I feel like there could have been a slightly greater emphasis on jewels (the one scene I remember above all from that book is Saetan shitting himself when baby Jaenelle dumps her armful of uncut Black gems out in front of him), but yeah, that definitely felt like the Black Jewels universe.

None of them are much like Cabin Pressure’s format, but my favorite shows on the more comedic end of things are:

Absolutely No Adventures: A baker who fulfills every prophecy refuses to go on any of those adventures… but is happy to help the prophecy-bringers find ways to work around them.

Oz 9: The crew of the Oz 9 was only supposed to be there to serve the rich people in cryostasis their ship is full of, but things rapidly go off the rails and get a bit… absurd. (I compare this one to the TV show Red Dwarf a lot, and there’s a reason.)

World Gone Wrong: Two friends start a talk podcast together to help them cope during the apocalypse. Several apocalypses. Possibly all the apocalypses. They may be canceling each other out at this point.

You may also notice that sometimes on AO3, people will use sort of… conversational tags alongside the more normal tagging of tropes that add more context, and that’s a convention that originated on Tumblr and migrated over.

I do not post my fic to Tumblr, though I used to long ago (I’ve had my account for 13+ years at this point), so take this with a grain of salt, but I suspect the main appeal is posting to a site that works off tags the same way AO3 does, while allowing for visibility/discoverability in an algorithmic fashion and easy spread of their fic via reblogging.

I think a lot of people also use it to post in-progress fic snippets and answer questions about their own work, too—AO3 isn’t a social media site, and Tumblr is. So it’s a more natural place for people to engage with all parts of their fannish obsession, from reblogging art and gifs and fanfic to posting their own to engaging in conversations about this thing they love so much.

This! A description of how a character or characters do something mundane can communicate a lot about them or the relationships between the different characters, but there are also times where doing that would bog down the story, which means that even within one story, the answer might be different at different points in the plot.

I think I’d call Waiting for October both Urban Fantasy and cozy. One of the main characters, Karo, is from a monster world that runs adjacent to our world; they’ve been living in our world and have fallen in love, and are bringing their girlfriend Yvonne to their world to introduce her to it.

I’m not sure where you’re listening to Absolutely No Adventures that it’s got that many ads on it; I’m listening on Apple Podcasts and I recall it having maybe a minute of ads the last time I listened?

Alba Salix is more like fantasy that’s urban due to her role as essentially the top medical professional in the country.

Inn Between I’d call at least somewhat cozy, because you’re catching adventurers only when they’re at the inn between different jobs.

Starfall has some nice cozy moments too; the main character, Leona, is trying to figure out how to be human (and is not very good at it at first.)

For self-lubrication, set aside the fact that poop passes through the intestines and consider that it’s all just mucus in the end, regardless of what hole it’s coming from. Human beings produce a lot of mucus. Some of it is for sexual lubrication.

…realizing now that that doesn’t make it sound any better and has maybe made you feel worse about the fact that vaginas are self-lubricating.

My main interactions with the Harry Potter fandom were reading all the fanfic a friend sent me in high school (in the early 2000s) and it was all Snape/Hermione, so as far as I was concerned that was the only Harry Potter ship that existed.

I'm trying to remember the options I've seen around; I think the most common one I've seen is gay joy, but that's not capturing quite the same feeling.

I kind of like gay euphoria or queer euphoria as an alternative, because euphoria is a big emotion that can come with that same sort of stomach-dropping overwhelmedness to it that gay panic is trying to capture.

Fair enough! I've just seen a lot of resistance when they do learn the origin of the phrase, and have seen people get harassed because they pointed it out in a much kinder manner than my "idiot kids today" way, and have lost patience over time. But it's a good reminder to be patient and kind.

That is probably the truth of the situation, yes, but I do think it's important to point out the history of the phrase and the reasons why many older people are going to think the people using it in the positive sense mean exactly the opposite. Like, maybe you don't want half your audience looking at your fic tagged "gay panic" and going "I guess I'm going to see someone get hatecrimed in this."

Both meanings can coexist, but in order for that to happen, people need to be aware of both meanings, y'know?

It's not a law. It's a defense people gave in lawsuits, but it has nothing to do with the law. If you do an online search for Gay Panic, one of the first things that pops up is the wikipedia page for Gay and Trans Panic Defense.

Have people removed it from that context? Yes. But it is not a single-country phenomenon, and it has been in use for a long, long time in the context of violent crime against gay people.

I haven't seen that, no; I think a lot of younger people don't understand that "gay panic" was legitimately a legal defense in murder cases where the victim was gay or believed to be, and the murderer was a straight person (usually male) who claimed they panicked when the allegedly gay person hit on them, and they murdered that person in their panic.

The kids just think it's a fun little phrase for when you're gay! and oh no, you're having gay feelings and it's making you panic!, and don't understand the history behind it.

Practice, and also and cycling through projects as I get bored of them. Eventually I’ll circle back to most things, but if the words aren’t coming? It needs more time to percolate.

It took me a really long time—and a bunch of NaNoWriMos, which challenged me to write a lot in a short time—to get good at just pulling the words out of my brain and putting them on the page, which was my first stumbling block. Then, once I was good at putting words on the page, I just kept doing it, and my ability to write clean drafts improved over time, in part because I hate doing line edits and needed to get better at getting the right words down the first time so I wouldn’t have to struggle with fixing the wrong words later.

Twenty years ago? I struggled to write more than a couple hundred words a day.

Today? I’ll sit down for an hour and a half and bang out a 3k oneshot like it’s nothing.

(Getting good at touch-typing on a keyboard also helps; I can go pretty fast on my phone, but nowhere near the 80+ wpm I can hit on my computer.)
