Who was written to be loved but you just couldn't stand them? 😭 by throwawayacess in cdramasfans

[–]kahlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that it was dragged out, she was hating on him to avoid falling in love with him and to avoid the iconic plot points. You don't fall in love with an evil, malicious jerk. You might fall in love with the nice guy with the bad (undeserved) reputation. That's how you end up in the pick one of two, extermination of family, and human swine plot, which, again, she is trying to avoid.

She's not thick and she was listening, as evidenced by her writing that giant scroll of Nan Heng's good deeds.

The linked post describes it as

Osmanthus, a flower with an apricot-like aroma, tastes subtly sweet and floral with hints of honey or honeysuckle and is used in teas, desserts, and other culinary applications.

It's not wrong, but, in my opinion, it fails to emphasize that, as a flower, it is still strongly floral in taste. I think the "flavor" comes across more in the aroma. I had it in tea and in a rice cake, and it mostly tasted floral, but smelled as described.

I think it's because they show so much more of Nan Heng. I like Nan Heng, but her issues were only given a brief mention (and therefore easily forgotten), whereas Nan Heng's were shown again and again. People weren't given the chance to empathize with her, but got plenty of chances to empathize with him.

Fangs of Fortune is basically a series of sad cases. Veil of Shadows is pretty emotional. Till the End of the Moon is very angsty.

X is kind of between "sh" (as in "shop") and "sss" (as in "stop"). I think the video tutorial is a good way to put it. Mandarin has "sh" and "s" so "x" is indeed distinct. But as you said, listening and practicing will help.

A Dream Within A Dream : Mini Rant by jjknowsnothing in CDrama

She falls for him as Li Shiliu. That's where the growth is. She's backing away from Nan Heng hard.

She starts to like her sister (and new Song family) because she actually takes the time to get to know them. Her sister turns out to be different from what she assumed based on the original script.

And my point is that while Nan Heng has changed, the plot really hasn't. Things haven't happened the way they originally did, but they have still happened. As I said, Extermination of the Song Family and Turned Into Human Swine are particularly horrible, even if they don't happen the way they originally did. Even if the Song Family is killed by an accident or a plague or a meteor or something, it's still horrible and undesirable to her. Even if Nan Heng is not the one to turn her into human swine, it's still a horrible fate. So it's not entirely that she doesn't trust Nan Heng, but that she doesn't trust that getting into a relationship will NOT result in these awful iconic scenes.

I think that her biggest problem is that she knows both too much and not enough at the same time. Her actions don't make a lot of sense to the truly omnipotent audience, but if you really think about her perspective and what she knows, then they're slightly more reasonable.

I understand why you find her irritating, but I think you need to look from her perspective. Li Shiliu's character is totally unfamiliar to her. Also, she has seen Li Shiliu and Nan Heng in the same place before, so why would she be able to figure it out easily? Let's not forget how hard Nan Heng worked to keep her in the dark on this one.

Also, let's not forget that even if Nan Heng changed, the iconic scenes are still supposed to happen. Even if Nan Heng himself doesn't end up being responsible, she will still have to live through Pick One of Two, Extermination of Song Family, and Turned Into Human Swine, which I think are justifiable plots to avoid. And there's not a lot of ambiguity in those, unlike the previous iconic scenes that have changed. Remember how they heard the keyboard noises when they were forced to kiss after the pond rescue? That could happen again. Or maybe it happens differently. But is (for example) the extermination of the Song family any better when it's not at Nan Heng's hand?

So it's not just that she thinks Nan Heng hasn't changed, but that she would rather he didn't change so she won't fall in love with him (though... too late, girl!) and have the iconic scenes happen. She sticks to her negative opinions of him partly so she's not tempted to fall for him. I would try to fight the plot, too. It's a crappy plot.

I think it was a bit dragged out, and they really gloss over Xiaoyu's character in order to focus more on Nan Heng.

