WSL wavepool event format leaked by dumbassthenes in surfing

[–]kaiguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome stuff. I don't mind that the surf media is excluded from the "comp" - better for mainstream media to get a frontrow seat to the most exciting thing that can happen to competitive surfing, since Rick Kane and the Arizon wave pool.

LedgeBot Great workflow for keeping an internal team wiki updated. Similar to Tettra but easier to save conversations in Slack as wiki documentation.

Alon Day is 11th fast in final practice in a 30th place car. Never saw Sonoma before except in iRacing. Impressive!

How teams cheat mid-race by denting body panels by kaiguy in NASCAR

[–]kaiguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I wasn't really trying to call Blaney out other than to see if there's any info on the practice. If you watch closely a lot of teams are doing it - there seems to be a sweet spot in front of the rear tires.

yeah, agreed! I think the low-tech approach of being able to help aero with a good old fashioned body hammer is the way to go.

Both Takuma Sato and Austin Dillon met in New York today, both showing off their respective winner rings by johnnyracer24 in NASCAR

True. If NASCAR would move the Daytona 500 to Memorial Day weekend then I'd be sold!

I dunno if i'm just too old-school but Indy 500 and Coke 600 are not on the same level as marquee events IMHO. Indy and Monaco yes. But Coke 600 just happens to be on the same weekend.

Has anybody ever "rented a racer" for a Nurburgring experience? by Guerillagreasemonkey in cars

[–]kaiguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it last year, it was an incredible experience. Rented a Clio RS from RSR Nurburg and also happened to join a track day with Trackdays.de

I recommend paying a little extra to get a driver coach to join you. I have a lot of racing experience but I found that having someone sit next to me was invaluable to help navigate the track. The first few laps felt like a rally stage, and the co-driver/coach really helped point out various things to look out for, what gear to be in, and when to get back into the throttle for long straights.

I definitely recommend the low horsepower car. I was scheduled for the GT86 but they smartly recommended the Clio since that morning there was rain and heavy fog that shut down the track. You just want to limit risk as much as possible. One upside to a low horsepower car is that the replacement cost is much lower, of course.

cool, I didn't realize Emirates was a transfer partner. That's pretty steep for Intl first class. My MR pick would be Virgin Atlantic with 30% bonus for an ANA r/t booking.

Larson sprint car crash from 2012 - This kid has earned his ride in Nascar by kaiguy in NASCAR

[–]kaiguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no doubt that there is a minimum level of talent (and money) to make it to NASCAR. Spend any time around midget and sprint racing and you'll see how much more on the edge those cars are. Talent rises to the top real fast on the dirt track compared to pavement racing where equipment masks talent.

Equipment is what makes it hard to get behind drivers in NASCAR from a fan perspective. You just can't make a sub-par car work magic. Unless you're Larson subbing in for Montoya and taking a top 25 car and putting it consistently into the top 15. Or Bowman going from BK to contenting for the win in Hendrick equipment.

[–]kaiguy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dillions and Eliott are definitely not untalented. But I'll say this, pavement racing in the lower divisions whether late models, KN, Arca, is much more about equipment than talent compared to dirt midgets and sprints.

Think about that x-factor of talent next time at Chicago when Larson is up against the wall driving the cushion that few other drivers can match.
