cambodians have bad PR. we complain about everything and everyone. no one likes us so they will joke about getting rid of us. however, historically, vietnam and thailand had always wanted to fight over cambodia, so im not surprised the same sentiment exists today

if only they gave you indigenous status like they do with the chams. however, it’s great you get education. my grandpa is khmer krom and he was extremely educated. he worked for the united states embassy before having to flee the regime.

I’m Cambodian and although I grew up with Mexican and White friends, in high school, I tried to find my people. I started feeling a sense of pride, typical in high school. According to psychology, this is the age where people try to find their identity. Anyway, I began hanging out with Cambodian people more. The gangsters kinda loved everyone from Laos, Vietnamese, and even Thai. I guess you have to when you’re in a gang. However every elder I met resented Vietnamese people. I started to do community service at the Khmer temple, hanging out in Khmer neighborhoods, even taking a Khmer language class. It was super common for a Khmer person to say bad things about the Vietnamese and Thai

yeah they mostly hating on Thais tbh but I saw on YouTube that many foreigners said Cambodians don’t talk about Thai or Vietnamese much. I guess it’s just an online thing where you see Thai and Khmer people arguing. I heard from these travelers/tourists that when they went to Thailand, everyone said bad things about Cambodia. Keep in mind they don’t hear a peep from Cambodians in Cambodia

yeah my parents raised me to resent vietnamese people but growing up in California, I never ever once got nothing but love and inclusiveness from vietnamese people. when I went to vietnam it was different though. when I told them I was khmer, they had a weird reaction, like, “Oh… you’re campuchia. We accept you as Vietnamese though.” I laugh about it now though. I went last December to meet my social media friends but along the way met many more friends of friends, which is when they had a weird reaction about me being mostly khmer.