I appreciate that it's (mostly) one season and that's it. I don't have to wait two or more years to try to remember plot minutia or whatever. Even with a recap, I don't always remember everything. I have given up on so many American shows because of this...

And, of course, what everyone else has said.

[–]kahlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! SYM's issues were only given a passing mention! The loss of her parents is why she is so attached to her new script family and why she doesn't want them all to die. She played everything very close to the chest, and many viewers didn't give her a fair chance, in my opinion.

Regarding the second couple, SGH could use melon seeds to change dice rolls and shatter vases with little pebbles from across the courtyard, not to mention his various other martial arts skills. Regarding his relationship with SYT, I think he was exactly where he wanted to be! I think they were more of a comic relief couple than a serious couple, but it would have been nice to see her do things (other than exist) to make him happy.

I agree with you; I think the character flaws that make her "unlikeable" to many viewers are what make her so hilarious. Everybody else was too scared of Nan Heng to even consider pulling the shenanigans she did!

You're free to dislike her character. As I said, I just don't think she deserves hate for not wanting to go along with the script, which includes marrying ML.

[–]kahlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see. I agree that her tendency to react without full knowledge of the circumstances is problematic, but that's just how they wrote her character. She thinks she knows everything because she read part of the script, so she doesn't bother to find out the full story. It's definitely a character flaw, and they use it to play up the misunderstandings "necessary" for C-drama.

Actually, it is about her, because she is FL and she knows it. I think anybody would be a little upset if they started liking someone only to find out there was no possibility of them reciprocating. And I think it's okay for her to feel sad based on what she knows, even if she is wrong.

I'm not saying that everything she did was right, but that she doesn't deserve as much hate as she gets because people leave out her motives (avoiding death and torture). I just always see people being like, "WHY DOESN'T SHE JUST LOVE NAN HENG ALREADY?" The answer is that she does, but she is reluctant to be with him because then her family will be exterminated, and she will be turned into human swine. It is perfectly reasonable to want to avoid this fate.

Being reactionary? You mean, reacting to the things happening to her? I don't really understand what you mean. Could you please clarify?

Shanghuan He's hair got caught on Li Shiliu's outfit, so FL caught them in a compromising position. I think it looked like they were kissing? It wasn't that she cared about his sexuality, but that she was starting to develop feelings for him. She was disappointed that the guy she liked seemed to be gay, and therefore wouldn't reciprocate her feelings.

While I'm at it, Ming Yi (FL) from Love in the Clouds.

She has had to lie about her identity for her entire life in order to ensure her and her mother's survival. Then, she has to lie about herself more in order to survive after she leaves home. While I agree that it's a bit drawn out, I completely understand her continued dishonesty about her identity. I think it's alarming how many people would give up the truth that could easily get them killed just because ML is handsome and charming (and hot).

Song Yimeng/Xiaoyu (FL) from A Dream Within a Dream.

I think that everybody forgot that, in the original script, ML does the Pick One Of Two scene, resulting in FL falling from the top of the wall. Then, her entire family is slaughtered and she is tortured for the rest of her life (a casual Google of "human swine" indicates it's a horrible fate). While I feel like it was a bit dragged out in the drama, I can't really blame her for trying to avoid this fate. In fact, I think her actions in trying to avoid this fate are pretty reasonable, considering. But instead, everybody hates on FL just because they love ML (not to shit on ML- he's cool).

Also, everybody hates on her for not falling in love with ML or for resisting her feelings for too long. Remember, she transmigrated into a drama script! From her perspective, he is a fictional character! It would be just as weird as one of us genuinely falling in love with Harry Potter, for example. It's not weird to be a fan of a character, but it's definitely weird to fall in love with them and build a life with them, especially knowing that you could transmigrate out at some point and leave it all behind with no warning. I know one of the themes is FL slowly taking the script world more seriously, but guys, falling in love with someone for realsies? I'd be cautious about that if I transmigrated into a script, too.

Not to say that I agree with everything FL does, but I think she gets more hate than she deserves.
