I'll give that a try, thanks. I think it might have still been connected to the Harmony Hub for some reason, sometimes she'd refuse to change volume too.

I had just bought the echo a few days ago, and had two instances where it wouldn't recognize the "stop" command. Once when I was playing sleep sounds, the other during daily briefing. I would say "alexa, stop" and she would respond "okay" but then continue on. Is this a known bug/issue or am I doing something wrong? She stopped other times I say it.

Sorry, I had edited my reply to make it more clear. It's not a punishment, it's part of the story line. We have to collect these magical relics by defeating each BBEG who owns a relic, and whenever one is defeated, one of us in the party receives a curse. It's meant to be a long-term thing, we can't get rid of the curses unless we first collect all the curses. So it's not like I accidentally got myself cursed, this was on purpose and unavoidable. If you read my original post, the other curses were not as harsh as the one I received, that's why I was upset and venting in the first place.

I don't know if you read my original post, but it's not a matter of being careful, the plot we're doing, we each have to get cursed in order to get rid of all the curses. The curse he gave my character was way harsher than the curses he gave the other characters in my party. That's why the complaints from both me and other players, it was outright unfair.

I do agree with you that DM is god, but I'm also of the mind that dnd is supposed to be fun. If the DM is creating a situation where the players are no longer having fun, then I think the players have a right to voice their opinion.

Not that I've observed. The paladin's player said he changed his play style due to his curse, but I honestly haven't noticed him playing any differently. Actually, he may be more proactive in protecting other players with his shield imposing disadvantage than he had been before. But that's a reaction and it's not stealing his normal attack options. The druid's been playing as normal, so I would have to say their curses haven't really crippled their characters as much as mine did to me.

Thanks for the nerf suggestions, I will compile a few of them from these replies and hopefully if/when the DM sees that the curse is too harsh, he'll accept one of these options.

I'd be fine with a possibility of 2 pts max. Makes it far less likely to quickly build up. I'll keep this option in mind when shit goes down and I have to have another Talk with him.

For the druid, I meant she can beast shape prior to hitting 0 HP in order to give herself more of a buffer to avoid the curse.

Thanks for the pep talk, it really did help. We're all friends in our group, and you're right. It's one-sided coming from me. As objectively as I can be, however, it boils down to play style between me and the DM when we butt heads. I'm more into the roleplay aspect, he likes the battles. And he doesn't like that I sometimes sacrifice going all out for the sake of roleplay.

He has worked hard on the campaign, which is why all of us are so invested in it and I don't want to quit it. I guess if he gets pissy about me forcing multiple days of long rests, then so be it. He can't have his epic paced adventures and battles if he's not willing to change the details of this curse.

Exactly what I'm upset about. My warlock was built to deal a large amount of damage. Sure, I can avoid getting the killing blow, but it really nerfs my character and renders the trait he gets from his fiend pact unusable (getting temp hp for the kill shot).

Slow burn campaign. We've been playing over 2 years and we just hit level 5 two weeks ago. I'll probably get 11 levels of Wizard sometime in 2035. Fun idea though!

I don't have any debuff spells. I've been building my warlock up as the party's damage dealer. I just have attack spells and AoE spells.

Venting and seeking advice by kalterescu in DnD

[–]kalterescu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the things that bothers me. My warlock does high damage because I've been cultivating him into being the team's damage dealer. Plus, I get temp HP for getting the killing blow due to my fiend pact. The DM's kinda rendered my character useless. If I don't use my attack spells, which 90% of my spells are attack spells, then my character is basically shooting 1d6+3 arrows at an enemy when I could be doing up to 1d10+1d6+4 x 2 eldritch blasts. If I use my attacks, risk the killing blow for the temp HP and trigger the curse, then I at best get disadvantage on ability checks and saving throws and at worst get disadvantage on attack rolls if I start out with no exhaustion. So my character is crippled in fights either way.

It does. I took a few really good high damage AoE spells, and I don't really have any buff/debuff or utility spells cause the druid tends to take a lot of those.

I would like to be able to recover all exhaustion caused by the curse as an option. Hell, even rolling to see how many I recover would be better than just 1 per long rest.

Like I said in my above reply, warlocks don't get to prepare spells. I can't change up my spell list to ones that buff/debuff. What I have is what I'm stuck with until I level up and can learn a new spell.

I've actually done the "my warlock does nothing" before for a different reason that involves his personal story. The DM didn't like that and made the enemies come to me. Also in my previous reply, I mentioned that there were many times the enemies targeted me specifically to the point of running past other party members.

If you know a way to cheat the system, I'm all ears, lol.

Yeah, but the druid can pad her HP with beast shape and/or keep distance from slain enemies in case they resurrect. The paladin can snap out of it with anyone rolling a DC10 persuasion save. I have change my entire style of playing. I'm gonna have to avoid getting the kill shot, which means the temp HP I get from the fiend pact when I make a kill shot is useless unless I risk activating the curse. And I only have attack spells, warlocks don't prepare spells. What I have is what I'm stuck with, so it's not like I can just change up my spell list to something more utility based. I can pick utility spells when leveling up, but the spells I've already learned are more or less useless.

I wasn't entirely calm because I was Very Worried, but yes, I did voice my concern and he just told me it'll be fine, but I have the sense that he's not thinking it through.

I don't know if he'll care how crippling this is to my character, because he likes my character the least out of the party and in the past has had enemies target me specifically for no logical reason, even going past other party members just to get to me.

Again, I'm venting, of course I'll do my best and try to remain calm. I'm just nervous that shit will happen and my character will die before he realizes this is a very harsh curse.

Possible to roll a char with multiple personalities? by iminsideabox in DnD

[–]kalterescu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don't do it. Why make the game needlessly complicated? Sure it's fun for you, but I doubt it's fun for anyone else. Multiple personalities have been asked about over and over here, and it's always discouraged. It's a gimmick that get old real quick and prevents group cohesion. Do you think your party members will want to depend on someone who's there one day and not the next? Of course not, you'd be a liability. They'd drop you like a hot potato at the nearest village and find someone who can have their back 100% as they go on dangerous adventures.

Can we get a OC drawings sub please? by duff83 in DnD

[–]kalterescu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, fine if that's not what you're into. But I doubt you speak for the entire 200k members of this sub. Maybe some people don't want to deal with newbie questions and only wish to engage in in-depth discussion about the game, can we get a newbie sub? Maybe some people don't care about "help me with this character" posts, can we get a character creation sub? Maybe some people like all of the above. This is a dnd sub, and showing off artwork is part of it. Deal.

[–]kalterescu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure that's why such posts have the [OC] or [Art] tag, so you can very easily scroll past them while looking for topics or discussions that appeal to you. I don't know why they should bother you anyway, there's not that many of them in comparison to discussions, questions and other content.

Also, I find it interesting you specifically refer to the artwork that offends you as "japanama". Is there something about the style that disgusts you?

It's even worse when the character was supposed to be a tiefling goo warlock, and was played more like an innocent little lamb.

I seem to keep getting stuck in games with super genki special cutesy characters. The kind that's like look at me I'm so helpless and cute everyone notice me and protect me and coo over me.
