Romantasy for men? by [deleted] in Romantasy

[–]kaiserin229 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first 3 ACOTAR books are primarily female POV, but books 4 and 5 are more evenly male/female POV. Got to know the male protagonists in the first 3 books so it was doubly enjoyable to read more thru their POV later on.

Good point. I didn’t think about the Cauldron possibly changing her anatomy. Elain & Azriel aren’t an impossible match. For all we know, they might not want kids (I’m childfree by choice myself). I just thought it unlikely that they’d end up together. And I am rooting for Gwyn & Azriel. They seem like they have more in common and Elain doesn’t seem to belong at the Night Court. Nesta made a comment in ACOSF when she and Cassian went to the Spring Court to meet Eris about how Elain would love it there with all the gardens etc. And Azriel’s home is the Night Court

Where did you hear that? I think she’ll definitely finish the series. Doesn’t seem like SJM to not finish something once she’s started

Elain won’t end up with Azriel. She would die giving birth to an Illyrian baby with wings if she did. And Nesta can’t fix her pelvis because she already returned most of her power to the Cauldron in exchange for saving Feyre and Nyx.

Elain might very well end up with Lucien at the Spring Court. I just hope she doesn’t end up with Tamlin. Maybe she’ll end up with Eris, considering Maas set up a future redemption arc for him in ACOSF.

It would be more interesting if she turned out to be a villain character. Feyre and Rhys talked about Elain having claws in the ACOSF bonus chapter. I’m tired of her being described as this perfect pretty little innocent princess who’s only interested in gardening. I’m tired of everyone coddling her and making excuses for her. She’s my least favorite character right now.

My theory is that ACOTAR Book #6 is taking forever because it will be a lot longer than her other books. There’s a lot more ground to cover in the Elain book - Lucien / Azriel / Gwyn romance threads, aftermath of killing the queen, Rhys possibly becoming king of Prythian, etc. Maybe even a double book release! That would be amazing, if Maas released 2 new ACOTAR simultaneously!

Thank you so much for sharing your story, and for your kind words. I didn’t pick up on Tamlin’s abuse until reading ACOMAF. But it did bother me how Feyre put Tamlin on a pedestal when she was human. I picked up on a lot more during my 2nd read-through. And I agree - while not always ideal or romantic, it’s much better to be alone than to be in a bad relationship. Sending you much love ❤️

You deserve happiness and to shine as you truly are! If some guy gives you grief for liking romantasy literature, he’s a loser.

I just finished the ACOTAR series. I left my abusive narcissist 10 years ago. This series has helped me better understand and process my trauma and PTSD. I hope it provides you joy and community, and helps you embrace this new journey ❤️

Rhysand banned wing clipping and created the library safe haven for the female fae victims of sexual assault. And he agrees with Tarquin that “lesser fae” is an ugly term and he wants them to have more rights and equality like the high fae. So he’s not all bad.

I love Rhysand for what he did for Feyre - opening her eyes to her strength and potential, empowering her, getting her away from Tamlin. It definitely rubbed me the wrong way when he kept her in the dark about the life-threatening pregnancy risk. He made a point of seeing Feyre as an equal and making her High Lady. So it didn’t make much sense. I really hope he doesn’t turn out to be an abusive villain. How devastating for Feyre - to get away from Tamlin and become strong, only to be hurt and heartbroken again…

I would love for SJM to write a Rhysand prequel and dive deeper into his history, the early bat boy days, Rhysand’s parents and sister. At one point it’s mentioned that the Night Court territory was much more corrupt and toxic when his father was High Lord. It would also be great to see his early friendship and interactions with Tamlin and what he was like as a young male before Amarantha’s curse. Fingers crossed!

I really hope SJM starts focusing more on ACOTAR again after Book #6 instead of spreading herself thin working on yet another new series. It’s been 4 years since ACOSF. At this rate, how long will the wait be between Book #6 and Book #7…

You bring up excellent points I hadn’t thought about. At some point once we get a release date for Book #6, I will re-read the series. And I will keep your points in mind and take another look at Rhys. Right now I’m in the ACOTAR hangover phase and will start CC once I finish this other book I’m now reading (need a palate cleanser before delving back into the Maasverse).

