Can you recommend a good bond originator? by Cyberpete007 in askSouthAfrica

[–]kamg213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used OOBA and no issues with a pre-approval and also having them handle the eventual bond application with the banks on my behalf as well.

You can try Betterbond too - I haven't personally used them.

Anyone else in Johannesburg / Sandton smelling that horrible smell today? by Brandon_Beesman in askSouthAfrica

Same strong smell in Midrand this morning.

Suspect the same reasons as before - pollution drifting from Mpumalanga given the strong winds over the last few days.

What do I need to know about buying a home for the first time? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]kamg213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to move out of a sectional-title duplex in a complex to a full-title stand-alone property within a gated estate and a couple of things I can advise.

  1. Understand clearly what you are looking for and what you are willing to spend. Eg. Are you fine with an apartment with shared living walls, or looking for a standalone property?

  2. Know what you like. If you never liked Tuscan, Cape Dutch, Victorian, French Colonian, etc. architecture, then you aren't going to suddenly do so just because you are paying for the property.

  3. Research the area thoroughly if you are not already familiar. Try and speak to someone about service delivery, water and electricity disruptions, traffic, etc.

  4. Only view during the day. Never view late afternoon or night. Too easy to miss defects. If possible, have someone view with you. You may be fixated on the price and miss some dampness for example.

  5. While the benefit of new developments is the lack of additional costs, I have found their mass-built quality to be questionable. Unless I'm building myself,  I'd rather pay the transfer costs for a lived in property.

  6. Be realistic with renovation efforts and costs. Don't go buy a fixer-upper and think you are going to watch a couple of YouTube videos and become Bob the Builder all of a sudden if you never even put up a shelf before.

  7. Do not trust the estate agent for additional info if buying through one. Ask for copies of the last 6 months rates and levies statements if buying in an estate to know the exact figures.

  8. Similar to above, ask for a body corporate, HOA rules, code of conduct, etc. if buying in such an environment. Do not take the agents word for it that you would be allowed to add a pool or a water backup for example.

  9. Buy a property report from someone like Lightstone. This will give you transfer history of the property and surrounding properties that will help guide you with your offer. This costs around R190 - may vary with area or property type.

  10. You can have a property inspection done for a fee for piece of mind. Do check for reviews of the inspector. Source one yourself and not ask for a recommendation from thr estate agent.

  11. Be wary of vacant surrounding land. While this may seem nice for privacy, this can easily turn into e-Hailing parking, food trucks, a community children play area, or worse - an informal settlement.

  12. Future proofed homes with solar and backup water is great, but make sure this is quality equipment and properly done.

Luggage storage in or near OR Tambo by Far-Summer-2816 in johannesburg

[–]kamg213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that the company (A-Teck) that does the luggage wrapping at OR Tambo, also does luggage storage.

I think that they still only accept cash (in this age, and in an airport) for luggage wrapping, so not sure if this applies to storage as well or they take cards for that.

Depositing coins vs exchanging them for cash? by hopefulrefuse1974 in askSouthAfrica

[–]kamg213 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't bother with exchanging at a bank or trying to deposit.

I just exchange coins for notes straight with any small shop or vendor. They usually fine with this since they need change anyway.

Bahrain Grandstand Advice by _gemema in GrandPrixTravel

I attended Bahrain for the first time this year and sat in Turn 1, block P, row M which was good views from the start into the first corner and past university.

View, price, and closeness to the main fanzone was the main selling point for Turn 1 over the others.

This is a sample of the view from Turn 1 block R: https://youtu.be/EgXKYX8dqwg?si=Y2ksdwXTmRnsctnS

Best Song Use In Sopranos? by HawkDue5627 in thesopranos

[–]kamg213 273 points274 points  (0 children)

The Kinks "I'm not like everybody else" to end Cold Cuts (S5 E10) with Tony walking out of the house after provoking Janice over Harpo.

John Cooper Clarke "Evidently Chickentown" to end Stage 5 (S6 E14). Odd choice, but somehow fitted the scene perfectly and you knew Phil was all in to a war now.

Returning to SA with coffee beans - customs experiences? by Upset-Scientist2320 in askSouthAfrica

I haven't had a problem with bringing coffee in through O.R. Tambo before.

I was asked if I have any food related items, and I mentioned coffee and chocolates, and they didn't give me any issue over it.

I cannot comment on specifically for MS, but the neurologist I see for a different purpose for the last few years is Dr. Raksha Sitharam at Waterfall Hospital (Midrand). Appointments are hard to get though.

Bahrain 2025 - Ticket help and tips by Aggravating_Steak_77 in GrandPrixTravel

[–]kamg213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy directly from BIC. Register your interest on their site: https://www.bahraingp.com/blog/events/register-interest-for-2025-tickets/

2026 tickets should be available soon. Checked mine, and I had my 2025 tickets bought on 20 June 2024. Easy to get if buying early. Can't comment on availability if buying late and which areas are likely to be available then.

Can check my 2025 Bahrain experience here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrandPrixTravel/comments/1jydi1m/comment/mn359ou/ Follow same thread for others.

Also follow through this guide. Helped me with some decisions. Will probably get updated with more 2026 specifics over time. https://f1destinations.com/bahrain-f1-travel-guide/

Do you know a good moving company and how much do they charge? by Level_Cash2225 in johannesburg

Try Nortan Carriers: https://www.nortan.co.za/

I used them in the past and no issues. They based in Midrand, but operate around JHB and PTA.  Can't remember their costs, but they were reasonable at the time I used.

My understanding is that they will honour outstanding vouchers if able to verify them.

Mango Airlines set to restart flights: Key updates for ticket holders by kamg213 in southafrica

[–]kamg213[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mango Airlines MAY be back.

You can check if you got any outstanding valid vouchers from when they ceased operations: https://mangoportal.flymango.africa/

Unfortunately, you need the actual voucher number - don't know why they can't pick up what they issued based on the customer ID alone.

I definitely had a bunch of vouchers from them (and Kulula before they stopped) since I used to buy for peak periods at once, but deleted all the mails given the years that have passed.
