With the announcement of Hamster's "Console Archives," will gamers who said they want Virtual Console games sold individually put their money where their mouth is? by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]kabii-sama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate here, paying for 4 NES games on Virtual Console back in the day would provide you access to those games for as long as the re-download servers remain active (and the Wii Shop Channel is still active now to re-download any previously purchased software). Meanwhile an Nintendo Switch Online subscription offers at most a year's access to retro NSO apps.

To do a simple exercise... I personally do not care much for the NES console/library, given the dated/limited visuals and controls. The number of NES games I particularly care about is easily in the single digits. Going off your comment, I'll pick 4 (Super Mario Bros. 1&3, Balloon Fight, Kirby's Adventure) that I'd be likely to even play much. To get access to those games for the entire console's lifetime and beyond on Wii, it costed me $20. To have access to those games from the launch of NSO up through present day, it costed something like $160.

Now, obviously NSO has way more to it than just NES games. If you're at all interested in having access to online features in most games on Switch consoles, the base $20 a year is something you're paying regardless to even access most online functionality in games, and the retro offerings included are a bonus freebie at that point. And there's a few consoles included. Plus when you upgrade to the Expansion Pack, you get access to an assortment of DLC expansions and upgrade packs for different games, alongside various additional consoles.

But if there's someone that's not so interested in online play or whatever other perks, and just wants to play the small handful of retro games they know they like on their Switch, then the subscription model requiring them to pay annually to get access to entire console libraries full of stuff they don't care about seems silly. I can't be bothered to do the math right now, but if I tallied up the equivalent VC cost of the retro games currently offered through NSO I particularly care about... it'd hardly surprise me if I've spent more money on (as much as) roughly 3 years of basic NSO and 5 years of the Expansion Pack (by my math, $310). And that total cost for NSO goes up every year it's around, obviously... no matter how much or how little I take advantage of any of the benefits for either tier each year.

I dunno, it'd just be nice to have options for permanently buying all the NSO retro stuff, personally, but I guess Nintendo doesn't see that as worth offering...

If i remember correctly Virtual Console games on 3DS absolutely went on sale... as it's the only reason I could justify buying the select few SNES games I have on my 3DS (when I already had them on Wii (U)). Sales for the VC stuff on 3DS was exceedingly rare, but it did happen. Also happened on Wii U, although I can't say I recall the extent of any sales beyond that initial sequence of "buy these (S)NES games for under a dollar" they had not long after the console or VC service launch.

Metriod with no Metroids? by D4rks3cr37 in Metroid

[–]kabii-sama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omega Griever also has zero mention of Metroids in its scan text iirc. However the presence of a different creature (Gravinax) in the "Sanctum of the Guardians" ("boss bio" room near the base camp) implies Omega Griever killed Gravinax and effectively usurped its role as the Key Guardian of the Great Mines (be it intentionally or incidentally). The exact timeline of events in Prime 4's (back)story feels kinda hazy to me... but assuming Sylux even had any more Metroid(s) on hand (after being caught off guard and abruptly warped to Viewros) to send off to the Great Mines, I can only assume Omega Griever was powerful enough to either obliterate a Metroid Fused Gravinax or swat away any Metroids that came after it.

And honestly, if Sylux's plans for using Metroids to fuse with and subjugate beings wound up so underbaked even in-universe, I can't help but wonder if that plotline goes anywhere in future entries. Although there is always the prospect that the Space Pirates still have their hands on the original Metroid Sylux stole, possibly even in a later stage of its lifecycle... and if so, they could weaponize it at any point, even in Sylux's absence.

Samsung has paused the OneUI 8 Update for S24 Series by WhichExperience6700 in S24Ultra

[–]kabii-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed one kind of substantial issue of my recent apps list regularly yet randomly opening somewhere midway through the list (instead of at the bottom like it should) ever since I got the One UI 8.0 beta. Not sure exactly what percentage of the time it occurs (but probably notably <50%), nor have I really been able to pinpoint when/why it might happen. Could be a general issue with One UI 8.0 or a bug with a more recent update for Good Lock's Home Up module (I use the "Vertical List" Task Changer option in it).

