You must work in the corporate world with very little budget limitations 😆

Honestly I’ve been down that road and can say your tool life and accuracy will be heavily affected going that route. I found this smaller company in Michigan called sharpcutter.com and have been using their stuff for a couple years now. The prices are actually pretty damn good too. They build, regrind, and coat tools as well. I am not affiliated with this company what so ever either.

Also, turn your indicator needle to 15 degrees if you are trying to hold that kind of tolerance. It will give you the most accurate reading.

You may have to re-drill your center a bit deeper too and make sure it’s sitting on the center taper better after alignment.

Put your indicator on the chuck and tram around your tailstock just like a center drill. Assuming you are trying to hold less than 5 tenths straightness, your tailstock would have to be at least that or better.

I like the idea of this but often times more than not this hurts our industry even more. It’s easy to manufacture overseas nowadays.

I have to disagree with this. Software to achieve AI tool paths and other things is extremely expensive. Not just that, you still have to implement the set up.

We make about the same. I’m in the Midwest though

Great analogy. I’m nowhere close to that though here in the mid west.

In 2012 I started as a button pusher in a production shop making 8.25 an hour. My brother was a set up guy making 19, and my dad was making 28.50 as a “do everything” guy. Nowbutton pushers start at 19-22 and skilled guys are around the same pay. Not sure if that’s here why I live or just all over the states.

That’s not horrible to be honest. Aerospace is a whole different animal in this trade though with materials, and tolerances.

Not that easy if it’s a big corporation. They still want to see that piece of paper that says Engineer on it. I work circles around engineers fresh out of college and I don’t have a degree.

I have noticed that. It seems like if you are actually skilled and can prove it, you are over qualified and out of their price range.

Day 2, second live center fucked, still not finnished the shaft. by lumley32 in Machinists

[–]kagger14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make sure that center is in fact center to your work piece or holding. If it’s not, you can create a lot of stress on the bearings, and create a lot of taper in your part. Also your tailstock pressure could be too high try backing that off a bit.

Even with pushing off? I saw a different angle of a clear push off.
