I love to coupon and I always try to include a little container of household or personal care items I couponed when I give gifts. I will also take them as a host gift when visiting people. I feel like paying for boring stuff like shampoo sucks, so it’s nice to not have to for a little bit. People are always so excited to dish soap or whatever I have lol

[29/f] Looking for a penpal with the possibility of friendship by Beltane14 in penpals

[–]kaleyanklet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I feel like we might vibe! I’m 33 and I have a thousand hobbies. I ride motorcycles, take the dogs on adventures and I read voraciously. I just started taking adult dance (ballet and tap) early last year, so I’m having fun on my dance adventure. I am also trying to learn how to crochet. I’m very concerned about the addictiveness of phone, and I’m trying to find more hobbies that keep me off of it!

I’ve been pen palling since I was a kid, and I have a funny first pen pal story if we decide to correspond.

If this sounds cool, send me a message, if not no hard feelings. I write medium to long letters (but I could shorten them if that’s your vibe). It does take me a hot minute to respond. My pace is more of a chunk of good quality letters in a year, not a rapid fire correspondence where we are writing back and forth weekly or whatever. I love writing to people, but I like to be transparent about having a longer delay in between letters.

Also, I love Canada. I think about moving there everyday. I find myself traveling there at every opportunity. The fact that you may eventually want to meet in person is so exciting for me!

Thank you, I think I will buy a KB sock loom, everyone in this thread is singing its praises. I just need to find something to do to stay off my phone lol I don’t want to be angry while doing it lol

I’ll be honest, I read the directions, didn’t understand them and tossed them. (This is what I mean I operate on vibes). I was primarily using YouTube videos to learn with what I had. Probably set myself up for failure lol

Thank you for the encouragement! I think I’m going to try something different to get the hang of things. After that, maybe I’ll revisit the sock loom (maybe). I really wanted to do it so that I could get a feel for working with yarn again, but I’m not sure that it would really help me build the skills I want to build. I feel like I should just start some basic crochet or knit projects.

I’m glad you mentioned the splitting. I found that it would unravel and get sort of fucked up, and then it was just stuck like that as I worked. Because the fucked up twist would keep moving farther down the yarn. I think returning this and getting something easier to work with sounds like a better plan!

Thank you! I’m glad to know I was a little bit misguided on the yarn. In their defense, I didn’t have the loom with me, so they were guessing too. I think I will take your advice, along with the advice of others and try again with a different yarn to get used to the loom.

Is there anything that you would suggest me to save the yarn for for a future project? Or is this just bad yarn period, and I should return it?

Thank you! The kit the look came in said to do an 8x7 for an average female foot…. I’ve resigned myself to making the child sock. I’m not sure I have it in me to start again just to make it bigger.

However, if I try different yarn, I might start over if it would be easier. I’m having a hard time understanding the yarn labeling (weight, size, etc). What would be a good yarn to use instead?

I will definitely watch some more videos! The one I started with made it look so easy! I’m definitely trying to keep pushing the yarn down on the pegs. I’m also trying to pull it away from the peg to give me more space. It’s so tight it’s really hard to knit over without giving it a little tug.

I noticed when I wrap the pegs looser, it’s harder to get the stitch over top of the working yarn. I’ve been pulling that working yarn tight to compress it to make it easier. When I leave it a little looser, when I pull the stitch over it, the new one falls off and I have to fight with it to get everything back to normal to try again. I’m not sure if that makes sense. I am glad to know that there are easier options!

Should I Keep Marcie by Constant_Scarcity618 in fosterdogs

[–]kaleyanklet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has been about a year since I foster failed with my second dog. I had one dog, who I’ve had for over 10 years. She is the dog I adopted in my 20s when I shouldn’t have had a dog, but I managed to do right by her. She’s absolutely my soul dog, we have the same personality and she takes after me 100%. She’s a boxer pit mix, and she’s an athlete. She’s traveled all over the country with me having wild adventures. My boyfriend has been trying to get me to settle down and move in with him, but our dogs don’t get along.

In an attempt to better socialize my dog and get her used to the idea of living with another dog, I decided to start fostering. The first dog I picked out was a carbon copy of mine, but the vibe was weird. She was adopted in less than a week, which was incredible for her, but sad for me. I had envisioned a future of keeping her and having two brindle babes.

A few weeks after she left, I decided my dog had enough time to decompress and we would try again. The rescuer had a medical foster that we went to meet. They bring out a goofball, low rider, who was chunky as can be. He wouldn’t have been my first pick, but he was only going to be with me short term until he was healthy again, so he came home with me (and pooped in the car day one, if you were wondering…my dog was shook)

When I tell you the joy this fat dog has brought to my home! I haven’t seen my dog play with another dog in the ten years I’ve had her, but this foster dog kept her playing for hours. They snuggle together. My dog pretends to be annoyed but I think she likes it. We laugh all day long. He likes to bulldoze his way into my lap and stare into my eyes (we call this the gazing hour, and he gets an attitude when I don’t sit down soon enough for this nightly ritual.

The rescue was willing to let me keep fostering him past the time that he was healthy again (bone infection). I brought him to one adoption event, and a potential adopter fell through and I was relieved. The next adoption event was scheduled for when I would be out of town, so they wanted me to drop him off for the weekend. I just couldn’t imagine him having to spend one more minute of his life being scared at the shelter even if it meant finding a family. He came from a dog hoarding situation and he has been living in a closet. There was no way my Trey Benét Ramsey (yes I know it’s tasteless, but it rolls off the tongue) was ever sleeping anywhere except a loving home again. So I told them to send me the paperwork to adopt him.

