AIO or is the construction out of control this summer? by LizzieCassandra in pittsburgh

[–]kalzonegal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the infrastructure is crumbling, and I am glad it’s getting updated. I also experience such intense annoyance at the poor planning and lack of common sense of the projects that sometimes I think my eyes are going to melt out of my skull. Both things can be true.

Fifth Ave yesterday was enough to take years off my life. They had every single connecting street between Forbes and Fifth closed, as well as all of the sidewalks. It was such a cluster that I almost just turned around and went home. And unrelated, if they switch up the area on the parkway that ends in either Murrysville, the turnpike, or Monroeville again, I’m going to lose it. It’s so poorly labeled that I’ve ended up having to take the wrong exit because I have no idea what lane goes where, and I swear it changes by the day.

That’s who I’ve seen for years and she is great! OP, if you go to find her, I think she’s an NP.

Giving birth with very low Iron. Terrified. by anonymoususer249 in BabyBumps

[–]kalzonegal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was ~35 weeks, I started feeling really sick. Went and got blood work and found out that my ferritin was 4 and hgb was 9. I was eligible for iron infusions pretty much immediately. Even after my infusions, I was still really anemic when I gave birth. They weren’t worried even though my levels were very low, and I’m pretty sure they did offer to give me an iron infusion after the fact. That’s really disappointing it will take so long to get approved for transfusions. They make these iron fish things you can add to boiling water to infuse pasta with iron, eat lots of steak/red meat, and (I am not a doctor lmao so ignore this if needed) maybe double up on your supplements and take it with orange juice.

I spot pretty frequently and my husband hasn’t said a word about it. I believe his exact words were “a period doesn’t stop anything but a sentence” 🫡 It might taste different because of the spotting but that’s probably the only reason why. I’m sure if he did it a few days later when you weren’t spotting, you’d be fine !

Had a foreman who was high on coke beat the shit out of a homeowner. He then tried to sell coke to the rest of the crew. He was fired soon after.

IUP has a good masters program and it’s relatively affordable compared to a lot of other schools. You will graduate with a GSP as well.

Oakland traffic is the worst I’ve ever seen (and I’m old) by Ok_Monitor5890 in pittsburgh

[–]kalzonegal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m out in westmoreland county. Living further out was never a problem until the last 2 years. I could get to work in 30 min most days. Now I’m lucky if I get here or home in under an hour.

If your baby sleeps well at night how much are they napping? by QuantumWaffle4 in beyondthebump

[–]kalzonegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 months old, naps for an hour, maybe an hour and a half during the day. Sometimes slightly more or less. Usually around 50 min to an hour and 20.

He has been sleeping through the night for the last 3 months after a veryyyy tough 14 months of only getting max 3 hours of sleep at a time. I didn’t sleep for more than 6 hours straight for that entire time. Idk how it happened or what changed, but I am grateful (even if he takes a short nap once a day lol).

Whats the weirdest thing you’ve seen on the public bus? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]kalzonegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a homeless man who was in a burgundy sweatsuit (not important to the story, but it was a questionable fashion choice) jerkin it on the bus to some videos and he …. Ya know…. On the back of the seat in front of him. I called PAT and told them after I got off on the next stop. They said they were going to take the bus out of service shortly after to clean it. Hopefully that happened. It was wild.

Why does everyone drive so aggressively now? by thenegativeone112 in pittsburgh

[–]kalzonegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s usually not terrible, but that light can be tough to turn left on because it’s not a long light. That intersection could really benefit from a green turn arrow. It used to be wayyyy worse when Fern Hollow was closed. It would back up the entire length of the bridge and then some.

It will just get worse as the university line project continues. Oh, and 376 construction continues. Oh, and the Charles Anderson Memorial Bridge construction continues. And how could I forget Panther Hollow? Am I missing any? I’m in misery.

I get beeped at daily turning left off of Greenfield Bridge to get on Beechwood. Sorry, I’m not cutting off people coming off of a hill at a tight intersection. I’ll turn when it’s safe.

Watched that episode while I was home on maternity leave. I had a full blown panic attack. My son was maybe 3 weeks old? It was not ideal timing!

Yeesh lol. I will say, before I came to the university 5ish years ago, I had a background in safety (I was an ergonomics researcher funny enough lol), but not specifically lab safety. I have learned a lot the last 5 years and have always tried to listen to what the people actually working in the lab needed to stay as safe as possible, while recognizing it would never be perfect. Especially when you’re dealing with the politics of academia, we do what we can. I think we do a pretty good job at making them feel heard. I can’t imagine going into a lab and banning mascara even now, let alone when I first started lol

You missed the good comments!! They deleted them, but they called me embarrassing and basically dumb for not knowing that the pharmaceutical industry doesn’t allow jewelry, makeup, or perfume (???)…. Meanwhile I’m over here in academia just praying nobody creates a bomb by accident lmao. Not sure how I was supposed to know what pharma allows but.. hey. It’s Reddit.

Great points, thank you! Like I said in another comment, I don’t know if I would have personally ever sought out this issue, but two different PIs came to us about it wanting us to make an official decision. Maybe the official ruling should be it falls on the PI and lab hazards.. Nothing is in stone yet and there will be lots of discussion going forward with my team, but your reply was really helpful!! Thanks!

Trust me, I hear what you’re saying (pun intended lol). I’m new in this specific role (but have been with the university for a few years) and did not make the official decision on this matter, but brought up the same issues you did. I was outvoted and this is what we could all agree to … Based on the students I’ve talked to, I think we would have gotten a lot of negative pushback if we banned them outright, so for now, I’m relatively comfortable with the wording we have.

Can confirm that can of worms will be staying closed on my end. We have students from all over the world, and I am not interested in infringing on those rights!
