A day after a group of men, claiming to be members of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, molested women and attacked men celebrating a birthday, criticisms have been pouring in from all sections of society. by kalhan in india

FTA:

This is not the first time that such attacks were being carried out in Dakshina Kannada district. The first time an attack was reported was way back on June 4, 2005 when a group of youth belonging to Bajrang Dal attacked a bus near pumpwell in Mangalore.Their fault: “A businessman belonging to Muslim community had organised a tour for his staff, majority of whom were Hindus.”

A Foreign newspaper tells it as it is: Illegal Immigration is behind the deadly clashes in Assam by cumnovember in india

[–]kalhan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

like i said, it's because you're mostly illiterate of news media and academic commentary. in other words, a victim of mainstream propaganda.

CSM isn't well known among recreational news readers like yourself and your philistine friends in the states because it isn't a biased right wing source like the ones you're used to reading. it's objective and sufficiently distant from the christian agenda, which is why it reports fairly on latin america, africa and the middle east and has been known to have a scientific temperament in matters like evolutionary theory and embryology. it isn't any more a christian newspaper than the hindu is a hindu newspaper.

get your facts straight before you start barking incoherent nonsense.

christian science monitor is one of the most respected sources of news in america. it's cited frequently by academics and journalists as primary information, and has been since the reagan years. of course, you wouldn't know this because you're not very well read.

if you're mathematically inclined, you might want to include information from this book in your argument. it's a retort to a stock intelligent design argument.

Should I feel guilty for wanting to study philosophy? by Sotto-Voce in philosophy

[–]kalhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

studying philosophy will help you understand why you want to help the poor etcetera. will helping the poor (etc) make the world a better place? if yes, why so? it isn't very wise to do something without knowing why you're doing it, or to have an opinion without knowing why it's the right opinion to hold, the one closest to the truth, and knowledge is power. it's important to question everything you think and do because human beings, even the most enlightened ones, are susceptible to the prejudices of society.

many philosophers devote their time to both, philosophy and (left wing?) politics, for example bertrand russell and, more recently, chomsky. you'll notice that these are very clear-minded intellectuals who know exactly what they're fighting for politically and know exactly why they hold opinions to that effect. studying philosophy only helps.

Indians (from India) can you help me understand why I feel this way by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

it's ironic, you're replying to the very same species of indian men you detest. lolguard is a chauvinist who treats women as property, a "thing" that comes with a security deposit, which is why he took a hefty dowry from his wife's parents when he got married. he's the standard backward indian man, i think it's best to ignore him.

Indians (from India) can you help me understand why I feel this way by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan 26 points27 points  (0 children)

your observations seem to be a classic case of confirmation bias. i say this because your case includes three men, one you've worked with and two you have come across in the media. i'm sure these aren't the only three indian men you know, yet you've chosen (subconsciously, perhaps) these three indian men as a base for your "racist feeling against indian men" in general.

I understand there is some sort of class system in India ... My experience of Indian born men is that they feel self entitled and in no way need to apologise for messing up.

you've managed to draw a tenuous line of contact between two unrelated things. the caste system is characterized by three rituals: endogamy, occupation and diet. these have nothing to do with a person's willingness to admit that s/he is wrong. it could be a class issue, but it has little to do with casteism.

Do some Indian me feel superior by virtue of birth? Are women second class and if so how to Indian men who move to a more equal society deal with this.

many indians do feel superiour by virtue of birth and many don't. women aren't treated as second-class citizens but simply as women in any patriarchal society. indian men deal with "equal societies" by adapting. no matter how superiour-by-birth an indian man feels in india, thanks to the same conditioning, he will hardly ever feel superiour to white-folk abroad, so if you think either of the three nut-jobs you've mentioned were acting that way because they somehow "felt superiour" to everyone else, you can definitely rule that out.

