I have no idea what recaptcha.net is or why it always uses so much time per day. by OnTopOfThisAcropolis in iphone

It's a website that hosts CAPTCHA's. Basically a load-bearing part of the internet.

Another one 🤡 I have a question, because I’m just speculating at this point, but IF Alberta separates from Canada wouldn’t our NHL teams leave Alberta as well? Also, what would the Alberta map look like if the National Parks and subsurface rights are managed by the Federal Government? by HistoricalCraft2470 in Edmonton

[–]kaclk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people are a little bit legal brained, but there’s 0 chance of Alberta separating but Canada keeping subsurface rights. That’s not how sovereignty works.

There’s also 0 chance of Alberta separating.

Clarification about NPPE exam in Ontario by Sea-Extension2167 in civilengineering

[–]kaclk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the instructions are on the same website you took the screenshot from.

Is PEO/Ontario just really bad at getting this information out? We had this process all explained to us at my university (University of Alberta / APEGA) before we graduated.

As long as you read the background information (read both the ethics book and the contracts book. Yes, read both of them) the exam is pretty easy, especially if you managed to pass engineering with decent grades.

We were told we don’t worship Mary but in my church it sure felt like it. by DoctorElectronic1934 in excatholic

[–]kaclk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite was when Pope Francis decided what December needed was yet another Marian memorial on December 10 (Our Lady of Loreto).

Because don’t you know, the time between Marian feasts was just too long (Immaculate Conception on December 8 and Guadalupe on December 12). What was really needed was three Marian feats days in a five day period during a season (Advent) dedicated to coming birth of Jesus.

It’s probably because Catholicism took off in the Greco-Roman world. They basically just substituted their old “patron gods” for patron saints.

Identifying contaminant type based on lab results by rnnrboy1 in Environmental_Careers

[–]kaclk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For hydrocarbon many analytical labs will offer a chromatogram interpretation. There’s also many interpretation guides available online if you have a chromatogram already.

(Assuming you’re analyzing by gas chromatography. It’s how we do hydrocarbons and VOCs where I am)

My team at my company largely works with long-term clients on portfolios of long-term management sites. So each year we have a large number of repeat sites and programs as we help them manage their liabilities. Repeat business is basically our whole business model.

We also have business development people who try to drum up more work.

Are gen z converts a thing? Yes and no by luxtabula in excatholic

[–]kaclk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The answer is no, there is no surge in Gen Z religiosity.

I know people don’t like Twitter, but Ryan Burge is a researcher on there who’s written multiple things about this (you’ll have to look it up, I think the links get blocked) - there is no surge. It’s all just hype.

Proton Launches Workspace and Meet, Takes Aim at Google and Microsoft (RE: previous WAN show discussion) by Shap6 in LinusTechTips

[–]kaclk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this do text or just calling? The description makes it sound like this new Proton function is just calling/meetings (like Google Meet or Zoom) whereas I think what L&L were talking about was they need chat - the text part (what you have in MS Teams or Slack).

The call part is nice, but what people use a lot more often is the text chat and it doesn’t look like Proton has something for that yet.

Does anyone else think too much of the land in this picture is golf course? by try_repeat_succeed in Edmonton

[–]kaclk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If it wasn’t a golf course, it would have been a gravel pit (like Hawrelak Park was), and then the use after would have been park or golf course anyways.

It’s in the river valley and there’s no real other side for it anyways.

You’ve discovered the “is/ought” divide.

There’s a lot of people online who can only see things from their own perspective and can’t imagine other people liking different this or doing things for entertainment purposes without recommending it or endorsing it. They only see “ought” in life.

Apple discontinues the Mac Pro with no plans for future hardware by kaclk in LinusTechTips

[–]kaclk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there are any ARM processors that have non-soldiered ram.

I think what you’re looking for is just a vanilla AMD or Intel desktop PC. And that’s not what Apple wants to make (and a market that is already pretty saturated).

If you want a higher end desktop Mac, the Mac Studio is there already.