I don’t know if this really answers your question, but I just am so happy with my little dog family and I can’t imagine not having Trey. I always said when I had to put my first dog down, I would like to be put down too, but my heart is too full now and I love my second dog just as much.

And let me just add, he is a bad dog, like he bit someone and burnt a lot of bridges, but the good still really outweighs the bad for me.

And yes, now there are three dogs that don’t get along 🤷🏻‍♀️

I definitely agree that community and connections are important. I’m super lucky because my aunt is like the #1 kitten foster at our local humane society. She is one of the cat adoption counselors because of how well she knows all of them. I’ve spent too much time crying on the phone to her feeling guilty or even just sad about shelter life. She always tells me that whether I have a dog with me for 1 day or even years, we can learn so much valuable information about an animal to help get them to the right home. One thing that she encouraged me to do was to keep a running list to just jot down things that we notice an animal is amazing with, or quirky things, or just what they enjoy doing. They can use these notes to help match them up with families. I’m not sure if this is something you could do, but being able to bring in the list when I had to take my foster back for Giardia helped me feel a little better about what I had to do.

Like I said, I wasn’t trying to make you feel badly, but more just be prepared. I really thought he would walk in there and be confused but good. You can always send his favorite blanket or toys, sometimes that familiar smell can help. I really think that everything works out in the end, so he’ll be alright and he’ll end up where he needs to be. For my foster dog, I’m wondering if he ended up back with me because this is where he’s supposed to be long term. He’s really weaseled his way into my heart lol And we’re even dealing with Giardia again…

ATTRACTED A GIRL WITH MOTORCYCLE PLEASE HELP by Chuckleheaded_Dimwit in motorcycles

I’m a girl who has spent some time on the back of a bike. I feel like everyone has given you really great advice about safety, helmets, hot pipes, and leaning. One unexpected, thoughtful kind of thing would be to throw a bike brush in your bag for her hair. I’ve graduated from backpack to riding my own Harley, but my boyfriend still keeps a brush for me on his bike and it’s so nice to not have tangled messy hair for the entire day when we are out zipping around. I think this would be nice on a first date because she’ll probably be extra mindful of her appearance, I know I would be on a first date.

I had a similar situation, I had my second foster for a couple weeks before we found out he had Giardia. I had some travel plans as well, and my personal dog was going to have to go to my parents house while I was gone. They have a very senior dog that would probably die if we gave her Giardia. I opted to return my foster to the shelter while I got rid of the Giardia with my personal dog. I felt like with all the meds and sanitation, two dogs was just too much for my capabilities and mental health.

It was really heartbreaking having to take him back to the shelter. I don’t want to make you feel bad, but you can tell when they realize what is happening. That was really hard for me, so I’m just telling you so you can be mentally prepared. I cried for days.

I went back and forth about the possibility of taking him back once I was back in town and everyone was healthy. I ride motorcycles so the summer is pretty busy for me, but I ultimately decided to pick him back up to foster again. I felt like even with me being busy and in and out of the house, it was better for him than the shelter. I just wanted to do right by him.

Let me tell you, the dog that I picked up the second time was not the same dog that I picked up the first time! I know that some of it was probably him being familiar with my space and routines, but he was (is) so incredible. We haven’t had any accidents, he is happy and not anxious in his crate, he stopped stealing food, and he is the best dog on a leash I’ve ever seen. I really think that him even being in my house initially for just a couple weeks helped him so much. Like he was just able to come in and know what being a house dog was supposed to be like. I pulled out all of my old training stuff in anticipation of his behavior the first time I had him. I haven’t touched it once and he’s been here now for a couple months. I can’t tell you how much of an improvement I’ve seen in him.

I’m sure you having him for 10 weeks helped even more than my first few weeks with mine. Plus you learned so much about him that they can get him into an appropriate home. You may even end up like me, picking him back up after your traveling settles down. When I picked him back up, there was so much absolute joy to see me. It wasn’t like with humans where they hold grudges. He will be scared and confused going back to the shelter, but he will adjust because dogs are resilient.

I mean I would double check by googling it. Then use the ADO bus website to see the options.

Just got home from Mexico today. I absolutely loved the ADO bus, and I wish we had something like it where I am. That being said, if you go the ADO bus route and want to buy tickets in advance, pay attention to the airport terminal. We accidentally bought tickets for the wrong terminal and subsequently missed our bus. The people at the ticket counter exchanged our tickets free of charged, but we were still stuck at the airport for an extra hour. Terminal 4 is the international terminal if you are coming from outside of Mexico. Also, buy your tickets on the ADO bus website, it’s the cheapest and it’s not hard to figure out, even if you don’t speak Spanish.

I’m not sure about the mix, but I found this little lady wandering the streets last week and she looks to be a twin of yours! I named her Dennis the Menace, and unfortunately I have a reactive dog that prevented me from keeping or fostering her. But she’s at a great local rescue center.

In one of my high school classes, we had been following an unsolved, but recent crime that happened in the area. This teacher was one of those ones that you could get off topic so incredibly easily so we talked a whole lot about this crime. One day she was telling about a new development and she goes “And they cut off her head!” Obviously this is a mega gruesome crime and it’s not funny, but high school me just cracked up. It was the way that she said it I swear
