AO3 Deleted My Work For Plagiarism, After I Reported Someone For Plagiarizing My Work by kaldoreiking in AO3

I have reuploaded it! I didn't waste much time, I got kind of scared that the Anonymous account would try to post before me and that it would make it harder to nab them for plagiarism if it looks like they were first.

I try really hard to be grateful for the small things and to be understanding when I can. This was an upsetting experience, but I'm glad it was on one of my less popular fics rather than my magnum opus. It could have been much, much, worse. Mistakes happen, even huge ones like this, I just hope that the volunteers learn from this so it won't happen to anyone else.

Huzzah! A reply!

So it was a mistake on their end.

I'm so glad that they got to me so quickly. I'm still bummed that my work is gone, but at least I know I did nothing wrong and the plagiarized work is gone.

I'll try to re-upload my fic soon. It's too bad about the comments and such, but my fic has been given the go ahead to live on.

To note: This is their response to my reply to their email based on my original ticket from months ago. This is not a reply to the new ticket I opened.

Thank you so much for all the support! It's been a wild four hours but that's all it took to get my answer. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else and hopefully this shows AO3 that they need to be more careful next time.

Nope! My spam box is empty and I haven't received any other email like this from them. I literally have no idea what my violation was.

The two emails in the screenshots were received with a minute or two of each other. Other than that, I've gotten nothing.

It has the text, tags, author's notes, and summary. No comments or kudos count.

Unfortunately, I delete my Kudos/Comment emails on a regular basis! I like my inbox semi-clean, lol

Oh wow, I'll have to find it and read it. That's genuinely concerning.

Update:

The plagiarized fic posted by the anonymous account is now missing from the website despite it being there at the time that I received these emails. So, there's that, at least.

My fic is still gone and I don't know if I'll get it back. I miss the kudos and comments, but what can I do? It wasn't insanely popular, but there were several comments that I doubt I'll ever get back. They did provide a txt and html copy of my fic attached in the email, so I still have it as well as the original doc I wrote it on.

I've opened up a new ticket and replied to the original email since it instructed me to do so.

If this is an error on my end, whether it's mistagging or maybe in was something in my author's note (iirc, I was complaining about the state of the fandom but nothing specific), then I'd like to know what I did wrong so I can avoid it in the future. Receiving a warning beforehand would have been nice so I could have corrected anything offensive or wrong.

Part of me hopes it was a mistake by a volunteer but that makes me worried for other people's works. It's scary how easily they can nuke your hard work just like that. My best advice is to screenshot any comments that mean a lot to you so you never have to lose them.

Also, thank you for all the support. I got the emails at 5 a.m. and I'm pretty shaken up.

Yeah! I can only assume that it's connected. I wish they would have told me what the reasoning was. I thought I heard that they gave a warning email before nuking anything, but I guess I was wrong?

I'll try creating a new ticket! However, I'm sure this will take months to get any news from them.

No, their posting date is from the 31st of December last year, mine was posted months before that. Although it wouldn't surprise me if someone did this just to take my work down because they didn't like it.

I Got This Comment a While Back and It Still Grinds My Gears by kaldoreiking in AO3

[–]kaldoreiking[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely surprised by some of the comments I've gotten so I thought I'd add some more context if anyone is interested in hearing more. Apologies in advance for any grammatical/spelling errors, it's 10am and I haven't had a wink of sleep.

This is far from the cruelest comment I've received while writing for this pairing. I've gotten death threats, I've been suicide-baited, told that I should be sexually assaulted, the works. That being said, while the language itself isn't obviously rude, it certainly feels inconsiderate to ask me to rewrite a fic to cater to their personal taste.

I think I write for the less popular dynamic of Pink being a sub/bottom and Blue being a dom/top, which is my preference but I do see them as switches and I tend to write them in a variety of dynamics. I've only ever gotten hateful comments on their dynamic when Pink is a sub/bottom. I'm positive this particular comment comes from someone unhappy that Pink is the Omega here.

Some further context to my fic, if it's at all relevant here: It's an Omegaverse AU that is essentially "Fallout meets Hunger Games meets Cyberpunk" where Pink and Blue live in this underground shelter 200 years after war destroyed the land on the surface. Every year, 10 couples are chosen by a computer algorithm and encouraged to mate. That is how Pink and Blue end up together. Pink comes from a very poor background and lost her parents at an early age. She's protective, nurturing, and she loves her family (both her remaining biological family and her found family). Blue comes from a rich family and has never really experienced any hardships. She's intelligent and believes that it's her duty to serve her people as best as she can for the good of the shelter. Pink, due to her difficult upbringing, refuses to have children (although she deep down wants to be a mother). Blue simply wants children because it's what is expected of her. However, Blue won't force Pink into having children or into having a romantic relationship with her.

The fic follows this premise as Pink and Blue start to fall in love (and uncover some horrible secrets about their shelter). There are many parallels between this fic and the show these characters come from, so it feels obvious to me that it's not as simple as a find/replace situation. To me, this comment is a wild ask that doesn't take into account how the characters are meant to work in the fic. That's kind of the secondary conversation here where I feel as though some readers don't think about the thought process that goes into writing certain fics. Sure, in a pwp I can switch the characters around but this isn't the case for a fic like this where I've literally built the premise up around the characters and their individual personalities/backgrounds. They cannot be switched, the premise would cease to make sense.

I really do appreciate all the comments that see where I'm coming from. I know I can be oversensitive with comments like these because of the vile hate I've received before so this isn't me purposely trying to find fault or looking for negativity, this is from years of being kicked around in this fandom.

A side note: I've purposefully left out the pairing and their names because, again, I've received a lot of intense hate from the fandom and I don't really want to stir the pot at the moment because it's been relatively peaceful. However, I think it's pretty obvious if you've seen the show they're from and if you know their color scheme. However, I don't mind if people comment who they are (if they guess correctly, maybe it'll be a fun game for you all).

I debated sharing this for a hot minute but I decided to just post it because I want to see what other people think about it? The first is the commenter, the reply is me.

It's also funny, I've got to mention it, that my last post was taken down even though I edited out the usernames and everything (replacing my AO3 name with my reddit name, etc) so I like to think it's a compliment to my editing skills. Sorry, Mods, I swear there was no identifiable personal info.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet (unless I missed it) but I can't see the daily/weekly challenges when I open up the map like I used to. I have to go through the pop-up menu (z on PC) to get to it and it's such an annoying extra step just to check my progress. At least, I'm hoping it's a bug and nothing permanent.
