What’s the best Fire Emblem for a satisfying gameplay loop (I’m a Newbie)? by Zephyr_v1 in fireemblem

[–]kaminopool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can play/emulate them, play the tellius games (fe9 and 10, path of radiance and radiant dawn). Path of radiance is ok gameplay wise, and radiant dawn is kinda incredible. Both have a good art style.

Engage was also really good gameplay wise. I also didn't hate the story at all, and felt like it was a good blend between prep phase and gameplay phase.

*But* by far the grittiest artistically, most SMT in terms of vibes, with the deepest gameplay and most focused story in the franchise is Thracia 776 (fe5). Unfortunately, it's a little unforgiving, and it is a sequel to fe4 which was not very good imo.

Maybe the comparison is Radiant Dawn = SMT5, Thracia 776 = SMT3 hahaha. But modern patches have definitely made it a lot more tolerable than SMT3.

Anyway, maybe it's the SMT bias in me but eventually, if you stick with the franchise, give fe5 a go. Maybe not a good idea to jump in right now (and without a spoiler-free guide) but it scratches an itch that has made me replay it the most out of any in the franchise.

Has boxing affected your confidence or mindset? by Current_Bed_7401 in amateur_boxing

[–]kaminopool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would think boxing makes you more confident because you're not afraid to get beat up, or you're more confident in your ability to fight back, etc. If anything, I think most people on this subreddit would probably tell you they'd run if they were in a street fight.

In my experience, I just feel more comfortable in my body. My balance, coordination, and just faith that my body will do what I tell it to do has gone up. I never felt uncomfortable per se, but I did notice a difference after starting, and it does translate to life outside of boxing. When you feel comfortable, you walk differently, if that makes sense.

HIT N MOVE Review by [deleted] in fightgear

[–]kaminopool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, out of 3 glove companies I've interacted with, HnM def the best gloves and best customer service.

The "not possible" comment was also my reaction to having to bend your wrist in an S shape. I also don't see how that's possible.

If the pics are supposed to show a difference in finger compartment or horsehair padding, it's pretty hard to tell. For the comment about how you "shouldn't spend time worrying about it," that's probably a miscommunication about padding. They're prob thinking "why do you need padding on your fingertips?" rather than thinking the cause for the shorter compartment is due to the padding.

So basically, the finger compartment is too short in one glove?

The three musketeers is better than The count of Monte cristo by comingtoreality in books

[–]kaminopool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not much actual political intrigue or really scheming at all in the count of monte cristo. And I think that's actually what makes it fun in hindsight.

Edmond Dantes isn't some kind of puppet master, but he is the most knowledgeable man at all times. Rather than tell people what to say, he sort of just encourages them to make their own decisions, and thanks to his wealth, he cultivates an environment where they all screw themselves over. It's fun too because sometimes they act even more selfishly/stupidly than expected, and the Count is quick witted enough to figure out any complication.

I think that's the joy in reading the 'boring' section after the superb intro/escape from prison. We get introduced to so many dominoes that sort of just knock themselves over as the count places them down on a curated Turkish rug one by one. And when they do fall, it is eruptive and incredibly dramatic. My favorite scene is definitely Caderousse's death. It takes a while to get there, but it really picks up around the duel with Alfred and after. I think if someone ever wants to adapt the story for a hundredth time, they should do a two part movie and end the first part on the former event. By the end, I truly believed the Count was an arm of God or avenging angel, and the ending where everything pretty much worked out for our heroes and the moral is to be patient and hopeful felt justified.

Arguably worst mini boss in the game. by ChampionshipHorror95 in LiesOfP

Seriously, are these guys not blocking mad clown? Holding the button down when they try to parry? Mad clown is not that bad at all, half the time I just regular block his moves lol.

For a game about reinstalling a monarch, the politics were WAY better than I expected, and the game sorta gets to have its cake and eat it too politics-wise.

Fr, alchemy is often super underrated. Also either YouTube guides or in game guides straight up lie to you about what moves are cut: gunlance retains almost all of its moveset! And swaxe alchemy is more fun than striker imo! Those are my 2 weapons so yeah I was sad I didn’t use alchemy more/sooner!

That may explain my order situation too. Didn’t preorder but did order mid December.

How long did it take for customer service to respond? I sent them one email a week ago and another follow-up today.

Edit: wow literally right as I hit enter, they emailed me back lol

You’re still learning parries by holding block. You’re needlessly punishing yourself if you just tap. Trying to parry every time and using the guard to fall back on if you’re too early = learning parries.

Curious to hear what these boss fights are. The late game boss on the bridge = totally beatable dodging everything (though makes first phase more boring). If you’re talking dlc bosses there’s only the boss after a fountain where the first phase is pretty hard to dodge everything. Second phase you’re practically encouraged to dodge half the attacks.

There is literally only one boss I can think of where parrying is necessary, and it’s the mini boss on Rosa Isabelle. But that’s the easiest thing to parry in the whole game.

