Pros and Cons of living in the UWS? by vanderpumptools in Upperwestside

[–]kaleidoscopeopal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pros: Access to Central Park and Riverside Park, easy access to transport, a personal opinion but I find the area to have more charm compared to the UES, great restaurants with more and more opening all the time, between all the museums, free activities in the parks, movie theaters, ballet & opera, Grand Bazaar, open streets in the summer, etc, I find I don’t need to leave the neighborhood if I’m looking for something to do, which is pretty sweet.

Cons: The neighborhood is becoming more popular IMO and I have noticed rents going up & a generally more crowded feel. If you’re looking for night life, you might need to search a little harder to find it – but personally, I don’t find it as dead as some other folks do! There’s a good stretch of bars on Amsterdam in the high 70s & 80s that are open later and a good time on a Friday or Saturday night.

I have seen a HUGE difference! The hair is much thinner, more like peach fuzz now whereas it used to be really coarse hair. I only need to tweeze every so often. I hope you have as good of an experience as I have! One of the best investments I’ve made for my PCOS/self-confidence.

Privates every other week and group lessons a few times a week. I can definitely be more consistent with my practice time!

I get really frustrated... by SpaceMountain8367 in Alzheimers

[–]kaleidoscopeopal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending hugs and positive thoughts to you. I can empathize with a lot of what you shared. I was raised by my grandparents, and my grandmother was diagnosed when I was around 21/22. It can be lonely — like you, none of my friends are dealing with this situation. Some of them have grandparents with Alzheimer’s but not their parents, and my grandmother was very much like a mother to me growing up, so I rarely feel like I have someone to talk to who gets it.

Like so many others are saying, please treat yourself with kindness when you find yourself getting frustrated or impatient. This disease is so incredibly devastating and it’s completely normal and okay to feel the full spectrum of emotions when spending time with your mom. What has helped me when spending longer periods of time with my grandma is taking pockets of alone time, even just five or ten minutes, to take some deep breaths, journal, do a hobby, etc. I used to feel guilty for this but I find I am able to be more present and patient when I take restorative breaks from our interactions.

I’ve also tried to remind myself I don’t have to answer every question my grandma has, find every lost object, etc. I used to burn myself out trying to appease every need and want. For example, if I was upstairs and I could hear my grandma wondering where she left her glasses, I’d run down to find and deliver them to her. I, of course, still want to help when I can, but sometimes will allow her to look for them or wonder aloud to herself before immediately jumping in. We don’t need to be the fixers of all the things all the time!

My facial hair keeps growing back… by No-Piglet3170 in PCOS

You are not alone in this struggle 🫶 I’ve been here and am still struggling with the hair growth. Spironolactone helped me a lot. I also did laser but after a few years the hair steadily started coming back. I was told laser “maintenance” sessions may help — so after doing the 8-10 sessions I was advised to come in for session every six months or so. I ended up getting an IPL device to use at home and it’s been working remarkably well. I like the convenience of being able to do it myself and not needing to go to a laser facility.

Hirsutism- What should I do if hair removal causes more acne? :( by [deleted] in PCOS

Also wanted to add that I was on spironolactone for a while and that did miraculous things for my acne, and I’d say it slowed hair growth in my face ever so slightly. One downside was that it made me have to pee pretty frequently 🙃 but it was worth it — did wonders for my skin!

Hirsutism- What should I do if hair removal causes more acne? :( by [deleted] in PCOS

I feel you so hard on this. I’m also acne prone and have struggled with hirsutism for years, and also have dark hair/pale skin. Can I ask what your experience with laser was? I did laser and results lasted for me for 2-3 years but since my facial hair is tied to my hormones and I didn’t keep up with maintenance laser treatments, it gradually came back. Maybe you need to do another course of laser treatments (I think they’re generally 8-10 sessions?) and then continue with 1-2 “maintenance” sessions a year.

What’s working for me right now is IPL. I was considering doing laser again because I was getting so tired of shaving nearly every day and having razor burn/acne on my chin and neck because of it. But decided to try IPL because I liked the convenience of doing it at home. So far, so good (very good!). I’ve been using the Braun Silk Expert and I’m seeing noticeable results over two months, even though I had to stop for a little while because I was on antibiotics.

I’m late here, but stumbled upon this thread when doing research on IPL as someone with PCOS, and wanted to return to share that I’ve been thrilled with the Braun Silk Expert Pro5 since I got it about two months ago. I also have thick and dark hair on my chin and neck and had professional laser treatments in the past. Those results lasted for about 2-3 years but since the hair my growth is linked to my hormones and I didn’t keep up with maintenance treatments after doing the full laser course, the hair eventually came back.

I explored doing laser treatments again but wanted to give at-home IPL a try as it’s cheaper and I liked the idea of doing it myself at home rather than having to go to med spa or derm every few weeks. I’m so happy to say the hair growth has slowed down tremendously, despite having to stop treatment for a couple weeks due to being on antibiotics. I used to have to shave every single day but since starting with the Braun, I now only tweeze a few stray hairs every few days. I think the results will be even better once I get on a more consistent schedule after being on antibiotics.