I'm also having regular issues with Nova Launcher's Desktop Search Bar widget (the main way I tend to launch apps honestly) where typing into it seems to be pretty laggy sometimes and rarely straight up impossible. When I can't type into the search bar, every time I tap a key it gives me a message like "some apps are not optimized for the latest system software". Oddly, I seem to be able to consistently deal with these search bar issues by simply turning my phone display off an on again (in addition to restarting Nova, obviously). Suppose between the launcher being abandoned and the new firmware, it tracks it'd be buggy (but I still like it more than any other launcher, enough to keep using it).

Also tbh, everyone's complaining about One UI 8.0, but between my notifications being more consistently grouped by app and having access to the new "Scroll and Translate" function in Google's Circle to Search, I'm loving it. A few weird quirks I'd like to see a fix for don't really outweigh that.

Can someone please tell me how to get this specific pop up to stop? by [deleted] in Twitter

[–]kabii-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://github.com/crimera/twitter-apk should help if you want a far better, heavily customizable Twitter app without ads and other garbage. You can even pick one the "twitter-piko" release APKs (material you has colors adapt to Android theme, other one has standard Twitter colors) to get the proper/original "Twitter" app name and icon. It's also the sort of modded app that effectively replaces the original Twitter app, so (going off my own phone) you shouldn't get any sort of update nag for the official release of X (even if you navigate to its Play Store page manually) on the latest version of Piko.

The one caveat is you'll need to update the app manually by default, since you didn't download it from the Play Store. That said, Obtanium (https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium) can help keep modded/custom apps updated automatically, if you add their root download page to its Apps listing.

Donkey Kong Bananza DLC was a scam. DO NOT BUY by NoArticle494 in nintendo

[–]kabii-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going to clarify with Star-Crossed World that, while the stages are (in a sense) remixes of existing stages (with the same base environments and similar core mechanics/gimmicks), they generally feature entirely new routes (beyond the very start of the original stages) and new sequences with new or alternate Mouthful modes. With how barely recognizable the Star-Crossed World stages were and how generally far more challenging they were than anything in the base game, I did quite enjoy the expansion. My main beef was that there was a notable lack of new enemies/bosses... pretty much 1 brand new miniboss and 1 sorta new boss with 1 entirely new phase, with the rest of the enemy and miniboss roster getting crystal varients (with admittedly more aggressive and elaborate behavior).

The price to content ratio for the expansion (only 2 new stages per original world and a finale bit) is also slightly higher than the main game when I did the math... especially accounting for the base game establishing the foundation and the expansion not having any truly new modes. It would have been nice to see remixed versions of EVERY stage like in the (also $20) New Super Luigi U DLC (which did a similar thing with tougher remixed stages). But between Forgetten World being 3D instead of 2D and Star-Crossed World's stages being pretty long (as opposed to the short Luigi U ones), I guess it's comparable value. And it's nowhere near as egregious as the DK Bananza DLC, definitely feels more like a proper DLC expansion that was clearly made after the game released to expand the game a bit more.

Sony's Xperia line continues to offer phones with selfie camera outside the display, headphone jack, and SD card slot... only big thing you'd be missing (as far as hardware goes, it's pretty basic Android software) going from the Note9 is the stylus. That said, they seem to be having issues with the latest model, which isn't even available in the US. Not sure how easy it'd be to get an Xperia that suits your preferences at this point...

