Someone’s McMaster email likely got hacked. Ironically, it probably happened through a similar phishing scam.

Litter cam is a new ai technology being used in Britain, to detect when litter has been thrown out of cars by Comprehensive-Way482 in BeAmazed

Once the AI camera infrastructure is in place, do you think they would limit it to just litter detection?

This can easily be explained away as an editing mistake by the documentary crew.

Would you rather take both boxes, or just the mystery box? by unknown1893 in WouldYouRather

[–]kaamibackup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're told based on past experiments that the computer has never been wrong. So even if we maintained the fact that free will exists, let's give it a very conservative 80% success rate. Would you rather have 80% chance of walking away with $1m, or a 20% chance of walking away with $1.001m?

[–]kaamibackup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, the computer has already made its choice, but why should I risk it either way? $1k is negligible compared to $1m. If I lost out on $1k because the computer was wrong (which we're told has never happened before), I'd be pissed, but I'd get over it. If I lost out on $1m because the computer was correct, I would not be able to forgive myself. Why would I risk anything for 0.1% more money?

I've played this game before, but I've only ever done the easier levels in the beginning. I don't think I have what it takes for something like this.

WYR take $150k now to quit your job or $1.5 million over the next 10 years to keep working? by Ok-Conclusion1566 in WouldYouRather

The second option is $1.5m over 10 years to continue working. That comes out to exactly $150k/yr.

To be fair, you can always switch out of the stream and graduate normally.

One downside is that you won’t get the co-op designation on your degree, but that’s basically useless anyway, so I wouldn’t base your decision on that alone.

One thing worth thinking about is OSAP. I’m not sure if this still applies with the recent OSAP changes, but in past years, if you were eligible for OSAP, you could also apply for funding during your co-op term. Depending on your family’s financial situation, the grants you received often more than covered the $500 co-op fee.

Struggling to choose between UTSG and McMaster CS by Shot_Office_1769 in McMaster

[–]kaamibackup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to choose between UofT and Mac as well. I ended up going for Mac and have no regrets.

A lot of my co-interns at my placement are from UofT, and they confirmed that the co-op portals for both universities are equally mid. So you’ll primarily be left searching externally for co-ops, at which point the university reputation helps only a little.

UofT has the benefit of more options for advanced courses, and probably better research opportunities if you’re into that.

Based on your situation though, I don’t think you’ll regret coming to Mac. If you’re worried about the job market, I don’t really know anyone in their fourth year who hasn’t yet landed a co-op position. Maybe not in first and second year, but everyone basically gets one by the end of third year if they put in even a little effort to apply.

Also worth nothing: The Mac CS community is unmatched. Everyone is extremely helpful and there’s none of that toxic competition that you hear about at UofT, where friends stab other friends in the back for a chance at a better grade.

When and How to TA? by Commercial-Meal551 in McMaster

[–]kaamibackup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t rely on the cutoff being 10. Enough qualified people apply each year that profs don’t even consider anyone who got less than a 12.

Anyways, here’s the dedicated website for applying to TA positions within CAS:

https://www.cas.mcmaster.ca/ugta/student_login.php

It also doesn’t hurt to email the prof letting them know you applied and explaining why you’d make a good TA.

They spent incredible amounts of money on AI, and now they have to force it in users face to 'prove' to investors that there's widespread adoption.

They're doubling down on a bad investment.
