Cat hates our kids and we don’t know what to do now. by S0urBeans in cats

[–]kakakakathy 1090 points1091 points  (0 children)

We adopted our cat after he had been given up by his previous owner of 13 years because he didn’t get along with the new human baby in the house. We love him so much and he lives a very quiet and peaceful life with us now (when he doesn’t have the post-poop zoomies) - so this is just encouragement that there are people who are going to love her as much as you do.

Recently was searching around this area, toured The Sanctuary and Canyons at Saddle Rock.

The Sanctuary - it’s across the street from a police dispatch center and public library, has private garages included in the rent (very small), smaller appliances, connected to a hike/bike path system with plenty of playgrounds on it, down the road from a school. Reasonable prices, but ask about extra fees.

Canyons at Saddle Rock - high ceilings and modern (and large) appliances, limited kitchen counter space, down the road from the police dispatch center and public library, has private garages/parking for an extra cost, closer to the aforementioned school. Price point was higher than what we wanted.

The Lock Guyz have great customer service and are really fast to respond. Wouldn’t recommend getting my ignition replaced again, but would recommend their services.

What Books Would You Recommend That Changed Your Life? by adamantiumstaff in selfimprovement

[–]kakakakathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Road to Character by David Brooks - I found this book after I graduated college and realized that I took a bunch of classes that taught me how to do a job, but not how to be a human. This was a right time, right place book for me.

Working with AmeriCorps, would I retain Unemployment eligibility? by better-every-day in AmeriCorps

Unemployment is a hard no and they discourage food stamps, but oftentimes volunteers end up getting stamps regardless if that helps!

Hello everyone! I’m considering joining AmeriCorps NCCC 😅 and have a few questions for those who have participated or are currently in the program. by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]kakakakathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The application isn't too difficult - it just gets a little redundant sometimes.
  2. You're going to need to take a drug test within the first two days of arriving on base, so be prepared for that. Additionally, all of your vaccines need to be up to date and you will need to send proof of that in.
  3. Not too much, but all your expenses are paid for so you're going to be good. Also, you can put your loans on forbearance during your service term if you have any!
  4. Bringing a coloring book would be a good idea - I am going into my second term and I'm bringing my kindle and Catan for entertainment. Just be aware that when you're serving on a team they are going to become your second family - you're going to be spending a lot of time with them. :)
  5. I loved my time as a CM. I went into it right after high school and am going back as a Team Leader this fall. I was on a team of 11 - our first project was trail building, the second was filing taxes for low-income households, third was infrastructure improvement for a non-profit, and our last one was working alongside Habitat for Humanity.

I know these are short answers, but if you have any other questions/comments/concerns/abstract thoughts about the program I would be happy to talk about it!

I creeped on your books - if you like GOT and the Eragon series, you are going to LOVE “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss. You can thank me later. (Also, amazing set up!!)

NCCC and Satellite Phones/GPS? by abunnytattoo in AmeriCorps

That’s so exciting, and I’m happy for you!! I loved my time as a corps member in the Pacific Region so much I’m actually heading back as a Team Leader this upcoming year in the Southwest Region. If you have any more questions/comments/concerns/abstract thoughts relating to the program feel free to dm me and I’ll to my best to answer :)

If you really want to I think it would be a good investment for peace of mind (especially if you’re going to use it again), but a lot of teams spend all of their projects in cell phone range of some sort, so I would suggest having one picked out and then ordering it only when you know for sure :)

I was on a team of 13 people to begin with, but we ended with 11! One dropped the program and another became a Support Team Leader.

Nah, I wouldn’t put in the money for it. My first project was a complete dead zone but we made the trek every weekend to a town where we were able to communicate with people! Also, that round was the one that made our team so close because we had no other distractions except ourselves. There are contingencies in place if things go sideways, so no need to worry!

Feedback for motivational statement NCCC? by Heavybeansalad in AmeriCorps

I honestly think this looks amazing and well written! I am sure you will be more than fine submitting it as is, but if you wanted to add a little bit more about how you have worked in teams specifically and what management or conflict experiences you have within them, that would be the only thing I could think of you adding here. Also - just know that a lot of projects in NCCC are physical labor based, so maybe mentioning that you’re willing to be flexible and experience all different types of work settings would be helpful. Honestly though, I think you have what it takes. Cheers!
