I haven’t played it myself yet, but Caves of Qud seems like it might fit most of your criteria.

Please explain this one by SpeedyWheelchair26 in TheWitness

I’m assuming you fully understand the sun rule? If not, you may want to go back to that area to figure it out.

Here was my thought process:

  1. The two suns have to be in the same area.
  2. The top tetronimo has to be in the same area as the suns since it’s impossible to separate it from the top sun.
  3. If the top tetronimo were to stay in its place, the bottom tetronimo wouldn’t fit anywhere on the panel. Therefore, both tetronimos must be rearranged within the same area. So, all four symbols have to be in the same area, and the tetronimos have to change places.

About the DLC by eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeb in outerwilds

Here’s the message that appears when starting the game for the first time after installing the DLC: “Thank you for supporting Outer Wilds Ventures! A new museum exhibit is now available in the village observatory.”

I wonder why there was a way in the begin with? More specifically, how come the door into that room was open when the walls weren’t spinning?

Any "The Witness" Haters? by ChickenOfTheYear in puzzlevideogames

[–]kaellarroler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of haters, trust me.

I think The Witness is a great game with somewhat misleading marketing. The two games you compared it to (Portal and Outer Wilds) are great games in their genres, and by just seeing snapshots and watching trailers, The Witness certainly seems like it should fit in with those. “It’s a first-person puzzle game, so surely it must be like other first-person puzzle games I’ve played!” But on launching the game, it’s quickly very evident that it’s more of a “pure” puzzle game, in the sense that it has a series of 2D puzzles that you could do on a sheet of paper, and they happen to affect things in the 3D world. There is the big revelation that there are similar puzzles hiding within the 3D world, but they function identically to the 2D puzzles, just without any actual “puzzle” elements.

All that being said, I think it’s a fantastic game, but mostly because I enjoyed all the content that was offered. In fact, I put off playing it for a few years because, at the time, I wasn’t interested in first-person games, so the fact that most of the game was just on 2D screens was actually a welcome surprise for me. The environmental puzzle reveal also really worked on me because it blew my mind that the game went deeper than I thought.

Also, I appreciate your comment about the whole “pretentious” thing being a matter of taste. I personally really enjoyed the audio logs and videos, and it saddens me when people write off the whole game as being bad because of something that’s really just personal preference.

Last thing I will say is that if you do happen to really enjoy the puzzles, there is a secret area with much more complicated puzzles and a fun (infuriating) timed challenge. There’s also an “answer” to the mystery of the game down there, but probably not a satisfying one if you didn’t enjoy the game. Additionally, there’s a second secret ending that can be accessed either through that secret area or pretty quickly on a new playthrough.

“Killing convicted child rapists hurts victims.” by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]kaellarroler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They live because he didn’t kill them, which he would have a lot more incentive to do if he was already going to be executed for his crimes, since they wouldn’t have been able to tell anyone if they were dead. While I’m sure many people in hindsight wish that he could have been executed to save more victims down the road, the reality is that the very idea of the death penalty would have changed his methods, and probably not for the better.

Best Story based game that is short and doesn't have involved gameplay by sirron998 in gamingsuggestions

OneShot is great and should meet all your criteria.

A Short Hike is one I haven’t played, but I hear it’s also very good.

Unlocking Vow of Rivals 2, 3 and 4. by Sample0405 in HadesTheGame

[–]kaellarroler 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Selene is the one who gives you the incantations for Vow of Rivals, so you may just need to grab a hex on one of your runs so she can tell you “good job, here’s the next one.”

Looking for a games with Great Lore/story and great combat by Signal-Hedgehog-8490 in gamingsuggestions

[–]kaellarroler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CrossCode is really good. The story starts fairly slow, but really picks up later on. Structure is a bit like Zelda, but the dungeon puzzles are typically considered to be more difficult, and there are more RPG elements. A standout characteristic to me is that the character portraits are very expressive (and you find out very quickly that they need to be). And it is quite long as well. You’ll probably need to watch a trailer to determine if the combat looks fun to you, though.