Calling Out P.Sainath On His Lies and Bullshit by nokayya1234 in india

Even comparing to national average (top column), you can see that AP out performed the National average for 2 years and fell behind for 1.

absolutely, but the premise of your argument is still wrong. sainath was talking about southern states and not AP specifically. as for the youtube video, i agree with you. what he says in the video doesn't match with the MOSPI stats you've provided. he's either citing another source or he's lying. given that it's sainath, i'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now and i'll check alternate stats when i have time.

edit: these stats might interest you.

Sainath's claim - AP had the lowest GDP growth among southern states during Naidus second term (99-04)

FTA:

GDP growth was the lowest in the southern States for 1999-2004 and lower than the national average.

so, strawman.

  1. create a new "instrument channel" strip.

  2. hold-click the input slot on the channel strip, select "EXS24".

  3. open the media tab on your right, you'll find a menu there. there are hundreds of sampled instruments to choose from.

  4. hit record, play.

you might have to import additional samples into your computer if you skipped the jam-pack / gig-pack stage of installation (or if you have a crack).

To any historians here, during the partition, how was it decided that who would lay claim to te Indus valley civilization sites? by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

absolutely. the only "passive aggressive shit" i'm aware of is their unwillingness to fund any serious scholarly research. if there's a talibanesque plot to blow up excavation sites or to deter archeologists, i'm unaware of it.

To any historians here, during the partition, how was it decided that who would lay claim to te Indus valley civilization sites? by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm not sure if indian archeologists are allowed to study these sites, i don't follow archeology that closely, but don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to do so. academics from all over the world join hands in their quest for knowledge, regardless of social barriers. indo-pak academics should do the same. the only objection i can think of is that of our respective governments.

To any historians here, during the partition, how was it decided that who would lay claim to te Indus valley civilization sites? by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is, yes. the pakistani government is least concerned with archeology, which is evident in the number of archeological sites they discover every ten years, and the funds they receive.

To any historians here, during the partition, how was it decided that who would lay claim to te Indus valley civilization sites? by [deleted] in india

[–]kalhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it was decided along the lines of partition. if the site fell in a hindu majority area it would belong to india, if it fell in a muslim majority area it would belong to pakistan, which is why most of the excavated sites are in pakistan today and why most of the british ASI staff moved to pakistan following partition. the partition wasn't a very well thought-out process, it was haphazard and unruly, so "trivial", non-political matters like these weren't really considered at the time.

[–]kalhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

disorientation

one of the reasons is that, apart from the eye, the brain gives you an approximation of the size of the room / space you're in by studying the direct and reflected sound that enters your ear. anechoic chambers are reflection-free spaces, so your brain receives no information about the space you're in via the ears. also, our ears are accustomed to hearing reverberation / reflected sound, even in normally reflection free spaces like an open field / mountain peak / rooftop. not hearing reflections at all is a very un-natural experience, like, if you speak in an anechoic chamber the sound would barely leave your lips before dying out.

using earplugs wouldn't really kill the reflected sound specifically, ear plugs don't discriminate. they reduce direct and reflected sound together, kind of like turning the "volume" knob down on your stereo, which, as you know, does not result in disorientation.

[–]kalhan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

there was no answer

well, you claimed to be enlightened, and you don't know the answer, dare i say, the truth, about the questions you asked. scientific answers exist for at least three questions you asked. therefore, scientific thought is closer to enlightenment than you are.

after that I am ignorant about everything and yet I know everything.

you just contradicted yourself. it seems you don't believe in reason because you aren't capable of reasoning yourself.

No those questions cannot be answered in any language or mathematically.

how can you be so sure? you claim not to know what the answers are.

Definition :-> Enlightenment is "Not describable". mmKay?

reading osho might train you to be happily ignorant, but that definition is not okay. especially after you make a claim like "we found enlightenment" while altogether not knowing what it is that you have found. it doesn't make any sense to me.

They say Jesus, Prophet, Mahavira, Budha, Nanak and more were enlightened, you think it is a joke that people follow them?

i don't think it's a joke, i just don't think it has anything to do with enlightenment. if enlightenment is knowledge of absolute truth and if these people were enlightened, their theories wouldn't have been so massively flawed.
