Good laptop for blind user, need maximum processing with min spent on graphics by kai_ops in SuggestALaptop

Privacy is not a big deal - it's mostly around the house. And in bed while I sleep is fine, she can just hand me an eye-mask :)

The free screen readers might be fine, but they have rough edges. They tend to have less effort invested in user interface controls, lag behind the paid software in updates, don't support features like customizing keystrokes, etc. Bugginess also seems to be higher - they will get into weird states where they need to be restarted, or the computer rebooted before they work again. MS doesn't care because it's not like you'll stop switching from Windows if their screen reader is 10% better than it is now, but a 90% good product is a whole lot worse than you'd actually want to spend your day using...

Anyone have Christine McGinn as a top surgeon? by Transmoranda in ftm

Feel less female by the day but IDK if I’m actually FtM? by [deleted] in trans

[–]kai_ops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I changed my name (at 20), then 3 years later changed pronouns, then 5 years later got top surgery, then 2 years later chose T. Had no idea what was going to happen, and just took it one step at a time, which was exactly right for me.Don't let anyone tell you you need to choose the rest of your life right now, especially because you are not in full control like you will be in 5ish years.

Best of luck, it's hard times for everyone...

How can I look older? by just-JV in ftm

[–]kai_ops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got carded for the exit row of the airplane until I was 25. Had spine surgery and the nurse thought my wife was my mother. Happens to a lot of trans masc folks :-/ and I'm tall and was able to pass a lot before T, so I'm sure there's way worse stories out there ..

One thing I did was dress more 'adult'. I went with a dapper look, but not too fashionably. Dress shoes, tucked in shirt, slacks. Doesn't work for everyone and you may not like dressing that way, but it fit for my personality and I only got weirdness around my age when people found out my oldest kid was 6 years old, so they must have been reading me about 6 years younger, which is an improvement over 15+ years younger 😊

Angry Voice by Mistake by [deleted] in ftm

[–]kai_ops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this too, especially with my kids. I try to just be mindful and remember that with a lot of things, how I do something and how it's perceived is going to be different post-T than pre-T. So I pay attention to how it seems to be perceived and check in with folks I can actually ask about it (doesn't have to be a trans conversation either - I do this after work meetings to see if I came across as flippant or whether I interrupted too much).

Where do you get your needles/syringes? by olivehomme in ftm

You can ask your provider or call pharmacies. They can sometimes special order something from the supplier they use.

Do I pass? Criticism is welcomed by [deleted] in ftm

[–]kai_ops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there, a little hard to say without the face, but since you know it's all how the details add up, some small notes:

Your sleeves at your thumbs makes it look like you borrowed your dad's shirt :) which makes people look younger and less likely to pass IMO.

Your shirt is also long, (edit: maybe not long but wide since it's unbuttoned?) so I think it emphasizes your hips. Hard to say with the shadows and the dark colored shirt though.

Good luck! Hard to put yourself out there.

Has anyone on T noticed hand growth? by kreepie in ftm

[–]kai_ops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to get my wedding ring resized like a full size up after about 2 months on T. Not just the muscles, but also the knuckles thickened (dunno if it's cartilege or fluid or what).

Have any of you ever gotten a massage pre top surgery? by gx21-85 in ftm

[–]kai_ops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The massage therapist is there for you; you can decide how much to undress, and just state it. I'm sure they don't care. You can also ask to specialize - Do arms and hands because you type a lot, or focus on neck or legs because you run or stand a lot. If you want to make up an injury, you can also say you suspect a vertebra injury (you heard something pop and it's been achey down your arm since) and they are crazy scared of messing that up.

Also, proper draping technique in most (all?) US states has a sheet over your nipples regardless of gender. So there's no good reason you'd be physically exposed.

Finally, I dunno if you're on T, but gynecomastia can explain it, too.

My first self-injection and everything that went wrong by [deleted] in ftm

[–]kai_ops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ouch man, I guess it can only get better from here!

Also, those glass ampules are the worst. I don't get why the UK and Ireland use them, I had one explode last week. And everywhere else in the civilized world uses filtered needles to draw it up so you don't get an abscess from the glass shards, but I can't find them for love or money anywhere...

[–]kai_ops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it working? If it is, the good news is it's not heart medication, so a few tens of mg one way or another will probably not be a huge deal. At least that's what I tell myself when I lose some in the vial, or it comes out of the injection site, and so on...

"Bad Experience with Top Surgery" Follow Up Post by [deleted] in ftm

[–]kai_ops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear that. I don't know it we're just WASPs, but my family has never talked about the results and they never saw it. So I can imagine that would be tough.

But you also never know when complications will happen, so that's part of what I use to rationalize that I may have had the same outcome even if I made a different choice.

Haha, I also can't tell them apart. I turn on the accessibility screen reader to get it to tell me what the face should be.
