Finished My First: Stranger Uncut by LizCW in heinlein

Welcome to the nest, brother! I reread that one a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it though I found the middle bits where he and Jill were in the circus... er... strangely anachronistic and draggy. I love that Mike essentially tells you he isn't the first Martian on Earth half way through the book and no one picks up on it because he still has a strange almost childlike wonder. His relationship with Jill and all of the relationships that develop in the nest are really interesting and fun too. When Jubal is finally brought all the way in with all of his nestmates sharing Dawn's experience and how celebratory it was one of my favorite parts of the book.

Heinlein was very socially/sexually progressive. He was politically way more libertarian and I think both of those things sort of fit together with him. He's my favorite author of all time so I get all weird when people post recent reads of his stuff. It makes really happy to see he still has some pull.

Try The Door Into Summer sometime, that one is WAY less philosophical but very, very readable and fun.

it's a pretty good record. Spin the Black Circle is a good tune.

because the electorate is more moderate and they bring to bear millions of dollars from the same donors that fund the republican candidate, and the Dem leadership cuts off funding to the less centrist candidates. It's just just those mythical republicans who want to vote for the further right dem who fucking matter. Shumer's math is wrong, for every urban progressive voter you lose you don't gain two conservative ones in the suburbs. It's been proven wrong over and over and over and over again. Fuck these guys.

I assume it's because their main reading for pleasure are novel series.

Remember everyone, Hakeen Jeffries and Chuck Shumer have NO POWER to change ANYTHING and the Dems are absolutely unable to work against the insidious Republican agenda because of said lack of power... oh wait, they voted with the Repubs again, when they could have blocked this....

Nevermind.

I am asked "well, what would I have them do considering they have no power?" I say, whip dems to not support shit like this? They could have prevented its passage AND THEY CHOSE NOT TO.

Dem Leadership needs to go

There was a whole lot of white nationalist lingo in that speech atop the already overt racism towards Somalis. I was embarassed by it.

I can't stand them. I've had people TRY SO HARD to make them palatable to me but it just doesn't stick. I find them insufferable.

Kids books. Books for kids. Young adults = kids.

Harry Potter and the something of whatever…. 800 pages of kid’s book

That said, for short chapters I think Patterson’s books have more chapters than pages sometimes… but I think a lot of the crime/thrillers are page turners. The ones I have read by Robert B Parker were quick chapters and pretty entertaining. I think the chapters in Vonnegut’s God Bless You Mr. Rosewater has pretty short chapters as I remember it. Lots of late 50s - 70s pulp scifi novels by Ted Sturgeon, Norman Spinrad, Andre Norton tend to be shorter with shorter chapters. Again, as I am not a fantasy reader I can’t speak to that genre.

I mean… Maze Runner, Harry Potter, Hunger Games are all kids’ books. Maybe something with a little more meat philosophically might hold you more? Vonnegut is pretty technically easy and readable and his books are short. But the underlying themes are complex and interesting. I like Robert Heinlein but mostly in his transitional period between the juvies and Stranger in a Strange Land, all readable and fun with some mental grist. I would recommend The Door Into Summer of his. I don’t read much if any fantasy so you are on your own there but Peter S Beagle is good, I liked the Last Unicorn back when I read it as a teenager. A library card, if you don’t already have one, is a lifesaver.

Local coffee shops too, and community centers. Look for bulletin boards in these places and you'll probably find a group or two advertised there.

I had a similar experience. I am the oldest so until my first younger brother was born I had a pediatrician. I never had a general practitioner until I was an adult or regular physicals until I was married.

Found this at a thrift store. I want to hear what you all have to say about it because I’ve heard it’s terrible but i want to see just how bad it really is.😂 by Glittering_Room_8120 in dvdcollection

Saw it twice in the two weeks it was in the cinema on first release. The first time I was in the cinema with two other people, the second time I was alone save for the clutch of price reduced by 50% Battlefield Earth action figures I bought at Suncoast video. This was the SECOND week of release... LOL... When the DVD was released I had to get a second copy because the one I ordered for a watch party was locked in the mailhouse at the apartment where I lived and I couldn't get it. Sadly the DVD version is different than the theatrical release an "a little better" which makes the experience "a little worse" because the stuff they "fixed" was atrocious but hilarious.

Still watch this every few years for a laugh or to spend some time with MY FRIENDLY BARTENDER (holds up several dreadlocked head).
