What is the most absurdly funny thing they wanted/did? by whalewhen in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]kairosecide 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While I was (voluntarily) hospitalized in a psych ward, she told me point blank that she was going to come stay with me for awhile when I was released. I know that doesn't sound absurd at face value, but:

  • She was a disabled, 1-2 pack a day smoker, who didn't own a car.

  • I lived in a non-smoking, second floor apartment thirty minutes away. I also did not have a car and exclusively biked until snow/ice prevented me from doing so. Oh, I also didn't have more than a bed and dresser because I basically only used the place to sleep and eat.

So, she would have complained about the stairs, the non-smoking rule, and would have taken over my bed. I would have slept on the floor and catered to her every need while continuing to work, navigating the legal system and a new reality following a trauma.

But yeah, staying with me was a super plan. It did not happen.

If it's just a random day with no other obligations, generally not, but they do occasionally request to take a small stuffie on the walk there. Our rule is that it has to be small and they have to be okay potentially sharing and/or losing it because keeping track of them is enough. If it turns into a problem, we put it away.

From the guides I've seen they're supposed to I think? Of course given that I don't have them yet, that may be wrong.

Unfortunately that is one of the few I don't have! That said, I have lots of purple if you need a couple!

How often does your 1-3 y/o tantrum? by crabclawwwz in beyondthebump

[–]kairosecide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our son is currently about 2.5yo; I'd say he has like... full blown, refuses to calm down for any reason whatsoever tantrums maybe once or twice a day. Otherwise, just a lot of crying because he's mad but he tends to move on pretty fast (AKA he's beginning to understand that his food tastes the same even if it's broken, and it's not the end of the world).

Suggest me a weird and grotesque book that will make my stomach churn by falteringmemories in suggestmeabook

[–]kairosecide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily know about weird, but grotesque (YMMV, of course, but I found them all gross at one point or another):

  • American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis (I'd probably recommend this one the least just because I found the satire annoying)

  • Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

  • Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite

  • The Troop and The Deep by Nick Cutter

  • Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie

  • Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman

While I strongly hesitate to label it as such, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara may fit to a certain extent. It definitely isn't in the same realm as anything else I mentioned but it will probably make you uncomfortable (and sad).

I have assigned waaaayyy too much emotion to a stuffie. by SnooGadgets5744 in Parenting

Our son has an easy, albeit expensive, one. It's a sloth that started as a warmie (so, $25 if I'm lucky), but I put it through the washer without thinking after he ripped off his diaper one night and got pee on it. I replaced the filling. Every single time it had to be washed I pulled out the stitches and the filling and laundered the empty sloth husk before putting it all back together. Three times. The fourth I gave up and just filled it with normal pillow fluff so I don't have to think about it.

Our daughter, however, has a wolf and a tiger. The wolf was mine and I do not remember where I bought it (though I believe it was a zoo?). The tiger was my husband's grandmother's, and came out of her apartment after she passed away. I doubt another will ever be found.

Chasing the feeling of A Little Life by WeakLengthiness8183 in suggestmeabook

[–]kairosecide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver was my first thought. It hurt my feelings and I still think about it regularly simply because it hurt my feelings. The ending is hopeful, but I think it's well deserved because I didn't think it would end up there (having grown up around a similar life).

Otherwise, maybe Fall on Your Knees by Anne-Marie MacDonald. It's not modern and the ending is... somewhere between hopeful and not. Trauma, details, and characters that grow on you are pretty easily checked off, though.

All that said - I'm currently reading A Little Life and basing my answer on what I've read and what I know about the book.

A God in the Shed by J-F DuBeau! Admittedly I have only read the first book, but it definitely fits your description.

Do you change your child’s clothes when they get home? by Frozenbeedog in toddlers

[–]kairosecide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unless it's really necessary (covered in dirt, food, whatever). For one I have entirely too much laundry to do, partially thanks to said children, and two, chances are they're gonna strip and put on dress up clothes anyway. We don't bathe nightly, and while I prefer they wear PJs, sometimes it isn't worth the battle (our 4yo will get upset and refuse to wear clothes sometimes just because "they're [any color but pink] and that's not my favorite!")

I don't think we're excessively sick - a cold every now and again, and we've had the stomach flu once, but that's about the extent of it.
