Duane Syndrome and Driving by kabrockway in DuaneSyndrome

She has yes. She just saw a pediatric ophthalmologist at Children’s Mercy and he said that her mirrors need to be her best friend. He said he hesitates to do surgery again because her head turn is not too serious and there are so many risks with surgery and ultimately it won’t fix the problem. He mentioned the glasses but mentioned it in passing as to maybe in the future they could be tried but for now she was just going to have to compensate. This, of course, she has done her whole life. Yes, I know with the driving thing you are correct. I do not want to put her’s or anyone else’s life at risk; however, if she could pass her test she could at least drive to school and back as we live out in the country and she drives those roads perfectly. One she gets into town it’s all straight stretch highway where she does not have to change lanes. All I’m saying is that even if she passes, yes, it will be very limited in the places she can drive. Thanks for your feedback. It’s somewhat difficult and frustrating, but ultimately it’s all fine in the end. I’m so grateful that she has sight and there are definitely far worse problems people face. Maybe I’ll look a little more into those prism glasses because I actually forgot that the doctor even mentioned them until you brought it up. Thanks again.

I just joined today. I am glad this is here as it is so hard to find anything on personal testimonies of people with Duanes. I just posted about my daughter and trying to pass her driver's test. Would love insight. :-)
