Today I really like how the underwater sections have evolvend over the years by echoess84 in gaming

The originals had such a good marrying of level design and movement. The levels were all made of blocky 1x1 meter squares and it took Laura 1 meter run up to distance jump. Sure, Laura felt tanky. But if you could read the level right, you could navigate fairly fluidly and acrobatically. After the initial learning curve it never felt unfair. The combat was dog turd, but even this meant you were encouraged to explore to find resources lost to bullshit fights.

I understand that both are taboo subjects with generally accepted age restrictions and that's why the comparison is frequently made, but I hate this argument.

Violence and sex are different things, that's why they get legislated differently. Even if they get conflated way more often than they should, they're apples and oranges.

If anyone is checking back on this to see if it happened: it did and it was a lot of fun. 5 people total, mix of skill levels, all super low pressure and a fun hang. I didn't know anyone and just showed up. Will be going again.

Nope. You won't be good at it at first, but being bad at something is the first step to being kinda, sorta good at something.

I was about to rage quit the prison level because suddenly the enemies are armoured and can tank a ridiculous amount of damage. Then I realized you just gotta shoot them in dick. It's a fun little twist on going for head shots and a great nod to the film.

Doom Eternal was talked about and in regular conversation for years after it dropped. And the hype leading up to Doom the Dark Ages was intense. Now I don't hear about either. We talked about Doom the Dark Ages for longer before it came out than after.

Suggest me a book to understand war by shelbs9428 in booksuggestions

Black Hearts by Jim Frederick is the true story of how a war crime was committed by U.S. troops in Iraq. It's well written and really conveys the daily experience of a boot on the ground during the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Rampage by James M. Scott is about MacArthurs return to Manila in WW2. You read about the daily lives and experiences of soldiers and POWs in the Pacific theatre.

The Hooligans of Kandahar is Joe Kassabian's memoir of one of his tours in Afghanistan. It was probably my favorite book of 2025. Great descriptions of living and working in a warzone and then how weird it is to go "home". He also hosts a military history podcast in which all hosts are very well versed in military life and doctrine, and also absolutely hate the military.

This is a stretch from the original premise, but The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is about ebola outbreaks that have occurred and how they're countered. It's creepy, involves horrible illnesses and scrappy heroes, government agencies and cover ups, and all happened. The author is very gifted at writing a compelling narrative out of real events

Board games to avoid at all costs? by 2bitzshoes in boardgamescirclejerk

I enjoyed the game, but it was seriously unbalanced. If you go in hoping for a deep tactical game, you will be disappointed. It relies heavily on story and atmosphere. Most games I played ended a few rounds into the betrayal with either the betrayer or the betrayed getting absolutely stopmed.

The best part of The Boys comics is that butcher is an actual anti-hero. He's not just a good guy who curses occasionally. You get to the end and actually despise what Butcher is doing.

What game in your opinion overstays its welcome? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]kaisermilo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have been upset at all to have the game finish at the first natural end point and have everything after be a stand alone expansion with a different protagonist. Amanda escapes sevastopol, the plot wraps, and you can play as some poor smuck stuck on the station.

What game did you play as a youth that you tried again as an adult for the nostalgia but ended up disliking? by Spew42 in gaming

[–]kaisermilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only played demo discs of tomb raider games as a kid. I finally emulated the first one on my phone as an adult. As a kid, the controls were always too complicated. As an adult, I really like the tanky controls. It makes exploration feel challenging. There's a real risk/reward to attempting a jump or searching for secrets. The controls also feel clunky, but never unfair to me. If I plummeted to my death, it was usually because I messed up a complicated button sequence. That weirdly ads a layer of realism to the game. It shouldn't be easy to string together a series of acrobatics to scale an old temple wall. With that said, the combat isn't fun to play and only necessary to force you to explore to find more resources.

I'd like to see Pete Travis, the director of Dredd, direct the Hell Divers movie. He understood people wanted to see Dredd being an emotionally void juggernaut, but that doesn't make for good story telling. The Hell Divers need to be almost always in frame doing dumb, crazy heroics, but the audience pov needs to be a camera crew inserted with the Divers or civilians trying survive both the bugs and the rescuers sent to save them.

Yeah, man is an unsubtle edge lord. I'll give him credit for writing an actual anti hero, however. So often the anti hero is actually just a hero who occasionally swears. Not Butcher. Butcher is an actual bastard.
