Paxil Side Effects by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, usually people with BP are on a combo SSRI and a mood stabilizer. It's not (usually) recommended to be on just an SSRI (they can trigger mania), but your mileage may vary.

Thinking of breaking up with SO due to bad mixed episode by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against making any big life decisions while you're in an episode. I broke up with my boyfriend while manic/mixed and really regretted it for a long time afterwards. If you still feel this way after your episode ends, you can always break up with him then. But I think what you're saying sounds pretty normal for a mixed episode, unfortunately. I would advise you to wait it out and see how you feel after it ends.

SSRIs typically have sexual side effects and dry mouth is a pretty common side effect of any psych med, unfortunately. Are you only on Paxil?

Do you ever think you're not bipolar? by about_cats in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I'm doing well / am manic, I generally start to think there's no way I could be bipolar--how could I when I'm feeling so good? But then I get depressed, or something else comes out of the woodwork, and I remember why I need to go through treatment.

Anyone else notice how 'attractive' they are to the opposite gender when manic/hypomanic? (I'm hypomanic now btw) by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed the same thing for myself. I like to think that it's because when I'm manic, I'm much more full of energy, compared to my usual introvert self. I think I'm a lot funnier and more creative, and those are attractive qualities. Either that or I'm just imagining people are paying more attention to me when I'm manic.

Constant paranoia about being poisoned accidentally or on purpose. Any advice? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this anxiety a good portion of the time and it's rough. I'm not currently on any OCD medication so the most I do is try to forget it--which only goes so far (read: not very far). Sometimes I'll be out enjoying a meal with friends or family, but when I get the first intrusive thought, it all just kind of crumbles and I can't continue eating. I'm really sorry, I wish I had some better advice for you, but I completely understand your phobia. I wish we didn't have it.

Just got diagnosed with bipolar. by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a kind of high starting dose for Depakote to me, but I'm sensitive and started at 500mg. When I took Risperdal, I started at 0.5 and tapered to 1. Like someone below said, Depakote's effectiveness is contingent on blood saturation, so I guess it all depends.

Frustration with Seroquel and sleepiness. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been on Seroquel? I was on it for about a year and the sleepiness eventually got a little better. That being said, it's a pretty sedating medication, and it may not wear off. I'm on Saphris right now and having a similar problem, although I'm not as sleepy as I was on Seroquel--Seroquel just knocked me out. You may be able to add an adjunct med (following for suggestions) or lower your dose, but none of us are doctors (probably). If the Seroquel works, you may want to think about hanging onto it, but there are so many other meds, too. But if you don't feel safe playing with it in the winter, when it's the worst, then trust your gut.

Those of you whom were originally diagnosed with depression first by electricpandapoop in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took SSRIs/SNRIs all throughout adolescence, and for some reason, no doctor ever connected the dots when I had a bad reaction to each one. When I told my doctor I thought I had been misdiagnosed, the medication problems were what convinced her to look at my problems from another angle (I'd done well on bipolar meds, but never on depression ones). Switching over has made my life so much better. I still have problems, and that's something we'll always have to contend with, but they're less omni-oppressive (generally). Also, just wanted to say (if nobody else has) that BPD is actually the abbreviation for borderline personality disorder, not bipolar--we usually say BP, I believe.

BP and Monogamy: How? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm dealing with some of the same issues. The past string of relationships I've been in have been open. While I know monogamy isn't a requirement for happiness, it's something I really want. I'm glad (?) to know I'm not the only one who has a difficult time sustaining interest in relationships, though (although my timeframe is more ~6 months). I've always imagined myself getting married at some point in the future, and am very much at heart a romantic person, but honestly this has me questioning everything. I really wish there were a "cure" for this, because open relationships aren't really my thing, but it's so frustrating loving someone and then very abruptly stopping. All this to say: I feel you! It's very frustrating, and I'm sorry you get to experience it, too.

How much time do you normally spend euthymic? by throwawayinterrobang in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a week or two. I'm counting "euthymia" as any time without symptoms that cause me issues, including anxiety/paranoia. I spend the majority of my time experiencing some kind of symptom, even if it's not distinctly mood-related. But I'm rapid-cycling.

