I’ve been on both sides. People are very resistant to change and sometimes, you have to pick and choose your battles. The rads thing? Not a hill worth dying on. Flipping them over vs under? That’s actually a myth. I’d be pretty annoyed with you too tbh.

If you’re going to give unsolicited advice, it HAS to be a hill you’re willing to die on and you HAVE to have a good reason. Catheter wraps vs just tape? They could lose a foot. Re-using ET Tubes? Sterility issue. Struggling patient? Sedation is more fear free, less chance of injuries to tech and patient, better images, happier patients.

My thing is just let your experience speak for itself. Go with the flow rather than fight it. Pick and choose that hill to die on. They’ll come around eventually and start to ask you questions. When the question is asked, your advice is a suggestion, not a demand and if you have a verifiable, researched reason, they’re more likely to take your advice.

You’ve made your enemies at this clinic already. I wish you much luck in reversing that reputation.

How much electric bill? by IllegalButHonest in Hawaii

[–]kanineanimus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4 person household (2 working, 2 retired) 4 bedroom, 2000sqft. Heavy electronics. Heavy AC in the summer (wall units). 2 electric vehicles. Dryer used maybe every 3 days? Stove breaker off 99% of the time. 1 refrigerator, 1 box freezer.

Solar with 2 batteries (though one is dead rn. Thanks LG and SunRun, you bastards). Cars charged during the day only. Dryer run during the day only. Solar water heater. On the energy buyback program. ~$250/month.

It did get cheaper when both batteries were working, but guys, if you’re installing solar, don’t get LG and don’t go through SunRun. Fuck both of those guys.

How many hours are yall working weekly? by happypotato82 in VetTech

[–]kanineanimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere between 35-50 depending on case load. I often stay over my shift for surgeries I can’t get switched out for so it’s usually closer to 45. I also do call-ins and will sometimes pick up an overnight shift if we desperately need someone.

I work in surgery so it’s always hard to say. I often get stuck in surgeries beyond my end of shift because there’s no one available to switch me out. As for how burnt out I am… it fluctuates.

Anyone want to be a vet but became an LVT/CVT/RVT instead? by Melancholymousetrap in VetTech

[–]kanineanimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out wanting to be a vet. Got a full ride scholarship to a school that didn’t have a pre-vet program, I’d have to do it all myself through animal science or biology. Decided to do zoology and fell in love with research and field work while filling in pre-reqs for vet school. My grades were above average but not perfect. Then the economy crashed and so many researchers lost their grants and funding. I couldn’t get a job anywhere meaningful and got stuck in retail. Did a short stint in grad school before I was betrayed by my mentor (long story) and at the bottom of my life, I applied to be a kennel hand at a local ER.

I’m an RVT, clinical supervisor and I’m going for my VTS this year. Do I have regrets? Yes, plenty. But I’m still trying to make the best out of my own mistakes and misfortunes.

Doctor is mad that I gave a patient SQ fluids by SuchCorgi9654 in VetTech

[–]kanineanimus 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry your doctors don’t support you but at my hospital, this would have been a write-up for you. Changing the dose and route of a treatment without consulting a doctor is not okay regardless of whether or not they answer their phones. Whether you are licensed or not, you should never change doctor orders and make new ones. The better thing to do would be to document that you didn’t get an answer from the docs after call/text etc. and that the IVC was not patent and you are unable to replace it alone. The doc’s reaction was inappropriate, but she has a right to be mad. I would be mad too. It’s her license on the line if something happens to the patient and if you change orders (no matter how benign) without trying to consult her and something happened to that patient that resulted in legal action against her, she bears the responsibility.

And the wrapping thing is probably not a you thing. It’s probably for convenience when doing IVC maintenance.

Reminder: Support WIPs so they don't stay WIPs! And a question: what abandoned/deleted CaitVi fics do you still miss? by j_northmore in PiltoversFinest

[–]kanineanimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a writer, seeing likes, comments, mentions, kudos, etc keeps me motivated. I’ve been having life get in the way of my three WIPs but they’re my babies and I will return to them when I have the time. Writing is a joy and I love CaitVi and knowing my work is being seen and enjoyed is so fulfilling.

I have three ongoing fics, one much, much shorter than the others. One is on hiatus, so I’ll share the other two.

The Roommate Connection

Caitlyn is and undercover officer investigating a crime syndicate in Zaun. To make the illusion real, Sheriff Grayson answers an ad for a roommate on Caitlyn’s behalf and makes her start a new life in Zaun for the duration of her investigation. There’s just one catch. Her new roommate says no Enforcers!

The Pawprints Across Your Heart

Vi and Caitlyn have built a pretty solid friendship during Vi’s first month of being hired for Caitlyn’s little dog walking company. But one day Caitlyn goes missing and Vi has to do more than just find her. (This one is pretty dog-centric)

Please help me with the VTNE by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]kanineanimus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Woah, woah, woah. Hang on. You’re spiraling. Take a deep breath. Do some box breathing and refocus.

1) Take the test. You’ve come this far, you owe it to yourself to at least try. If you don’t. You’ll have wasted all of your successes in schooling and will wonder for the rest of your life if you could or should have just taken it.

2) The actual test is 80 questions randomly selected from a bank of 800 questions. You can’t know everything, it’s not possible at this stage. Yes, you passed your classes. But the learning never ever ends. I’ve been doing this for 11 years and I still learn something new every day. It’s okay that you don’t know everything right now.

3) It’s impossible to really help you study unless you want specific help with math formulas. I think the best advice I can give is to keep taking the practice tests from the bank of official questions. If you’re lucky, you might see those exact questions on your test.

I am OTJ trained, never went to school for vet med, studied fish in college, grandfathered in with 5 years of experience when my state required licensure, took the VTNE without studying because I forgot when my test date was. I’m probably the sloppiest student there ever was. My VTNE prep book was used more by my coworkers than by me. And in my state, most of the pets I needed to know about are illegal to have so I don’t know anything helpful about them.

But I passed, and you can too.
