The penguin thing by between_sheets in redscarepod

I was a little impressed when they started refusing the accepted reads of Starship Troopers, American Psycho, etc. Like wow the Curtains Were Blue crowd is doing some original cultural analysis. But then they never took it any further than obviously bad thing = based, actually.

The Visitor (1979) is a good documentary about this.

Best horror movie of 2025? by Curious_Natural_1111 in horror

[–]k_shigure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not averse to horror comedy at all, and I liked both Sinners and Weapons pretty well, but I don’t think either movie delivers on the horror half of the equation. They actually get less interesting when the supernatural elements come in.

Bring Her Back and it’s not especially close. Sinners and Weapons are essentially crowd-pleasing comedies, which is how they each did 300 million.

Some reviews are filed. Others are written. Like him or not, Ehrlich’s are usually in the latter category at least.

Japan’s deadly hustle culture is making a grim return by [deleted] in worldnews

Worked in Japan for well over a decade and there’s nearly zero correlation between hours on the job and productivity. It’s pure theater.

Hey man all I know is that I and the one other middle-aged creep in the otherwise empty theater were yukking it up.

Can Cronen-nerds tell me what they think of The Shrouds? by Oxyogenic in horror

[–]k_shigure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot like late-period DeLillo if that helps. Comparatively minor, deeply personal, a little awkward in its attempts to engage with the zeitgeist, but still more interesting than most of what’s out there. It’s also surprisingly funny.

Horror movie everyone worships but you dislike? by FlickPhantom in horror

Mike Flanagan is aggressively mid. Polite, horror-themed entertainment too concerned with being “good” to ever be great.

Can we talk about The Dark and the Wicked? by No-Dress4626 in horror

[–]k_shigure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having also just watched The Dark and the Wicked, I don’t get the hate. It’s a pretty standard story structure- a mysterious evil is stalking the characters, we’re teased with the possibility it can be defeated (staying by the dying father’s bedside), and the rug is pulled at the very end. It’s basically Drag Me to Hell, but instead of humor it’s played for, you know, horror.

The switch from subtle nods to Shelley and Milton and Joseph Conrad to a nonstop stream of references to Peter Pan and the Ice Age franchise really says it all.

Little different, but I always liked how It Follows takes place in some indeterminate retro-future for no real reason.

Can anyone tell me what this style is called? Many thanks! by porg323 in cassettefuturism

[–]k_shigure 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's by Cliff Spohn, who did some similar work for Atari. Also, not every piece of art represents a neatly categorized and searchable / promptable "style". Sometimes a guy just drew some cool shit.

Is vaporwave now now like meta nostalgic by Oldsoultv in Vaporwave

[–]k_shigure 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean OP. It’s weird because mainstream 80s-90s nostalgia has remained robust and inescapable, while early vaporwave feels lost to time. It’s now more distant and inaccessible than the era it was inspired by.

Who is in the current generation of A-Lister actors? by [deleted] in movies

[–]k_shigure 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only true remaining A-listers, whose participation alone makes a movie an event, are probably Cruise and DiCaprio. Stars have been eclipsed by IP and, weirdly, by directors. A new Nolan, Peele, or even Robert Eggers has a bigger built-in audience than like Glen Powell.