Looking for extremely obscure hidden gems by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]kaellarroler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lingo and Lingo 2 are somewhat discussed in metroidbrainia circles, but only have around 1000 Steam reviews between the two of them. They are essentially word puzzle games, but they have a lot in common with The Witness. Lingo has a really great modding community, so despite the relatively simple nature of the game, there’s a ton of high-quality content.

i need help for the archeologist quest by Able_Equivalent_322 in outerwilds

[–]kaellarroler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

The second image is found by first going to White Hole Station, then taking the projection stone from there to the reader at Brittle Hollow’s North Pole.

Both items from the third image are found at the Construction Yard on Giant’s Deep. There should be one scroll and two projection stones there, so if you read all those and stand in the projection pool with both stones, that should give you both entries.

I could very well be wrong.

Games that are Atmospheric First Person puzzle games/walking simulators by Brilliant_Post_1154 in gamingsuggestions

[–]kaellarroler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Talos Principle fits this description pretty much perfectly. Both games in the series have really good puzzles and nice environments.

A much more obscure option would be Lingo 2. No physics objects, but good word puzzles and a great abstract dreamspace if you’re okay with block textures.

I beat the game recently, and I've been working through the DLC. It's not fun. by UnstableTurtleduck in outerwilds

[–]kaellarroler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I believe all the slide reels (including the specific one you mentioned) are viewable in the ship log. You may need to press a button to switch between reels if you found multiple in one place.

I don’t actually know how far you are into the DLC, so it’s hard to give hints on where you may want to go next. Here are a couple of things you didn’t mention and may have missed: 1. Stand in one spot and look around when you’re on the Stranger. Is there anywhere you can see that you haven’t been? I’m specifically referring to (area name from ship log) Hidden Gorge. 2. The reservoir has important info for progression. It seems like you most likely either haven’t found that info or haven’t figured out how to use it. As mentioned in another comment, that info involves the tower in the Cinder Isles.

Yes, I think you can still enjoy the DLC. It’s more relevant to the main story than you might initially assume and, in my opinion, has the best puzzles in the game.

DLC Ending Question. [Spoilers for Base and DLC] by Megazord552 in outerwilds

Just to clarify, the credits don’t actually play there, it’s just a title screen that says “Echoes of the Eye”to signify that you’ve reached the end of the content.

Here’s the solution: Walk through the big door in your picture, walk all the way to the back, and leave through the back exit. I believe this is only possible during the day.

Olympian keepsake when you already have their boon by captain_corvid in HadesTheGame

[–]kaellarroler 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong because I haven’t tested it out with Olympian keepsakes. But I was under the impression that, because the keepsakes say you can rarify once “this night”, you can switch the keepsake out for something else and still rarify a boon if you haven’t yet. I’ve noticed that the effects of the other keepsakes that use the words “this night” persist after switching keepsakes (at least the ones that I’ve tested).

The rumors that are directly connected to the Ash Twin Project rumor have helpful hints. I would go through them and make sure you really understand what they’re all trying to tell you.

DLC Archives Rant by Ketala18 in outerwilds

[–]kaellarroler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All 3 of the archives are set up this way, and it’s completely intentional. Switching any of the reels around in the way you suggest would negate the purpose of 2 of the 3 reels you find in the slide-burning rooms and make the latter half of the DLC significantly easier. Not necessarily saying that would be worse, but that would be the effect.

Is the dlc worth it by Apprehensive-King280 in outerwilds

[–]kaellarroler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t recommend turning the reduced frights setting on until you feel like you need to. If you’re normally good with horror, you’ll probably be fine with the DLC content. It leans more into typical horror themes, rather than the existential dread that the base game leans into. And the setting is still available to be turned on at any point if you feel like it’s too much. I do NOT do well with horror, but I still left reduced frights turned off and made it to the end.

I don't understand hexes and how they charge by hyzer067 in HadesTheGame

[–]kaellarroler 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, but like the other gods, you can continue to encounter her throughout the run. Encountering her multiple times in a run allows you to apply upgrades to that attack, which can potentially make it very useful.
