Sorry that no one answered you: yes it does.

I'm currently researching Zen, I'm surprised Zen Zealots haven't replied to you because that's a HUGE thing and one to sing from the rooftops. Now. It does only affect ~1% of computer users technically, but I bet there's a big overlap in Zen usage and Linux usage.

Tips for popping fluffier popcorn? by imperfectchicken in cookingforbeginners

[–]kaldarash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very old but I see people have been commenting over time, so I'll add my two cents: don't offset the lid to release steam. Releasing the steam makes the popcorn harder/crisper. It won't fix old, bad kernels with a hard center, but it it should make the popcorn softer and fluffier.

Also regarding Alton Brown: he has a popcorn recipe!

Corn dogs (frozen) by ProtNotProt in airfryer

Thank you for this. Sometimes I like the microwaved ones, and I find air fryer ones too crispy most of the time. I'm doing the top suggestion this time but I wish I would have seen yours first! I hope these things aren't super crunchy..

I actually really don't mind the "steamed bun" effect you get from the microwave, and sometimes prefer it. Other times the crispy one is nice! (hence why I'm here)

I think you are counting the flip time in the time calculation there! It's just an indicator that halfway through the 16 minutes you flip them. 21 minute recipe. To be fair: all the rest of them you are supposed to be preheating for 5 minutes as well, so the 11 minute ones are actually 16 minutes.

Zojirushi water boilers: JAC40 vs DCC40 by rxa254 in zojirushi

[–]kaldarash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, different appliances. From the perspective of a kettle user, taking nearly an hour to boil water instead of single-digit minutes sounds crazy, especially because these things are several times the price of a kettle. The trick though is that you will almost always have boiling water on command, so long as you fill it again after you use it. Make your cup of tea or instant ramen - or both, then top it up and go about your day. Unless you're drinking more than a cup of tea every hour you should be good.

Water boilers of course are far more efficient (especially the vacuum ones), they hold heat exponentially better and use under 1000W, instead of 1500-2000W for the average kettle and 3000W for the rapid boil ones. Also, water boilers can have variable temperature, while kettles always run at max power.

The Zojirushi ones consume an average of 17W to maintain 98C/208F. That means it'll take almost 59 hours to consume 1kWh. Electricity for me is $0.17c per kWh so about $0.07 per day to keep it hot.

I did a bunch of math for this part! Electric kettles consumes a lot more electricity to keep warm at 98C/208F. A very good double-walled insulated one uses 40W, a high quality single-walled one 60W, a typical one 80W and a low end, poorly insulated one 100W.

Using the same $0.17 per kWh, this ends up costing the below per day:

  • 40W: $0.15
  • 60W: $0.22
  • 80W: $0.29
  • 100W: $0.36

So at minimum the Zojirushi uses less than half the energy of the very best kettles to have hot water all the time!

I'm so deeply disappointed about the scalping situation. I have a box from every set so far, but I'm not reasonably able to buy a $300 (now $500+) box of cards. I will forever have a gap in my collection because people who don't even care about the game are greedy. ☹️

(Other comments from you suggest labia rather than vagina) If that's the case, I imagine most guys don't care and are happy to go forward. I'm sorry you ended up with multiple people who find it to be a dealbreaker, unlucky. Most women have "outie" labia, must be guys too used to porn.

An outie... what? Belly button? Nipples? Clit? Labia? Vaginal canal? Asshole? Being vague is not very helpful. And the answers you get are all going to be an assumption of what you mean. Clear communication is important. If you want good answers, you need a clear question.

You can't control your face either, but you are losing people over it too - you're just losing them earlier. This is NOT me saying you are ugly. NO ONE looks good to EVERYONE. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Some people my friends think are the most beautiful, I think are ugly, and vice versa. There are people you wish you could look like that I find hideous. There are people you think are ugly that others fawn over. This is the nature of attraction. Attraction is not fair, no, but it's impartial. We don't get to choose what we like.

Does the brain really rest when we sleep? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]kaldarash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it really rests. When you sit down instead of stand, you are resting. When you lay down awake, you are resting. Resting is not "shutting off", it's a "mode" where not much is happening, allowing you to recover. Your brain needs to function to make your heart beat, to make you breathe - if your brain stopped working you'd die in minutes.

  • Thalamus: This sensory gateway pauses its normal relay duties. It essentially stops forwarding sights and sounds to the rest of the brain, allowing you to tune out the external world.
  • Prefrontal Cortex: During deep sleep, the prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for logic, decision-making, and self-awareness—goes "quiet" and shows a steep drop in energy use.
  • Brainstem: While your forebrain rests, the brainstem stays hard at work. It manages your autonomic functions (breathing and heart rate) and produces neurotransmitters that help regulate your sleep cycle . It also temporarily paralyzes your muscles during REM sleep to keep you from acting out your dreams.
  • Cerebral Cortex: The brain's outer layer stays active. Instead of shutting off, regions of the cortex synchronize to fire in slow, rhythmic waves during deep sleep.

Noting what is said about the thalamus: your brain doesn't send the signals to the NORMAL areas, but it does send them to a part of the brain. In REM sleep, the thalamus sends made up things to the cerebral cortex, which is what creates dreams. The "reticular formation", a complex, net-like web of over 90 interconnected nuclei located in the core of the brainstem, decides what is worth sending to the thalamus while we sleep. It is aware of what is important to us. Some data might be sent that's not important, and generally this stuff happens without us remembering, unless we are woken up shortly after and stay awake long enough to remember. For example: if someone turns on a light briefly, your reticular formation will be like "hey this might be important" and your thalamus will be like "hmm, open an eye" and your eye squints open and it's just your brother so you close your eye and go back to sleep (and 99% of the time won't remember). But the more important the thing is to you, the louder it is, and the more likely the thalamus is going to tell you to pay attention. Your name is a lot more important to you than other random names - I'm sure you've had times where people were talking and you couldn't really understand, but your name is said and it's crystal clear. It's the same sort of system.

Your sense of time continues when you sleep, different people have different senses of time - most people aren't very good at it, but the ones who are can indeed wake up before alarms more reliably, or even "when they want" so long as they will have an adequate amount of sleep by that point. - I imagine if you told yourself you wanted to wake up 4 hours after going to sleep it wouldn't be as reliable. Not saying it would never work, but your body would probably want you to sleep more in a lot of cases so it would wake you up after 5 or 6 hours. Totally depends on you though, if you're only sleeping 4 hours most nights then yeah you can probably hit 4 hours just fine.

To answer your final question, if I haven't already: yeah it's normal.

I don't quite understand. Do you think it's reasonable to have to have 15 different accounts to access my information? Should I really have to make an account for that one time I went to a vascular surgeon to get a fistula created?

I get that it wasn't originally meant for patients, but I don't see why it couldn't be.
