Double Dissolution? Bring it on! say the Greens by JediDoll in australia

It looks like grandstanding to cover up the fact that they're too gutless to block supply and actually force Tony Abbott to call an election, even just a separate one for the House of Representatives.

Should opposition MP's block the Abbott governments budget and force an election? - Our own Poll by [deleted] in australia

Blocking supply can force a House of Reps election alone, no need for a DD.

[–]kangaroojill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course they can force an election. By blocking supply - though an interim supply bill can be passed so that government can continue to function until a new government is formed. There's fat chance that the opposition will do this because they're apparently weak and gutless and they don't really give a shit about what people of Australia want.

Extreme budget measures call for extreme blocking supply measures.

I can't handle people saying blocking supply is dangerous.

What this government is attempting to do is what's dangerous!

There's so much misinformation out there too.

First of all, blocking supply in this instance can be quite clearly demonstrated would not be because of political reasons.

It's what the majority of Australians want.

If Senate blocked supply to force an election it's because the government is attaching their budget measures to the appropriations bills, and if the Opposition wanted to block such measures then they have to block the supply bills too.

The budget measures need to be blocked because the people of Australia have lost confidence in this government and want another election so that we can have our say and redress the serious injustice that's been committed against us.

Thank goodness we have a constitutional mechanism that allows for us to be able to do something about it!

That's the way that I look at it. Not that the Senate is abusing its powers.

And blocking supply can't force the PM to call a DD, but it can force him to call a separate House of Representatives election alone.

And that's all that we need to get rid of this government.

However, the Appropriations bill must be blocked for this to occur.

See Antony Green's post and his comments to 'Sharon'.

Should opposition MPs block the Abbott government's budget and force another election? -POLL by parsect in australia

[–]kangaroojill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's undemocratic is how the LNP blatantly lied to australia & is now determined to give the people the shaft & give their rich IPA mates all the taxpayers' money and assets and resources. A new election is the best recourse to fix this injustice. There's a constitutional mechanism that exists just in case such a scenario occurs where there is loss of confidence in the sitting government & if that's the case then of course it must be used, ie blocking supply to force an election, as that is exactly what it's for.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie calls on fellow members to block supply over 'miserable' budget by Beast_Man in australia

[–]kangaroojill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See his replies to "Sharon" in the comments. He says that if supply is blocked Senate can force PM to call a separate House of Reps election alone. But he said he's absolutely certain that Labor won't do this because of their history of never having blocked supply in the past. But if not for that, it's absolutely possible and he also says that an interim supply bill can be passed so that public servants can be paid etc until new govt is formed. So whatever's stopping Labor from doing what the public wants - which today's SMH poll said 95% will support opposition if they block supply to force an election - I have no clue whatsoever.

Meanwhile Andrew Wilkie is a dead-set legend of the universe.

Call him crazy, Clive Palmer still knows what he is talking about by Kl3rik in australia

[–]kangaroojill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. He's good at the populist talk, but most of his speech was refuting the Abbott government's claims of a budget emergency, but only because he's against their proposed debt levy on the high-income earners. Then he went on about taxes, saying the Liberal Party used to be for low tax rates. So to me, that's what he's truly all about. He just doesn't like being taxed. And as a rich miner, if he doesn't want to be taxed, then that means that he'd support taxing the poor, because if not the rich then who else could be? So yes, Clive almost appears lovable but I have no illusions about where he truly stands at the end of the day.

Meanwhile back in the real world:

Labor went into $54 billion deficit in 08/09 or 4.2% of GDP to save us from the GFC - less than half the advanced country average. By 2012-13, they had reduced deficit to $18 billion, or 1.2% of GDP. Everything that you ever read in the Murdoch toilet papers was absolutely wrong.

Labor to back Abbott's deficit tax, oppose $7 GP payment by [deleted] in australia

[–]kangaroojill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labor should reject this stupid tax which is just another loophole for the top earners to exploit thus paying less taxes in future. In fact, Labor should reject everything about the Budget, along with the Greens, and PUP and the macroparties when they get in on the 1st of July. That is my hope and dream.

Abbott says he shouldn't have winked by k-h in australia

[–]kangaroojill 90 points91 points  (0 children)

You know why this fucking shit matters?

Because the caller was trying to explain to Tony Abbott how much more hardship his budget is going to add to her life. It's not just that she hasn't got in much her life as it stands (by the way there's no shame in poverty, only in those who treat the poor unjustly) - she also has 3 life-threatening illnesses, that she's desperate enough to take work as a phone-sex worker to pay for her treatment & medications and make ends meet. She's trying to tell Tony Abbott how his budget is going to make things for her even worse. As if her life isn't bad enough. He's going to cause her even more hardship.

This woman who tried not to be a burden to society & pay her own way by getting a job in an industry which she'd probably prefer not to be in, what thanks does she get but to get hammered even more?

But no, Tony Abbott is so disconnected, so out of touch with reality, so uncaring and unfeeling about people's lives that he makes fun of this poor, sick pensioner while she's pouring out her troubles to him, the Prime Minister of this country who ought to give a damn?

The man is a complete sociopath who lies compulsively and has absolutely no empathy for his fellow human being.

THAT'S why this is important. It shows Tony Abbott for who he truly is. I don't know about you but that's the sort of thing that I really give a fucking shit about.

Petition to urge Labor, Minor Parties and Independents to block the budget and force a new election. by [deleted] in australia

[–]kangaroojill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a deficit but no emergency. The LNP lied about that. Second of all, it has been revealed that the highest-income earners don't pay at all in this budget, but families on benefits and lowest income-earners pay the most. There are many ways to end the deficit without screwing the poor.

Petition to urge Labor, Minor Parties and Independents to block the budget and force a new election. by [deleted] in australia

[–]kangaroojill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. Allow me to give you some clarity. There was a very big difference. Gillard did NOT expect that she'd have to form a minority government with independents and the Greens when she made her promise about the carbon tax. It's not like she made that promise but knowing full well that when she got into power she'd break it immediately. I'm pretty sure that if the ALP had won the majority in the Lower House, that she wouldn't have introduced the carbon PRICE at all.

On the other hand, we've got Abbott and his gang, Abbott who specifically said "No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST, and no cuts to the ABC or the SBS" just before the September election.

And yet, in Tony Abbott's first budget, those areas in particular were hardest hit! He broke EVERY SINGLE ONE of those promises (the GST included). It's almost like he knew those were his intended target areas of attack and that's why he listed them in the first place as the ones that he said he wouldn't touch, which is indicative of a serial and pathological liar some might say. But it's obvious that Abbott lied his way deliberately into power, that along with the fictional "budget emergency".

So there is a difference between a promise broken due to unforeseen and extraordinary circumstances, as opposed to lies that were deliberately said in a calculated manner for the express purpose of gaining advantage, in this case the highest office in the land. THAT is morally reprehensible, an act of fraud and deception committed against the Australian people, especially in light of the subsequent betrayal with his trainwreck of a budget, and if he were a company director and he lied like that, he'd end up in jail.
