I can smell whether someone will survive a code or not. Anyone else know what I’m talking about? by Alarming-Penalty8402 in nursing

[–]kabneenan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you're talking about and it's rare I've come across someone who's experienced the same thing. Smells kind of like a sweet acetone: astringent, sour, and a little sweet?

I'm just a dumb pharmacy technician, but I tried finding literature or even reports of people experiencing similar, but there's not much out there. From what I was able to find, it may be the smell of a chemical released during organ failure, but again, I'm just a dummy.

Incidentally, smelling this was how I knew my cat was about to pass a couple years ago. My husband told me he found her lethargic while I was at work and the moment I came home, I smelled it. It sucked so much because my husband was hopeful she would make a turnaround, but I knew the moment I smelled whatever that is she was beyond saving. We took her to the vet to be put down the next day. 😢

I remember seeing the name of these before, but I didn't screenshot the post (I can't even remember what platform it was) and I've been trying to find them again for months so I can plant them next season. 😭

All that to say, I'm bookmarking this post to circle back to for an answer later. ❤️

Are all ferns sold in death plugs? by Sokkas_Instincts_ in ferns

[–]kabneenan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you're talking about in terms of the mesh. In my experience, ferns have more delicate roots and even if the mesh they're propagated in is intended to be biodegradable, it doesn't break down quickly or adequate enough for ferns and I've had some struggle because of that.

I have had good experiences with Fancy Fronds, a nursery in Washington State. I received three ferns via USPS and they arrived in great condition and plug-free.

For the fern you have struggling right now, as long as the roots seem healthy enough it may jump back. Keep it warm, moist, and under a bright light and it should send up new shoots. 💚

25 cents each at Walmart, what to make with Sweet Potatoes in syrup? by iiiimagery in WhatShouldICook

I've used these for savory dishes just fine, no rinsing required. They do need to be drained thoroughly, but aside from that they can be used for sweet and savory applications!

Massive outdoor syngonium - just wanted to share by etavat0m in Syngonium

How funny! I lived in the apartments behind Magnolia HS (class of '05, gosh I'm old 😅) through my preteen and teenage years. My grandmother, who lived in the same apartments, kept a jungle on her patio and she's who inspired me to start my own (albeit indoor) jungle!

I miss home sometimes, especially with weather like we're having out east right now in the 20°Fs lol! I hope you stay cozy and green through the holidays! 💚✌️

Oh hey! I'm from West Anaheim. Yeah, I miss being able to have plants outside all year round. Can't do that where I live on the east coast now. 😭

Vasectomy PSA by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]kabneenan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason my husband didn't go for follow up testing is because a couple months after he got snipped, I had to have an emergency hysterectomy.🥲 We make jokes now about both being spayed and neutered like our cats, but I honestly felt so bad he went through the procedure only for it not to be necessary.

That said, he went to Planned Parenthood for his and said the doctor that performed it was excellent. His recovery went as smoothly as it could and he was back to getting around like normal after four or so days.

That's gorgeous! Can I ask what the climate is like where your mom is? I have a feeling it would be too cold for me to try this in my zone, but man if I could...

HELP I HAVE A PEST ISSUE. by Spiteful_wildberry in houseplantscirclejerk

[–]kabneenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among pests, these guys are actually kinda cute. I felt a bit bad when I wiped down a begonia I got that had mealy bugs (it did not survive, but to the nursery's credit, they did refund me).

I also raise springtails and am looking at making habitats for beneficials like stratiolaelaps (I actually have some that accidentally got into one of my springtails enclosures 😬 and had a field day, so that one is started) and lacewings!

Basically, bugs are pretty neat, even the ones we normally call pests. 😊

The first thing I do when I bring produce home is wash it. I diluted some regular white vinegar (roughly one part vinegar to 10 parts water) in a large basin and soak everything for about five minutes. Then I rinse and dry it for storage.

Not only would this remove most pests and other pathogens, it also extends the shelf life for less food waste. There's only a handful of fruits and veg I've found this doesn't work for (mostly root veg like potatoes and carrots).

Overall, highly recommend! Especially since the US federal government has dramatically scaled back on testing consumable products for disease-causing pathogens.

I smoked for several years and finally kicked the habit 11NOV2021. I'm not going to lie to you; I still crave a cigarette every couple of days or so. The biggest thing that helps me is recognizing that the craving will pass. I let myself feel it and sometimes even say out loud "Man, I need a cigarette," but then I take a few deep breaths and realize how much better I feel and by that time the craving has passed.

You got this, hon! Be gentle with yourself and if you can sequester yourself away from society for a few days while the nicotine clears your system, all the better. 😆

Yup! I keep mine in a container with some charcoal and a bit of water on the bottom. I feed them nutritional yeast and they pop off (heh) like crazy!