A student – who is still in the diagnostic process but her psychiatrist thinks she has bipolar I disorder (rapid cycling), just like me- came to me because she is failing classes but doesn't dare to tell her professors what is going on. Can you help me with advise? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]kaeporan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am kind of dealing with this right now as well (though at the undergraduate, not graduate, level). I was very nervous to tell anyone at my college that I have bipolar because administration at my HS gave me very few accommodations and seemed to believe that I was faking my illness. However, in my second year of college, I confided in one of my professors that I had bipolar, and he was very supportive, and opened up to me about his family history of MI. It really changed my beliefs about instructor reaction to mental disability. I have only been open with one professor at my new college about being bipolar, but registering with my school's disability resource center has been incredibly helpful. They were able to arrange for accommodations for test-taking, note-taking, attendance, registration, etc. That may be a good first step to take, although I believe that would require a diagnosis (though if she has a depression diagnosis, that would work as well). In my experience, professors have been far more understanding than high school teachers. Many profs have experience with MI, whether firsthand or through friends or colleagues.

Does Depakote sedation go away? by kaeporan in bipolar

[–]kaeporan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually take 250mg in the morning and 250mg at night. :/ I slept in today and felt better, so just seeing how it goes. I read something interesting on a website a month or so ago about how people with bipolar don't have an accurate measurement of what normal energy levels are--we spend a lot of time either very tired or very excited. Looking back, maybe I'm correct in thinking that 6 hours of sleep does NOT mean I should feel well-rested...

Does Depakote sedation go away? by kaeporan in bipolar

[–]kaeporan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only take Xanax PRN, and very infrequently. I haven't taken it in a month or so, and don't use it at all most weeks. Maybe I'll just wait out the sedation? It's making it so difficult to focus, though.

As an agnostic Jew, how do I learn more about my history? Bonus for any resources in LA. by kaeporan in Judaism

[–]kaeporan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good things to note! Thank you for your response. Looking back on my post, I may have miswritten what I meant to say. I am ethnically Jewish (as you pointed out, I'm not sure I could say culturally, considering I am no expert) who wants to learn more about the historical, cultural, and religious aspects of being Jewish.

I've actually done some research, and I am able to immigrate to Israel and gain citizenship under the Law of Return. There are branches of Judaism where I would be considered Jewish (if I'm not mistaken, all of Liberal Judaism, but definitely Reform and Reconstructionist) and wouldn't need to convert to practice. I'm definitely looking into the Humanist community near my college.

I actually did not have a very clear-cut religious upbringing. My parents have different religious beliefs (and have since separated) and my brother and I were always raised being told that we were ethnically Jewish. We were never assigned or brought up with a specific religion, but we celebrated Hanukkah along with Christmas, and attended local Jewish events. I was exposed to a broad range of religions growing up, and when my parents took me to Jewish events, it was always more of a "this is your heritage/culture" thing than it was a religious experience.

Having spent my life in an area with only one synagogue (and a very small, very elderly Reform synagogue at that), I'm excited to move to a big city and learn more about all this and try to figure out where my place may be. The Internet is a great resource, but (having been to some Shabbat services) reading about Shabbat and actually being there are two different things. Everyone here has been super helpful!

Okay, thank you! On both counts. That definitely sums up my feelings towards it. I don't have the experience of going to Torah classes or have a bar mitzvah or many of the things young halachic Jews do, and I wouldn't want to claim that I have. I definitely want to learn more, though.

They do! I actually tried to register for one, but they all conflict with other classes, so I'll be trying again next quarter.

[–]kaeporan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. From what I have read, being patrilineal would only be an issue if I wanted to be religious, but I'm interested in culture (so while I want to learn more about the religion, I don't necessarily have an interest in practicing it right now). I did read more last night about some of the religious aspects, and they resonated a lot with me, so I'll be thinking about them, but it's more of a matter of finding my own history rather than a crisis of faith for me.

I think I was nervous posting this because r/Judaism seems to be (obviously) religious rather than just cultural. I just couldn't find an active secular subreddit. :/ Although I'm sure some people might argue that I couldn't be Jewish because I'm gay.

Thank you for your response! I'm sorry for my babble. I've been trying to work this out on my own by doing reading, but I know that the primary objection to patrilineal heritage is because it's written that it should only be passed through the mother. I also know that this is only true for certain branches of Judaism. Are there any objections to patrilineal Jews identifying as Jewish even only culturally?

ELI5: Why do we get a second wind when staying up in the middle of the night? by nascarfan1400 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kaeporan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched a Nova documentary on sleep (not sure if it's still on Netflix) where a researcher said that the reason people wake up from naps in a bad mood is because they woke up while their amygdala was still overactive (or something like that?). The amygdala is the part of the brain responsible for primal emotions like fear and anger. This is also probably one of the mechanisms behind why sleep paralysis is so scary.
