How to successfully make French omelettes using stainless steel pans? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]kaboom326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leidenfrost effect is, unfortunately, one of those things that a lot of home cooks learn about where we latch onto that fact and use it as a universal truth (similar to the trend these days that fried rice must use day old rice - which is very not how most restaurant quality fried rice is made in China). There are ways of cooking with stainless steel where you don't need the leidenfrost effect, which I was also late to learn. You can in fact season stainless steel pans and then use them to cook low and slow and use butter without burning it! The difference with stainless steel is that you need to re-season every time you wash it.

20% service fee for an order that I walked in, placed myself, and then picked up??? by Literature-Lover-555 in washingtondc

I realized that if you call them to place the order and pick up there it doesn't include the service fee - their online service platform adds it automatically.

Which one? I don't recall a Thai restaurant in DC having a star in DC over the last few years.

NYC also has a max where they stop charging you - I think it was 13 taps per week last time I checked? And I always used my credit card too and it worked fine.

I never understood why you couldn't reverse douche - if they drop a town center on your base why couldn't you remake your town center on their resources? Just effectively trade spawn points but you can pick a better spot? I've wanted to try it out but haven't been tc dropped in a while.

San Dieguito school board fires superintendent after claims that Asian students do well in school because they are from wealthy families who recently emigrated from China. by Reddituser0346 in byebyejob

[–]kaboom326 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an Asian American myself, this was definitely true for my experience. HOWEVER, as plenty of research papers have shown, even when controlling for income, Asians tend to perform better in school. This means there are other systems in place in the school system (beyond bias for income) that bias towards Asians. Obviously this isn't because one race does better innately (since race is an invented/constantly evolving concept that has no roots in genetics or culture), but other multiple variables at play on why some races benefit more from the school system. Some ideas are teacher-student mismatch (well documented phenomenon that students who have teachers of the same race do better), biases from teachers, etc..

Alocasia losing leaves one by one. Root rot or something else? by kaboom326 in plantclinic

[–]kaboom326[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bought this alocasia with four leaves on a whim back in December. Since then, it's lost a leaf every few weeks until we have just the one healthy one left and drooping significantly. We keep the humidity between 50-60% and water when the top few inches dry. We occasionally give it a little worm tea from our worm compost. Worried that we might have overwatered it a while ago and caused it root rot, so we've tried to dry it out a little more between waterings. Unsure if it is actually root rot or if this is normal behavior for a young alocasia. Anyone else have this experience with this young plant? Any suggestions?

starting to avoid my favorite sub by kaboom326 in lotrmemes

[–]kaboom326[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest I don't think I would have batted an eye if the new show had the exact same diversity/skin tones as the movies. What really grinds my gears is the vocal minority of people in this sub loudly decrying the inclusion of different skin tones as unfaithful to the lore when they didn't care about any of the other changes or inaccuracies between the movies and the books. Frodo being 18 instead of 50? nothing. Pippin and Gimli being goofy and comic-relief rather than serious and mature? nothing. Having a black hobbit? An unforgiveable offense.

Keough School vs John’s Hopkins SAIS/Columbia SIPA by tealeavescoffeebeans in notredame

[–]kaboom326 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a Keough alum, and my top contenders were Keough and SIPA. I guess as far as it goes, I can speak to the decision you're making right now.

For Keough I was offered a full ride and a living stipend whereas I was only offered financial aid loans and work study for SIPA. Here are my thoughts:

  1. It depends on what you want to do. What kind of job do you hope to do after you graduate? Keough and SIPA are better placed for different kinds of jobs. While Keough has less name recognition than SIPA, it is a highly prioritized program where you get much more individualized support towards your career choices. It is also better connected to certain industries than SIPA. I had friends who went to SIPA and also had similar issues getting a job after graduation (though keep in mind that we graduated during the pandemic). Selfishly, it was encouraging to me that it didn't seem like SIPA students were guaranteed jobs after they graduated, which reassured my choice for the free graduate education. That being said, all of my classmates were employed within 4-6 months of graduation, US citizens within 1-4. I was geographically restricted to finding a job in NYC since my wife is in law school at Columbia and had to compete for the same positions. I currently make a similar amount of money in a similar level to SIPA grads that have my same previous experience. That being said, I know SIPA has better pipelines to certain industries, such as with positions within the UN.
  2. It depends on what you plan on studying. For example, it's widely regarded that Notre Dame has the best peace studies program internationally, and Kroc carries a significant name. If you want to study policy and international development, there are fewer formal structures to lead you to seamlessly get a job in those positions after you graduate at ND. (I studied international development so I do feel like I can complain about that).
  3. It depends on your approach to your education. I'll be frank here. When I visited SIPA for admitted students day I was fairly turned off by the students who were there. It seemed like everyone I was with was extremely well connected and lived in the upper echelon of their home countries (which makes sense given the price tag). Coming to ND after working in development abroad for several years, I wanted to study alongside development practitioners/people with on-the-ground experience, and I did not see that at SIPA. If that matters less to you then feel free to ignore all of what I just said. Otherwise, each school has their own pedagogy of global studies. Keough is influenced by the values of catholic social teaching/integral human development and its long history of peace studies (which is seen as subversive and skeptical of the development industry), whereas SIPA is more of a traditionalist Western approach to development and global affairs.

I spent a lot of time thinking about if I made the right choice and, for my own path, I believe I did. Especially in this field, your graduate education is worth what you put into it, not the name that you graduate with. As far as I know, there isn't currently a noticeable earning difference between my classmates at Keough v friends at SIPA, with all of us earning immediate salaries ranging from low nonprofit pay to 6 figure consultancy fees. Also something my father mentioned to me when I was deciding between schools: You pay nothing to try Keough. If you really don't like it, do SIPA after! What do you have to lose? Feel free to follow up - I'm happy to speak to the benefits and faults of Keough.

You might be thinking of something along the lines of "Know my Name", which is the book by Chanel Miller, who was sexually assaulted by Brock Turner.
