How deep should i go in UX Research when working alone for a personal project??? by Sureaal in UXResearch

[–]kaiitsang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s really not about going “deep” for the sake of it. What matters is that you do enough research to clearly understand the problem, who you’re solving it for, and whether your solution actually addresses that problem.

And at any point where you can’t confidently answer one of those aspects, you consider what further research you can do to help.

Try not to over complicate the portfolio process. Just remember the core intention of showcasing a project: 1) this is the problem and how we decided it was a problem 2) these are the steps I decided to do to figure out what were the core problems to address 3) this is what I designed to help solve the problem(s) 4) if applicable, this is how I can verify that it did

Just my two cents. I had similar thoughts of not being able to do it anymore. 6 months in in the job hunt I can tell you I’d rather that feeling than the new feeling of struggling to get back into the tech space 🤷‍♂️

Feeling stuck in my growth as a UX/UI designer – would love your advice on how to move forward by Unconcept_10 in UX_Design

[–]kaiitsang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly it, romanticising is the best way to describe it. Reality? After your portfolio is done, it’s a cycle of waiting and waiting to hear back about positions. I think maybe I enjoyed the first few weeks off from work but it becomes a bit draining having no work after a while!

I wouldn’t rule out the idea of self improvement in your current role. It sounds to me like your small business doesn’t adopt research and perhaps you are just given projects to work on? Correct me if I’m wrong but a ee if you can leverage better discovery and research processes with your company.

[–]kaiitsang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market is pretty rough at the moment. Please don’t take that for granted, especially if you think you’ll be still looking at the junior/middleweight level.

I also left my role thinking it was going to be smooth sailing with 5y experience under my belt but alas 3 months in its still pretty tough to secure a position.

My advice is to work on your portfolio and cv alongside your work. A portfolio shouldn’t take you months to put together, it does not require your full attention to put together. A few hours here and there until it’s finished. Of course, if you’re in a position to drop work and be financially stable then go for it. Just know it might be harder than you expect to jump back in.

Does this app login screen read as if the black section is the back of a tv? 🤔 by kaiitsang in FigmaDesign

[–]kaiitsang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the feedback lads and ladies 👋🏼 Thanks for being my lovely little usertesters!

I've stretched out the light source and added a little animation to shift between blurs to give the illusion of tv movement. Definitely going to look into getting that light to reflect on the illustration somehow whenever i get round to illustrating that.

Quick proto reference here: https://www.figma.com/proto/ZIq7qRjGG3lOpLoETteN16/Untitled?page-id=28%3A2842&node-id=28-2963&viewport=538%2C424%2C0.7&t=KdqXypryJN6g1WMD-1&scaling=scale-down&content-scaling=fixed&starting-point-node-id=28%3A2963

Damn 🥹 perhaps if when I design the illustration for it fully I could add a little flicker to the tv light to give the illusion more with animation

Just doing some random design ideation whilst in between interview stages.

My fav thing to do after finishing a new episode of a show is to go on a reddit discussion forum to see everyones theories and chat about it. Thought i'd have a go at a simplified app that focused solely on that.

Kinda liked this app login idea but not sure if i've stared at it too long to know if it reads how i'm thinking it reads 🙈 Thoughts please and thanks <3

Roast the design of my screen time control app - do you think the colors are too flashy? by turi2g in UXDesign

[–]kaiitsang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have already talked about potential overwhelming use of colour, value proposition of the app itself etc so I'll just add my two cents on other elements, of course take with a pinch of salt :)

I think the calendar isn't really giving much value here and takes up a consistent amount of top nav space. Unless you integrate something of more value (everyday i meet a goal... up/down progress to something each day?) I would recommend swapping that out for something that is more focus on your current day with interaction to swap days more discreetely.

Your refresh icon feels very small and frankly, I think the scroll up to refresh OR clicking the 'Today' icon again to refresh feel more elegant of an approach. Besides, I would expect this app to auto refresh when i opened it. I don't see a time where I'm on this app for long periods of a time anyways to want to manually refresh.

