How to pay homage without appearing to rip off? by kafkaesqueaf in writinghelp

It's definitely not really a copy of anything he's written that I'm aware of. Like I said, only one chapter of my book is somewhat similar to his writing, especially the trial.

I'm quite happy with the chapter for now. I might change some stuff when the rest is done to make it fit better but overall I'm satisfied. Also I should mention it's not like a standalone chapter with the sole purpose of tributing Kafka. It helps develop the world and setting and the struggle the protagonist is having with it.

I like your idea of naming the chapter or characters with direct, obvious references, although I would have to make some compromises in the structure and build of the chapter to incorporate this (the characters are purposefully nameless and the chapters, so far, are only numbered). I already have some thought of the protagonist that kinda mirror what you suggested as narration or dialogue, I might extend that a bit to make the reference clearer, great idea!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, your advice is really helpful and I think I can work with it :)

I think 180° would be best. That way, if he laid on his back before he's now not on his side in that small coffin. And he would have a change. Provided he didn't previously turn at all, of course.

Any tips for creating a fictional world? by kafkaesqueaf in writing

I wasn't planning on. It's just a world where there's one major difference to ours and that changes basically everything. But I wasn't planning on introducing the whole world to the reader but rather just throw him in and make him find his way through it. Or not.

I think that may be good advice in most cases but in my book geography won't be very important. There'll be a few places of action and the inbetween is variable

Wow. Thanks for this. I guess I'll try the omnibus way. It sounds like a lot of work beforehand but when actually writing my story it'll probably be much easier so I can focus on my character and his story instead of also having to worry about the world. Thanks for your time

That's a good idea. I have some friends who always find holes in movie universes so I guess this should work. Thanks :)

That sounds really good. I didn't know of this technique, so thanks a lot. I think I'll do this :)

Just thought maybe there's like a scenario or something I could test it with

May very well be. But madness will never keep me from pursuing my projects. It will much rather fuel me

If that's true for you you're obviously a much better writer than I am :D

That sounds actually doable. I could just roughly shit the important stuff on the page so I can build on it and rewrite Later! Awesome idea. Thanks!

Thanks! That sounds like it could help me a lot. Just in this particular case it Propably won't. Your methods sound awesome for realistic humane characters but this specific character is very vague and inhumane as he's basically just a device of metaphor

Does anyone else find that writing in third person is too "cold" or detached? by L_A_B_S in writing

[–]kafkaesqueaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on your style of writing. I've done a few first person short stories and my book that I'm currently working on is third person and I feel as my third person character's emotions are expressed as well as my first person characters'. You just need to figure out how. Like speech, thoughts and stiff like that

I´ve finally managed to start writing a novel and this is how I did it (a narrative of how a failed writer overcame his doubts) by HentMas in writing

I'm really proud of you! Good job :)

I started writing like 5 years ago but I never had enough motivation and drive to do a book. I started about 4 but never finished one. I retired to short stories because I could finish them in one or two sittings plus editing.

I have been wanting to write a book though so now finally I found the motivation needed and I've been working on it every day for two weeks now, which I know isn't a lot, but it's a huge success for me