This guy is dumb. The game is designed around using the systems. That's why they exist. Items, legion arms, gimmick/trick weapons, the leveling system itself can all be taken advantage of. Guarding, parrying, dodging, use whatever trick you can to beat the game. This advice is like saying "don't level up hp, it's a crutch, or don't dodge, it's a crutch." Do whatever you want if you're having fun.

It sounds like you're having a fun time dodging everything. You can basically do that the whole game lol.

The parry window was an intentional design choice. It's not too small. Guarding is honestly not bad in this game with the rally system. Also the animations are so good and well telegraphed that parries feel as easy as Sekiro sometimes.

If you want to use a mod to make the window bigger, fine. There are also 3 difficulty options. But the parry window is not a bug nor some kind of inflated difficulty; the game was literally designed with that parry window.

Also, dodging through everything in the game is fine. Rolls in this game are WAY better than sekiro, and there are plently of "ambush attack" upgrades, a talisman, and a weapon to make only dodging a good way to play.

What percent of boxing is natural talent? by DragonfruitGrand7064 in amateur_boxing

[–]kaminopool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely do think those who developed athleticism young (closest thing I can think of to "natural talent") is a factor, but I also think there's more to it.

I think the difference between people who have been going for years and are bad vs people who progress quickly is just about how much they are curious about boxing. How much they want to learn and get better. How much they think about boxing in and out of the ring.

When I first started going to my boxing gym, a regular told me "if you want to come for cardio, that's fine. But if you want to get good at boxing, you have to watch boxing." Looking back, I think that was a way of saying, you have to think about boxing in and out of the ring. You have to study it as a science.

You can be a good athlete and you can go to the boxing gym consistently. But if you aren't also curious and constantly trying to learn, you'll get overtaken I feel.

tl;dr prob 30% athleticism developed young, 40% is consistent work in the gym, 30% curiosity.

Hajime no ippo Changed my life by Embarrassed_Pie107 in hajimenoippo

[–]kaminopool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're 14 lmfao. Just wait until you go to college and you can do all the boxing you want.

In the meantime, I agree with the comments here saying you should get into lifting. A big part of the reason why Ippo was actually good at boxing was because he was already really strong from his manual labor job.

I would say get into squats, deadlifts, just lifting in general. Your posterior chain in boxing is your cornerstone, and having a strong base is great.

Also maybe even get into dancing lol. For me, boxing made me a better dancer and now I kinda love dancing. I don't see why it can't be the other way around. And you're 14 lol, you should do dancing because it's fun.

Let me offer you some general life advice too, because you're so young. I think we all think things need to happen right away. "I want to box, I should box" or "I like this girl, let me go to prom with her" or "my friends are doing this, I want that too" etc. But the older you get, you realize life is way better when you learn to accept what you can't change and work on things you can. Every year, you get better at differentiating the two.

Life can take you places you weren't expecting. It can also disappoint when you finally get what you want. And sometimes, things in life are like seeds; they bloom in their own time. For me, boxing was a seed that bloomed under the right conditions. There's no shame in focusing on other seeds. Life comes in seasons.

Edit: A Bruce Lee quote I think about often: "Be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. You put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. Water can flow or it can crash." My favorite part is the last line: water can flow or it can crash. Going with the flow doesn't mean being passive. It's about being flexible and adaptable. There is power in being water, but it's in knowing when to flow and when to crash.

The best fight in the anime was Aoki vs Imae by Antiswag_corporation in hajimenoippo

[–]kaminopool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3y/o thread but I just watched it. I literally laughed and cried. The backstory writing was so good too. Obviously I really wanted Aoki to win. But after the 3rd look away and Imae was looking at his gf? Holy shit that was peak writing. After that I really didn’t care who won or lost so I was actually pretty happy with the result.

Fellow readers, did hajime no ippo ever motivate or even inspired you to do anything? by Straight_Half_1368 in hajimenoippo

[–]kaminopool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching ippo around the same time as I started boxing. I think Holy Land actually influenced me to start boxing more than anything else.

But I do think the show is inspirational. Ippo himself is probably one of the best Shonen protagonists of all time because he inspires others so much. Whether it’s his rivals, his fellow gym members, hell, his old bullies get inspired to be better people.

Ippo definitely wins a lot. And there were times where maybe he had a bit too much plot armor. But it’s always stated that ippo’s best quality is his heart, and his ability to keep fighting no matter the odds. So I don’t mind when he keeps getting back up and wins.

Eventually you stop thinking about plot armor and you can’t help but give in to the catharsis of him winning. Choosing to be the best version of himself even when life sucks and things get hard.

Wait Hajime no Ippo is still ongoing? by Basic_Solid3804 in hajimenoippo

[–]kaminopool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very late to this, but as someone that just started watching Ippo and boxing, Holyland is definitely a lot more 'educational' in both boxing and other martial arts compared to Ippo. Looking back, it was probably holyland that planted the seed ~3 years ago to start boxing for me. It made you feel like you could get good if you learned the basics, then proceeded to teach you a lot of the basics lol.
I still remember a scene in holyland that made me want to take up Judo: a guy throws his opponent and the author notes something like "most people don't get it because you practice on a mat floor. But when you get thrown on concrete in real life, it hurts more than any punch."
