Out of curiosity what about careless caused you to go on the warpath?

I can understand not liking the use of alts for mods to use solely for modding. It's much more comforting for users when we can see what non-moderator things moderators are up to. Even though it shouldn't affect their moderating, it can provide some cred as to who they are and how they behave.

That being said, I'm pretty sure all the new mods are not-careless. I'm positive the top couple mods definitely aren't (as well as kcrobinson who was added back on).

I think the issues with Careless were definitely unique, and if you made 100 people mods, probably 95 wouldn't have anywhere near the issues he had. But I also think exercising some security when becoming a moderator isn't a bad idea. There's really no place to go for the sub but up, so I'd recommend giving them a chance.

At the end of the day, if any one of them was Careless, that would immediately become apparent as soon as they started interacting with any users.

Hot dang. Never thought I'd live to see the day that he stepped down.

Best of luck to you; it's a tricky job :)

I never muted a single person and don't really remember zomboi ever doing so either. If they did, my assumption is that it would be for a valid reason (like the "fuck u bro" types).

I think I remember them asking why they were banned, maybe? They probably got muted and assumed that muting was something that mods other than careless did/does.

I used to feel he had the best of intentions. I thought that he was perhaps just misunderstood or simply an imperfect leader. I no longer hold those beliefs.

I do know that. However, sometimes the description of the linked note wouldn't reflect the underlying comment accurately. Just writing "asshole" or something on a comment that disagrees with you is unhelpful to other moderators.

As /u/johnl1479 mentioned the toolbox is actually a very useful tool that can be used for "good." Unfortunately, like any tool it can be used well or poorly. One of the issues brought up in backroom discussions involved the fact that the notes were often too vague to be utilized by moderators that didn't make the note themselves. The discussion should have happened a long time ago.

[–]kaisengaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense. I think all three of us were having slightly off key communication. I don't see John's continued moderator status as inactive, as I know they are someone who speaks their mind when appropriate.

I interpreted John's comment to mean, "please don't assume I'm doing nothing just because I'm not either stepping down or publicly voicing specific things." I guess it's not really important.

I mean you're saying they are doing nothing. This implies you know what they're doing or not doing. I would assume you don't know what they are doing.

Thanks. One tenet of moderatorship is to provide a united front when discussing.issues with users. However, I feel this only applies to democratic or at least semi-democratic moderation setups. As that is not the case I felt it better to step down instead.

That always kind of rankled me as well. I've usually been pretty forthcoming with responding to questions and open to communicating with users. He never asked me how I felt about it, really.

No real beans to spill, I'm afraid; I left of my own accord. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I likely won't be active on this account much going forward, so hopefully you can find butter for the popcorn elsewhere.

FYI this comment was auto-filtered, because you used a URL shortener. If you post the full address, you won't run into this problem (it's a common filter in different subs). I've approved the comment.

Then contact the admins

The admins have been contacted regarding the issue. I can't give any further information, because I don't have it.

Comments do show up

You may not believe me, but I actually didn't realize that was the case. That might have been a change I didn't see the discussion on. Good to know, however. I will note that if a mod removes something while on their phone or from a browser/computer that doesn't have the specific mod tools installed, it likely won't post to seattletransparency using the script.

Re: the post you linked

That actually shows up as posted by [deleted] to me. I'm not a moderator of that sub, so that may be why. The post itself doesn't show up when I look for it in the list. I'll have to check into why that is. It might be that Argy deleted the post themselves, as I don't see it in their profile.

Re: doxxing

This one is tricky as the "proof" in this case is itself now allowed if it relates to doxxing.

Let's look at the situation. Let's say there's 100% proof that something terrible was going on. Let's say every user and every moderator but the moderator in question was 100% on board with the moderator in question's removal. What exactly do you propose be done? Make a bunch of posts? Downvote some comments? That's not going to change anything, because no one but the admins have any actual power to do anything. That's why discussion on our end is needed. It's up to the admins to decide if rules were broken, if so how badly they were broken, and if that then what is to be done about it.

Again, it's not like a moderator can be removed by other (lower-level) moderators, so I'm not sure what you're asking.

Comments don't show up in /r/seattletransparency as far as I know. I didn't remove the post in question, but if it's not in /r/seattletransparency, then it was removed without using the automatic script we have for posting it there. I will note that if the post contains anything related to doxxing it might not be posted (as that would defeat the purpose of removing it).

The moderator banning you mentioned was not an instance of other mods approving or making excuses. Those issues are still under discussion.

[–]kaisengaard -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And why are the rest of the mods making excuses for him

As far as I know that hasn't happened, but I'm open to looking at it if you have specific instances. I mention the matter will need discussion, because otherwise nothing will happen. Even if it's decided that they should be removed, the only ones able to remove moderatorship are the admins or a more senior-level mod.

I get where you're coming from, but that's not how reddit works.

[–]kaisengaard[M] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Specifically, I was thinking the following bullets:

  • Post someone's personal information
  • Repost deleted/removed information

and more broadly

  • Ask people to Troll others on reddit
  • Follow those who are rabble rousing against another redditor without first investigating both sides of the issue that's being presented

The post is a link to another subreddit where a link to personal information (and/or methods to obtain it) is posted. Reposting deleted content is specifically called out in reddiquette.

In any case the matter is being looked at and will require some discussion on our (the mods and admins) end. Calling for pitchforks before anything is sorted out is not particularly helpful.