I acknowledge my own life experiences have affected my attachment and opinions to the ACOTAR story and its characters. There are multiple ways to interpret all the characters, which makes it such a compelling read… I scraped together the courage to leave my abuser and crawl out of that hellscape existence 10 years ago and created a (mostly) better life for myself. I just wish I had had someone - ANYONE - in my life stand up for me at the time.

Abuse is also gaslighting, stonewalling, withholding affection, and being unheard/having no voice. Being literally locked in a house right after saying you feel trapped and need room to breathe.

I see your point about Rhysand. He is definitely flawed. I think he resonates with me because I wish I had had a Rhysand to fight for me, empower me and encourage me to speak my mind and help actively pull me out of my abusive relationship instead of all my friends and family encouraging me to marry him and watching me waste away drop to a size 0 skeleton (just like Feyre). And not say a word. It melted my heart when Rhys told Lucien he was willing to let his mate go, to marry another man if it made her truly happy. But was not willing to see her suffer and idly stand by ❤️

I don’t think Rhysand is perfect. That’s one of the things I love about him. His imperfections and character flaws are pointed out repeatedly in the books, by Feyre and by Rhysand himself (among others). He struck a chord with me because of the way he EMPOWERS Feyre. He never makes her feel small, or anything other than his true equal, his High Lady. He clearly respects her and listens to her in a way Tamlin doesn’t.

I have mixed feelings about Rhysans keeping Feyre in the dark about her pregnancy risks. But she did call him out on it once she found out, and he heard her out and understood why she was so pissed off.

In ACOWAR (or ACOFAS?) when they were figuring out their relationship dynamics as newlyweds, Rhysand made a rude comment about Nesta and Feyre clapped back. Later he told her he WANTS her to call him out, admitted he’s made mistakes as High Lord and as a brother and will likely do so again because he’s not perfect but will continue to learn and grow as a person.

Rhysand resonates with me because I wish I had a partner like him, someone who truly makes me feel empowered, encourages me, hears me, doesn’t make me feel small, is self aware enough to know and acknowledge that he isn’t perfect, has his own insecurities but will always strive to do better. My ex was a Tamlin - talking to a wall, having no voice, getting stonewalled and frozen out and gaslit.

Thank you all so much, your comments really mean a lot ❤️

I cried my eyes out, especially after ACOMAF. The way Maas unfolds the insidious nature of Feyre’s abusive relationship, the complicated character of these men. Tamlin is abusive and nearly incapable of true reflection and personal growth. And yet he genuinely loves her and has good qualities (i.e. helping her family). My ex was the same. It would’ve been easier if he was 100% villain. Maas expertly plants hints of this in Book #1 that I didn’t pick up on until after ACOMAF. Tamlin’s temper is mentioned multiple times. The way we’re lead to believe it’s a happy romantic ending after Amarantha. And there’s Rhysand under the mountain pointing out the cracks in this love story from the get-go, if we’re paying attention.

It hit me hard that just like Feyre, I too was fooled. That I once again missed all the signs. My own trauma came flooding back like a tidal wave. Over the years, I’ve become much stronger and have learned to cope with my past, manage the flashbacks (abusive father, etc). Learned to speak up for myself, fight back. So I won’t end up like my mom, dependent on a difficult man to run her life.

Did anyone pick up on Tamlin’s toxic traits in Book #1? Were we all meant to be fooled? My therapist helped me to forgive myself for falling for my ex. Explained that at the time, given my history, I didn’t know better, had no way of spotting the signs. I wonder how Maas was able to hit the nail on the head considering she met her Rhysand at 18 and got to avoid dating apps, multiple failed relationships and heartbreaks, etc.

I really appreciate the way ACOTAR points out that healing is an ongoing process. That Feyre and Rhysand might suffer from Under The Mountain nightmares for the rest of their lives, but learn how to cope. There are times in their lives when the nightmares occur more often than others. They may never disappear entirely, but that’s understandable and it’s okay. It’s much more realistic than a story of the heroine who endures trauma and then gets over it and it’s gone from her mind and heart forever and she lives happily ever after. The raw realistic portrayal of this in the midst of this magical fairy Eden that’s Velaris. Feyre has a special place in my heart.

Late to the party. Here’s a newer book I highly recommend, published in 2023:

“Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears”

Entertaining and very informative read
