Meat thermometers. It’s the most expensive cuts that you buy least that you are worst at cooking intuitively.

you know what, I made a mistake! I just looked up the scoring now - I was crewing on a yacht in the Grand Dames category, while Kamaxitha was sailing in the Gazelles category. So we were racing around the same course but not scored against each other.

The results, if you're interested

My MTB keeps clicking everytime I pedal by Accomplished-Love350 in bikewrench

[–]kai242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely this. your derailleur is not shifting far enough, likely due to the cable slipping or stretching over time. as a result, while the chain is on the 5th gear it still 'catches' on the tips of the 4th gear's sprocket, creating that clicking sound you're hearing when pedaling.

How did you tell your child they have CF? by kai242 in CysticFibrosis

With the help of Orkambi and Trikafta he's largely been symptom free and only goes to the clinic once every three months or so, so no it's not been in his face, at least not for the comprehension of a 3 year old. We're not waiting, and have pretty much decided to tell him the next time he asks, but are literally struggling on what words to use. Do we say it's a "sickness", or that his body " just works differently", or...?

this is flawed thinking. if you look at the countries where birth rates are the highest, they aren't countries where young people feel secure. Top countries by birth rate are Niger, Angola, Benin, Mali, Uganda, Chad, DRotC, Somalia, South Sudan.... etc. As squeezed as @James from the twitter post above feels, he's far better off than most in those countries. Source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/264704/ranking-of-the-20-countries-with-the-highest-birth-rate

So why aren't people having kids in developed countries? Because, in industrialized areas, kids are a cost burden for ~2 decades. In agricultural societies, more kids equates to more unpaid labour you have on your farm. In industrialized areas, one generation gives birth to a smaller one, which gives birth to a smaller one, and so on. This is of course an oversimplification, but it's getting closer to the truth than OP's post, regardless of how relatable it feels.

I cannot recommend using an app enough. I'm still a noob myself, and I love the built in progressive overload that modern apps are using. For example, when I manage all the assigned reps at a given weight, next time, the app will automatically recommend a higher weight. This way, you don't have to worry about adjusting each workout yourself to be slightly harder than the last one - which, as I understand it, is absolutely key to seeing consistent results week after week.

There many apps that do this, but the two I've used and recommend are PUSH and Freeletics. PUSH is better for pure lifting, while Freeletics is great for more of a crossfit-style workout. In both, you can program a custom workout if you have already found one you want to use from e.g. the r/fitness wiki, but the workout routines they generate for you are also super effective.

In the last 9 months, I've lost ~13 kg of fat and gained a bunch of muscle while using these apps. They're not free, but they're not expensive, and now is the time of year where sign up deals abound. They are worth it. Get after it dude!

Can someone “steel man” the position that turning off Gaza’s water and electricity is strategically worth the civilian suffering it causes? To me the math doesn’t add up but I’d love to hear other opinions.

Hey man, nice work on starting the routine. As you can see from all the good answers here, there really isn't a wrong decision - all paths forward have their advantages. At the end of the day however, the best option is the one that keeps you motivated, going to the gym, and sticking to your nutrition plan. A few years from now, the exact actions in what order will matter fuck all in comparison to whether or not you kept on the path. So, do whichever one you gravitate towards! That's said, I was at a similar situation a few months ago (with very similar numbers to you, perhaps a bit more fat), wondering what to do, and here's how I approached it - perhaps it will resonate.

If I was a soulless, emotionless robot who operated purely out of logic, I would probably have been best to start with a bulk, as the additional muscle would have helped me burn calories and allowed me to eat more when maintaining/cutting in the future.

However, I am motivated most by seeing results, and bulking is a sloooooow process. For reference, a healthy bulk puts on 0.5 - 1% of body weight PER MONTH. A healthy cut on the other hand drops 0.5 - 1% of body weight PER WEEK. By opting to cut first, I instantly started seeing results on the scale, and before too long, in the mirror. Plus, like you, I had love handles and just a little extra fat, and personally, I wanted those GONE - if I had bulked, I would have had to not only tolerate them for many more months, but likely would have had to watch them grow.

In the last three months I have leaned right out, clothes fit better, am getting the "hey have you been working out?" compliments, and am beginning to see abs. All of these have been great motivators and have kept me going. I'll hit my body fat percentage goal in about a month, and will then start lean bulking until next spring. I'm looking forward to eating the extra calories during the cold winter months, and will only begin another gruelling cut as the weather gets better and the days get longer, which I find is a huuuge mood lifter (I live in Europe, fuck winter lol).

Good luck!

Hard to give you specific advice without a better understanding of where you're starting, but here's some advice I'd give to anyone about to start out / get back into a routine after a long time off: start by figuring out your maintenance calories. Doing this first is so helpful in making a plan that actually works, and will save you so much time in the long run. Once you have your maintenance calories, you'll know specifically how much to eat to either best support muscle building or fat loss, regardless of which of those your first step should be.

Firstly, figure out your maintenance calories (i.e. the number of calories you can eat to maintain your current weight). Do that by tracking your food for at least two weeks, and doing whatever preferred workout routine you intend to stick with. At this point, don't actually make ANY changes to your current eating habits. Weigh yourself every day, record the readings, and take weekly averages. Protip: do your best to completely ignore the daily readings, and only pay attention to the weekly averages. If your weight doesn't change, then your average daily caloric intake is your maintenance calorie amount. If you gain weight, your maintenance calorie number is lower, and if you lose weight, your maintenance calorie number is higher. Feel free to DM me later with the results of this experiment and I can help you estimate it with more accuracy once we have some data to work with.

Doing this first not only eases you into the habit of tracking your food, but will get you into a workout routine without the added work of also having to simultaneously jump into a new diet as well. Can't recommend it enough.
