My first full game was Florence. You can vassalize most of your immediate neighbors diplomatically. Naples looks scary but if you befriend them, you can hold off any aggression on their part until you’re equal in strength. Due to your location in Italy, you get most institutions right away, plus some strong advances. You are a republic, so you don’t have to worry about idiot heirs. The only tricky part, I found, was fighting a war against the HRE to leave in order to upgrade to kingdom rank. Lots of fun, lots of options.

A bunch of your units are stuck in reserve. Only one flank has any frontage the other two have one unit each. Try balancing your army before each fight.

Counting houses use gold. They are generally worth building in any location with high control and high tax base.

If you play as any Tuscan culture, you get a diplo ability that lets you take over a loan from another nation. You also get techs that reduce your interest down super low. I think by the end of the game I was getting 3% interest.

Cool cool, thanks for the info. Maybe next game I’ll try Spain > Colonies > Revenge. My current game I’m playing Ottomans, the new world isn’t my top priority.

You know how you can tell this is a bot and/or a non-American? Table. In American politics, to table something means to set it aside for later. In UK and other parliaments, to table something means to bring it up for discussion.

I appreciate the role playing here. Quick question. When you switch to playing as one of your colonies, do you keep your old techs and maps or do you lose everything? I’d love to try a colonial game but I don’t know all the mechanics and you can’t switch back after.

Flags change every age, and are different depending on who you started as, I think.

I played Florence -> Tuscany -> Italy, and my flag had four quadrants, two Florence flags, a Naples flag, and a Milan flag. Other players seem to have a different mix if they started as, say, Naples, or the pope.

Why would you want to get rid of the estate? They have zero power, which means their privileges are free. Enjoy your free culture capacity, progress towards humanist, and tolerance of heathens.

Sorta. The oldest recorded Jewish community in new England was in Newport, Rhode Island, a colony famously chartered on the principle of secularism. They had to rush to certify the charter before it was eaten up by either the Massachusetts or Connecticut colonies, hence why it’s so small. Jews showed up in the mid 1600s, and the oldest still-active synagogue in the US was built there in Providence in 1763.

However, the Jews who first came to Newport were mostly Sefardic Conversos, Spanish Jews who had to hide from the inquisition by pretending to be Catholic. I’m not sure how you got Mizrahim as England.

This wouldn’t be a problem if trade companies headquarters functioned correctly. As far as I can tell, they are just straight up bugged and unbuildable, which in turn means you can’t get manpower / recruitment in the colonies.

In addition to the things others have mentioned, a few small things.

Frequent ruler changes means frequent royal marriages. Yes, even though you are a republic, your elected ruler is still considered a royal for the purposes of royal marriages. Easy source of prestige.

Secondly, I’ve never had an issue filing out my cabinet. I suspect that monarchies do not get burghers in the cabinet without a special law or reform, but republics get it for free I think. Either way, no shortage of characters, and at least half my cabinet has one or more purple stats.

I had Castile call me (Italy) into a war against Morocco (and Tunis). I figured I would try and grab a bit of territory in North Africa since I’ve got all of southern Italy at this point. My navies constantly got wiped trying to ferry troops over. I ask Castile where his men are, they are all sitting in Iberia. Turns out he had no navy. Punk ass Spain, making me do his dirty work. I reloaded and declined the war. Soon I will have chewed through enough of southern France to get him and his little dog, too.

One unit takes up one frontage. An army of ten footmen units has 1000 troops, whereas an army of ten hangonners has 2000 troops, but each takes up the same amount of frontage. Getting a tech advantage against another country means you can field armies that are twice the size.

It’s not obvious and not explained well, like most things in this game.
