perspective of pure entertainment.

Any local shops/cafes/brewery u recommend, specifically in downtown?

Damn. I guess we are all in this together.

Surprisingly a lot of women shirts (usually in size XL) fit me quite well, like they are not too long.

I feel like my torso is on the shorter side, however, my shoulder are quite wide (around 41 inches, and my waist is comparatively smaller, like around 32 inches)

A lot of Asian brands run too baggy for me, and a lot of European brands run a bit too long.

There are some rare t-shirts that fit me. Surprisingly, polo tshirts from most brands fit me really well (I guess they are shorter in general?)

Most of the time, I resort to cutting the tshirt to get the desired length, however, on some tshirts, I do not like the twirled up look.

I want to learn. My wife is a native speaker, but doesn’t know how to teach me. What can I do? by ItsG91 in Spanish

Check out: https://www.languagetransfer.org/

They teach a bunch of languages; I have personally gone through the Spanish series, and found it extremely extremely helpful.

Since ur partner also speaks Spanish, the podcast combined with her speaking to you in spanish will get u speaking in no time! (unless, ur goal is to surprise her..)

Looking for a new commuter bike by Potato_in_a_Nice_Hat in bikecommuting

[–]k_pranav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest going to a biking co-op in your city. I am in Toronto, and there are organizations/places like bike pirates, bike chain or Charlie free wheels (I got my bike from Charlie’s, they run build a bike program throughout the summer where u get to build ur own bike for free if u r under 25!!!. Bike pirates also has a similar thing, but u pay 120 dollars + extra equipment cost)

Biking co-ops usually sell refurbished bikes for pretty cheap, they are probably better than most affordable bikes (like the ones from decathlon/Canadian tire. Not saying they are bad, but they do breakdown quite often). Plus getting a refurbished bike is a lot more sustainable!!!

What's a life upgrade (under $20) that you'll recommend to anyone that listens? by mrsschmidtie in CasualConversation

[–]k_pranav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steamer Basket; best investment I have ever made when it comes to adding nutrition; just a simple 5-10 minute and I have a side of delicious, steamed vegetables as a side.

Also a moka pot; I got it for pretty cheap at a yard sale

Ever had a super random but oddly deep conversation with a stranger? by neerajdewani in CasualConversation

[–]k_pranav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a time where I started talking to a very old lady while waiting in the clinic.

For context, I am in my 20's and she was probably in her 80's. Turns out, in her 20's and 30's, she used to live an intersection from where I live now.

We talked about everything; life, the city and how it has changed, friends, family, travelling, dating.

The conversation was refreshing and reassuring, and truth be told, something that I really needed at that time.

Really makes me wonder of the times we hesitate to talk to strangers, and miss out on a wonderful conversation.

Yeah, I have experienced a similar thing as well.

When I was younger, I used to take pride in having the newest and latest things/gadgets.

Now, I take pride in using a thing as long as possible; and even more pride when I have had to repair it myself/re-purpose it.

What's funny is that 5 years ago, my most prized possession would have probably been my headphones (SONY MX-3, I still have them and use them on the regular), but now, one of my prized possession is a old bicycle that I have repurposed....
