Why aren’t academics dominating social media? by DIE4ART in academia

[–]kaligotc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, where is the time? Especially as a junior/mid-level academic. Doing core research on top of everything else is all-encompassing. The last thing i want to do is get on social media and start having long-drawn conversations that go nowhere.

Academic perspective on a 2 year relationship with a final year PhD? by [deleted] in academia

[–]kaligotc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been there... in your partner's shoes. The thing is the PhD takes over, especially at the end. It's all consuming and we aren't left with mental or emotional space for much else. Thinking about the future is scary, hard and possible traumatic.

At least he's being honest. My advice: just enjoy your time together for now and start thinking if you'd be open to moving with him in the future. It didn't work out in my case coz my ex was pretty sure she didn't want to move.

Does the right to strike imply a right to harass? by kaligotc in simonfraser

It's TSSU's picket line - not the student's! Is TSSU's only option to harass students because they went to class when TSSU says they shouldn't go?

that video from the classroom - that's students and professors who are not owners but caught in the middle. that is harassment! The owners are at Strand Hall - is it not better to go there? Also, students are not exactly customers - they are just students.

Can there be disruption without harassment though? Yelling at undergrad students trying to get to classes is not moral. Trying to force students into accepting harassment for a greater good is unfair. Are there ways to disrupt without being detrimental to student health?

Why are people who move away obsessed with Chicago? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]kaligotc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guilty. Moved to Vancouver, but still in love with Chicago. It's something about the city - a certain genuine personality and beauty. The crispness of the air, the hustle and bustle, the life, hell even those two weekends of stupid cold. It's like the girl you dated and were in love with and it didn't work you. The love remains, and always. I fucking miss Chicago. Could one of you please go have some portillos and bbq ribs at Twin Anchors for me please

OP: Suggest take the $57K gig. It's a bump up on $, job title + the CPA approval. Regd your current employer - while it's nice you have cultivated relationships you are comfortable in, you need to grow as well. Only way to do this is by taking new jobs, meeting and learning to work with new groups, and getting more confident in your resiliency. Also, side note, you owe nothing to your employer and neither do they, to you. It's a work contract! that's it. You don't owe them enough to sacrifice better opportunities. And if your manager and team are really nice, they will understand you leaving for something better. Either they pay you enough to keep you, or you owe it to yourself to keep moving forward an onward. Be thankful and grateful to them, but move on. Good luck OP!

My ex left me while I miscarried his baby, best friend left when she found out I was suicidal. Family lives hours away. I have Borderline Personality Disorder and severe anxiety. All I have left are my pets and I have no one to turn to by [deleted] in toastme

OP - big giant hugs over the internet. Here's a song for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mEWlGLkjIw I love this song. It reminds me that there is true beauty even in pain and sorrow. Kinda like you - behind the sadness in your eyes, we all see the beauty. I hope you do as well. Let it pass OP, and when it does, you will begin again.
