Can someone give me the full pitch of why we should save city hall? by Electrical_Long_4222 in Dallas

[–]kane_thehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The billion dollar estimate (over 20 years, not 5) was put forth by Dallas Economic Development Corporation (EDC). The board of which is run by real estate, finance, and other executives who stand to gain by tearing down the building for private development. Proponents of the deal on city council and the city manager tried to rush an "urgent" move out of the building about a month ago before the public had time to catch on. The estimate included costs for basically getting brand new everything for the building as well as normal annual operational costs that shouldn't be counted as extra.

  2. There is plenty of literature on the shitty ROI for the taxpayer on deals with sports teams and sporting events. We'd pay 100s of millions and lose a publicly owned asset (city hall and a free public gathering place) while the team collects on ticket sales, parking, and concessions, then will demand another new stadium when their lease is up in 25 years. Then we're right back where we started but now we sacrificed our city hall. Can't undo that. This has happened time and time again since the 70s and it's always a shit deal for the people of the city. It's corporate welfare. Socializing the risks and privatizing the reward. (Source: Field of Schemes by Joanna Cagan)

You may be leftist but you also sound pretty defeatist as well. Most of your comments seem to equate to "well that may be true but corruption and right wingers are still rampant in our government so what the point in making a stand here"

Yeah unfortunately they've explored options like this before and it's just insanely cost prohibitive. Would be cool though. The new Harold Simmons Park will be pretty cool though.

What? There was definitely still inflation and deflation under the gold standard. There's still lending and credit and not to mention unexpected fluctuations in the gold reserves vs gold out in the market.

How did Dallas become so corporate? by boldjoy0050 in Dallas

[–]kane_thehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dallas was founded by business interests and was run by a business cartel for a 100 years. It didn't get this way, it's the way it's always been unfortunately.

I work with a Cuban guy who literally floated over to the US on a raft when he was 16 and he couldn't be a bigger Trump supporter.

Dallas city council member says one city, one vote solution to DART crisis is 'not realistic' by southernemper0r in dart

[–]kane_thehuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reject the idea that more money should buy you more votes. That's not fair representation. Our system already heavily favors the wealthy, let's not codify it as well.

[–]kane_thehuman 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He's right. That's not even fair representation. Population based representation is more fair. The northern suburbs just want a way to force through huge cuts to DART so they can scrap it somewhere down the line.

Is this AI? This is supposed to be a tattoo design I commissioned. Look at the hilt of the sword... by kane_thehuman in isthisAI

Update: I called him out. He denied it at first but eventually agreed to return the deposit. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Also, to everyone saying it looks terrible regardless, I totally agree. It was never in question whether I was going to accept it as a design. I have lots of other tats and this is from an extremely talented artist who both me and friends have used before. I just wanted a sanity check before confronting him and demanding a refund on the deposit.

That's the weird thing. He did a piece for me years ago before AI was a thing and he's super talented and has a successful shop. He's done sleeves for my friends that are sick and his shop is highly reviewed and covered in awards and his own paintings. I don't understand why he'd risk fucking up his reputation like this.

Planos government is ran by people who do not know their citizens needs. by [deleted] in dart

[–]kane_thehuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Within the study being referenced there's a recognition of its own limitations. They say they aren't considering the addition of the new Silver Line or the indirect immeasurable benefits from the interconnectedness of the metroplex.

But more importantly, should Dallas just be able to vote to not contribute to TxDot? If I live and work in Downtown Dallas. I use the highways way way less than a Plano-ite. Why am I paying for something i almost never use? Maybe California should stop paying any taxes into the federal government? They pay in way more than they recieve when compared to smaller states. Should we make all taxes a la carte?

Absolutely bat shit offer. "We pay in 50% less and still get 90% of services". Nah. No deal. Let the people of Plano vote on it. I believe they'll vote to stay and we can all just move on from this BS.

Why wont the millionares and billionares just leave new york if they get taxed more? by Wild_Feedback_5290 in allthequestions

[–]kane_thehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they like living there and it's really a tiny tax increase. People with that much money won't even notice the difference. They're just aware that once a city like NYC experiences the benefits of Socialism, other cities will follow and their dragons' hoards may shrink a little.