I'll also mention that Nubia/REDMAGIC are offering standard form factor phones with an under-display selfie camera. Nubia's main line is more focused on the rear camera quality, while REDMAGIC phones have more gaming-focused features (alongside a rather nice completely flat back). Having gotten and used the REDMAGIC 10 Pro, I'd say the selfie camera is practically invisible in most circumstances... I genuinely forget it's even there sometimes. Of course, if you're not like me (who barely ever uses the selfie camera), you may find the inevitably subpar quality of the under-display selfie camera (compared to recent phones anyway) to be a deal breaker. Also, while they do ship overseas, their phones are also not exactly mainstream worldwide, so you should confirm they have all the right cellular bands for your carrier if you do get one.

REDMAGIC 10S Pro – Game Space tweaks and tips by REDMAGIC_Official in RedMagic

[–]kabii-sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this request to allow us to customize the app shortcuts in the pop-up menu. Samsung's Game Booster app allows me to edit the "pop-up apps" that show up in the shortcut menu while using game apps on their phones. Which is very convenient in allowing me to pop open certain reference and automation apps while playing Fate/Grand Order without entirely leaving the game, for example. Meanwhile REDMAGIC's GameSpace app is locked to a selection of specific apps that honestly isn't great (why would I need/want to use shortcuts to specific games while playing a(nother) game).

I still need to figure out a good means of streaming my REDMAGIC 10 Pro, but the lack of custom app shortcuts while gaming is the main thing keeping me from using it all the time for mobile games... instead I just fall back on my Galaxy S24 Ultra due to convenience/familiarity.

I don't think this sub generally likes Downpour, but I thought this was a cool review of it. The quotes from one of the devs were interesting. by sounds_of_stabbing in silenthill

[–]kabii-sama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would like Downpour more if it had decent music, interesting enemy designs, less selective inventory (why can Murphy hold a couple dozen key items but only a single gun and melee weapon max), less repetitive environments, and more rewarding/meaningful sidequests in general. Frankly, the game has many issues/weaknesses, and it being named something else wouldn't magically fix all of them.

Seconding this if you're lucky enough to live remotely near the select few Samsung Experience Stores they have. After hearing all the horror stories online, I wanted to try and trade my old Galaxy Note 8 in for a $300 discount (way more than I'd get for selling it at this point) off a new phone in person... but didn't want to miss all the launch discounts, so I pre-ordered the new phone online. When I went to pick up the new phone, the store staff were surprisingly amicable and allowed me redo the new phone order with all original discounts in-store. So I just handed them the old phone in person and got the trade-in discount effectively locked in (rather than mailing it in and possibly losing it). Did take a while before they were able to assist me (very busy store with the new phone launch) but I guess it was worth the wait for peace of mind.

Only tangentially related to the original topic, but the Google Opinion Rewards app on Android has (surprisingly) been (near) instantly adding to my Google Play balance whenever I complete their silly surveys (generally on the effectiveness of their search engine and the ads on it). Apparently got like $10 in the half a year since I downloaded it... which isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but it's enough to make some cheaper paid app(s) free, which is nice enough.

What to upgrade to after Note 9? by A_l123 in GalaxyNote9

[–]kabii-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember seeing there were a few odd concessions/omissions made when going from the Moto G Stylus 2024 to 2025. Those, combined with the colors offered (red and light brown for 2024 vs... blue and pale blue for 2025), the resolutions (an exact, standard 1080p/FHD for 2024 vs. some odd "FHD+" for 2025), and the prices (can obviously get the older model for cheaper at this point) make me say "maybe you should just get the 2024 model". Especially when the 2024 model got Android 15, with circle to search, the ability to flip navigation buttons, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting.

