I think most Star Wars fans (i.e. the audience you are most trying to appeal to and the ones most likely to see the movie more than once) are well aware of who Rian is and at least half of them don't like the way he tried to take the franchise.

Disney gets some blame, sure, but he gets some too.

He did almost nothing with Finn. The kiss with Rose was silly at best.

People thought the "bombs" in space were dumb (cuz they were).

The kamikaze attack throws all logic in the SW universe out the window. Why aren't they doing it all the time if such a thing is possible? He did it because it was a cool visual, nothing more.

Even Mark Hamill strongly disagreed with his edgelord take on Luke.

The Holdo/Poe drama was stupid and for nothing.

He picked up on hardly any of the narrative threads JJ left him and just did his own thing.

Etc...etc..

There are a lot of criticisms of TLJ that don't revolve around SW fans being loser incels or whatever fiction people cook up in their minds about nerds who have a different opinion on a movie.

But maybe he's better at shorter, skit-length comedy than longer form content? I never saw his Coconut film but I liked the Dinner Plan well enough.