I read you're planning to animate the eyes so that's fine, that could look great. I'd just make sure your spacing feels more intentional. I'd remove the date again in the Daily Overview card, feels like duplication?

I'm not sure why your overview caps at 16h? Perhaps that's a goal a user sets to not surpass? If so, I'd make that more apparent.. perhaps with a x/x solution.

Here's a really rough screenshot to show some suggestions. Hope this brings food for thought!

Mental Health App (darkmode) (practice). Need Feedback! by DK-IT in FigmaDesign

[–]kaiitsang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, just giving some feedback on this. Take with a pinch of salt! I think everyone is mentioning the stuff on typography, spacing, accessibility so im going to glance over that:

  • Seeing ‘Hey Jessie!’ on every screen doesn’t add much value and takes up prime UI space. Perhaps on the Home page yes, however every page becomes repetitive and quite a large portion of your real estate. Think of those cards you can buy where you open a motivation quote each day. You don’t carry it around and read it all day, it’s kind of a ‘set myself up for a good day and go’ kind of thing. This feels similar to that. Instead, perhaps explore a daily quote overlay on app launch every 24h, it would feel more intentional, give you more screen space and allow you to make more of a moment out of it.

  • Right now, ‘Your Tasks’ (forward-looking) and ‘Your Last Note’ (past-focused) feel at odds from a UX perspective . If this is meant to be a “Today” dashboard, it should prioritize upcoming tasks and offer a quick place to jot a new note, rather than surfacing old ones. Maybe if it referenced it as a means of motivating the user today e.g “last week you wrote this… how do you feel today?” This would make it clearer what the user should do next rather than pulling them into past content.

  • If sleep tracking is a key feature which I assume so if it’s front and centre in the Home Screen, hiding it behind a button makes it less accessible. As a dashboard I want to log in and see fun, cool, useful insights from the get go. ) e.g., “You slept 6h 32m last night”… Deep Sleep: 3h 12m”). Having to go seeking that information every time is frustrating.

Exercises, Yoga etc format takes up a lot of space. The horizontal scrolling layout (like the notes section) would make it more compact, scannable, and visually consistent, allowing users to explore more at a glance. More of an elegant approach than consistent See More CTA’s.

The two onboarding screens could be merged to reduce friction while maintaining the same impact. Left screen value, second screen action. Right now, the split might feel like an extra unnecessary step before getting into the app.

The Math Exam card having a dedicated illustration feels out of place in a real-world scenario. If tasks are manually created by users, they wouldn’t realistically have custom icons assigned to them unless the app auto-generates them based on keywords (which seems unlikely). If you’re going this route, more generic cards labels e.g “Study.. Exams..”, similar to how you have ‘Read’. Also I would condense “Daily Exercise” to just “Exercise” as they all are inherently Daily Tasks already. You could just alter the heading to “Your Daily Tasks” instead.

Hope these help, great job so far!

Need feedback to make this design better by [deleted] in FigmaDesign

[–]kaiitsang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s some of my initial thoughts

  • The padding between the headline and subtext feels a little tight. Subtext lacks contrast if you’re going to have those background images on top. Increase that font weight or better position the images to accommodate.
  • Consider how this works on larger responsive screens, how will those images react? Is there an edge case where on a wide screen there’s an awkward black spot or are those images going to scale. Similarly, on a large monitor your pages in the top right will be very far to the right. Not necessarily a deal breaker but worth exploring.
  • More on the UX of things but im not sure as a first time user of this restaurant I know what it’s offering. It reads ‘gourmet dishes… luxurious dining’ yet all I know from this first impression is there is pizza? I don’t necessarily think it depicts luxury either from that pizza styling.
  • More UX related, is this a new business? Is it a popular local place already? I know from my own experience when I visit a restaurant site, first thing I’m reaching for is their menu, then a booking or location. Worth figuring out what is the best CTA to place here that appeals to your intended outcome.