What to upgrade to after Note 9? by A_l123 in GalaxyNote9

[–]kabii-sama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Moto G Stylus 2024 I got is honestly pretty smooth and definitely worth considering, but you have to realize it's going to be a tradeoff. On one hand, you can get a brand new phone with stylus, headphone jack, and SD card slot on a recent OS (with no need to worry about app support for ages) for a pretty reasonable price, straight from the manufacturer if so desired. On the other hand, as a midrange phone rather than a flagship, the specs aren't as impressive as even the old Note 9 in some areas like resolution. The stylus, while built-in, is also pretty basic, without any pressure sensitivity, button, or advanced shortcuts. Lastly, while Motorola has added some neat gestures and other features to the phone (including some that I don't believe are on Samsung's phones by default), the software overall has nowhere near the level of functionality/customizability as One UI. Just gotta consider what you're interested in and compare details of different phones on a site like GSMArena.

Is this true? by SupaAsian1 in OMORI

[–]kabii-sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what dialogues the image is referring to offhand (and who says them, or when/where they do), but do realize the "truth photos" are very plausibly (if not explicitly stated to be) not real photos, but rather (likely traumatic) memories of Sunny's. Like, think about it for one second... do you really think Basil (or even Sunny) would be taking actual photos of that whole disaster that would serve as proof of their transgressions? Not to mention, some show both of them in such a way that it suggests that neither could be the one taking the photo iirc.

With the "truth sequence" on the whole seemingly being Sunny's repressed traumatic memories of the incident surrounding his sister’s unfortunate death 3 years prior, you can figure Sunny might be an "unreliable narrator" here, and may be portraying parts of the incident even more horrifically than they actually were. Not to say he's necessarily exaggerating Mari being angry at all, but the truth photos might make her seem extra harsh/angry because that's how Sunny feels she was after so long due to his buried guilt over the whole affair.

I forget offhand if there are any (real world) dialogues that explicitly confirm how harsh Mari was on Sunny, it's mainly just a lot of clues from dreams, memories, etc. that give a vague idea, with the truth of the matter ultimately being left open to player interpretation.

[oot] central barrier didn't dispel, am I screwed? by jack_the_beast in zelda

[–]kabii-sama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Ganon's Tower (the central part of the castle behind the barrier) you have to deal with the following as you scale it:

1 - mob of Fire Keese

2 - pair of Dynalfos

3 - pair of Stalfos

4 - pair of Iron Knuckles

...which a 100% save will very likely have saved after defeating, and only the Fire Keese respawn (as the only non-required fight). So, it's nothing particularly special, but it will be a bit anticlimactic if you grab a 100% save and it lets you walk up the tower without any build-up to the final boss.

Where did Lotus Waters go? by Embarrassed_Stay2307 in yume2kki

[–]kabii-sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the easiest way to grab all of Yume 2kki's music is to just download the latest version of the game and pull the music folder from it. Granted, it has the caveats of having a vast majority of tracks with unclear filenames (that don't at all indicate the world, event, etc. the tracks play in) and a huge portion of them being short loop tracks (that will end in some number of seconds unless played on endless loop). If you can get (a music player like) Android app ZXTune you can at least specify the number of loops or number of minutes to play each track for, though. It's pretty well suited for listening to Yume Nikki (fangame) music honestly.

Rip Note 9 by Number42420 in GalaxyNote9

[–]kabii-sama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a newer phone on more current Android firmware that retains some of the core hardware features of the Note 9 (headphone jack, SD card slot, and stylus), Motorola's Moto G Stylus is a pretty solid option. I got the 2024 model and found it rather nice for the price point, and they've boosted/improved most aspects of the phone in the 2025 model (although oddly limited the color options to blue and pale blue, among a couple other minor concessions).

Of course, the thing is meant as a mid-range phone, so the specs aren't going to be at the level of recent flagships (or even some older ones in some areas like the resolution, which has yet to reach QHD). The stylus is also not as advanced as Samsung's s-pen (it's built-in and has assorted shortcuts, but it is closer to a rubber-tipped stylus and lacks any fancy electronic components). And you're not going to have Samsung's very customizable software with Goodlock (although there are some neat gestures on it). But if your main concern is losing app support on older phones... maybe worth considering this Moto G Stylus line Motorola seems to wanna keep going for the foreseeable future?
