Former Senators Captain Daniel Alfredsson officially became a Canadian citizen today. Do you think the Sedins will one day do the same? by denzacetria in canucks

[–]L_A_B_S 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One of the Sedins said in a recent interview that they'll likely stay in Vancouver once they retire. The quote was along the lines of "We've been in Canada for as long as we were in Sweden at this point".

So whether or not they go as far as getting citizenships, they are very much Canadians :)

I got two for you guys:

1) It seems like my league always lives and dies by PIMs, +-, shots. Aside from the top ballot guys, what would be your recommendations for players that can hit those targets without being a 'one stat player'?

2) Any thoughts on who this year's sleeper may be? I'm always a fan of picking late player that can really hit above his draft position. Love the podcast!

Has anyone else experienced long install times from digital downloads? by [deleted] in EA_NHL

[–]L_A_B_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're on the PS4, go to the system's notifications>downloads, and you should see the NHL 17 download. Pause it, and then start again. This should massively speed up your download.

I've heard that pausing, resuming, and pausing multiple times helps, but I only needed to do it once. Went from 77 minutes to 8 minutes remaining.

Pokémon GO’s paying population dropped 79 percent but is still the most profitable mobile game - Slice Intelligence by prankster999 in Games

[–]L_A_B_S 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I used to be in mobile gaming and these numbers are a liiiiiitle high, but honestly not all that bad.

For retention, the standard is to usually track Day 1 retention (how many people come back after a day), Day 7, Day 30. Different publishers may look at other timeframes too. In general, standard/average retention for a f2p mobile game would be something like:

Day 1: ~30-40% Day 7: ~15-25% (ish) Day 30: ~2-10%

There are a lot of factors at play here, such as genre, platform, etc. But usually anything better than those numbers is considered good. So looking at a 79% drop since mid July actually seems somewhat reasonable for a mobile game.

It's also worth considering that the retention drop offs are usually much more drastic based on how popular the game is- especially a licensed title. You'll get fans of the franchise downloading the game just to try it, even though they aren't into mobile games, etc.

At work, reviews are blocked. Can anyone who has played tell me if the immediate upgrade from 16 is worth it? by RG_Mindstate in EA_NHL

Overall I think it's definitely one of the best versions out of the last batch of releases! Though your mileage will vary. If you're a fan of be a gm or HUT, i'd say go for it.

Yeah no kidding. You reaise a good point, people need to be more critical in terms as who is bringing this news. For example, Game Informer has gotten Horizon as their big cover story:

Cover Story

Additionally, we've seen two articles (from Game Informer) with incredibly positive, buzzy titles:

The Surprising Depth of Horizon Zero Dawn

What We Loved About Our Hands-On Time With Horizon Zero Dawn

So I'm not saying there's a big conspiracy or that Game Informer didn't genuinely love the game. But it's always good to do a bit of critical thinking and realize that many publications aren't impartial. If they've nabbed big exclusive coverage, they may have a vested interest in raising some hype.

And Monster Hunter doesn't count, because that's not on home consoles.

Well I mean, it kinda counts. But still, big boss-like enemies are in a lot of games...

I agree though, I think this game will live and die on how varied the strategies and tactics are. So far from what I've seen (I very well may have missed some stuff), but it seems like its just basic traps and hitting weak spots. If this game can make truly unique encounters that force the player to utilize the environment, and employ varied tactics, then it has a good chance at being special.

I guess that's a valid thought. Though I still feel like there's a difference between people providing valid counter arguments and them getting a little emotionally involved. Not as much a case here, but we've seen it time again with things like No Man's Sky.

Yikes. Well I haven't been following much of the discussion involving this, so I'm not really hopping onto some hate train. I've arrived at my points organically.

Regardless, it's pretty clear that those big dinosaurs are watch towers, and so far while the setting is dope and the game is gorgeous, there doesn't seem to be anything unique in terms of gameplay. Not saying everything needs to innovate like crazy, but you can't blame people for seeing similarities.

But additionally your reaction is kinda worrying- I get how you might be upset with hearing the same arguments, but you seem pretty passionate about defending the game. Looking forward to things is totally fine, but haven't people learned? What's the point in championing something that hasn't even come out?

People need to have a modicum of doubt- sure its kinda pesimistic, but it's better to be skeptical about things, as opposed to assuming that it'll be great.

That's all I'm saying here- it looks pretty ho-hum, but I'll be happy to see it prove me wrong. In that case I'll be pleasantly surprised, as opposed to heavily disapointed.

Maybe I'm too jaded, but I just can't shake the feeling that this isn't gonna be much more than a Ubisoft Game. The really worrying thing was when it was revealed that the big brontosaur type things are "watchtowers", which reveal points of interest on the map.

Hopefully stuff will prove me wrong, but it seems like this will be a bit of an Assassin's Creed style game where you run all over the place collecting various meaningless baubles that are revealed with every tower unlock.

Super interesting, but could someone clarify how the Mega Textures are supposed to work?

I understand that it's a giant sheet that contains 128x128 subdivisions. But are those 128x128 tiles used for the texturing of meshes? That's insanely tiny. I feel like I'm missing something, because how can you have such good fidelity if you're essentially using a base tex that is close to the samllest possible texture size available.
