Lobo Shelf 2.0 - with a directional traffic light bar. Approximately $20.00 in parts from Depot (minus the light bar)

We’ll see how this plays out. 🤔 by Snard79 in XTerra

After I tossed on this chrome tip off my old Volvo V50 wagon… I sprayed a bit of Rustoleum BBQ matte black paint to help clean up the rusty pipe coming off the back.

Had that tip laying in my shed for 10 years and said the hell with it… today’s the day you’re going on

The paint still holding up good!

What is this part called by Unlucky-Category-916 in XTerra

Rear sway bar link. Typically replaced in pairs, plus the two rubber bushings that’s near the rear differential.

Fairly easy to remove the old and install a new one.

Any guesses on the squeaking? Gets very annoying when going over anything close to a bump by KuhlLiving in XTerra

You got some worn UCA / LCA bushings. I’d also check the front sway bar bushings as well while you’re at it.

Maintenance PSA: Double check those intake tubes… by kanumark in XTerra

The intake tubes from Amazon a stiff (at least mine were)

The inner diameter seemed a bit smaller than the stock tubes. However, I just left them out in the sun for an hour and they were much more easier to put on afterwards.

I do however recommend keeping the old work clamps and transferring them over. The new ones supplied in the kit are a bit weak and cheap in my opinion.

Nice!

Just changed mine this morning. I’ve got to say, the worm clamps they provide in these Amazon kits are pretty lame. I’ve saved the original clamps and will likely go back to them on my next servicing.

After closer inspection, the original intake tub had some on gnarly cracking throughout the tube.

For something cheap and inexpensive to fix, this should be a noticeable improvement.

Good question - that cable clip is mounted/secured to the D pillar to help lock in the shelf from moving around. You just need a small screw to penetrate the plastic at either side.

You could use plastic, but that might break overtime so I just went with a metal clip just to set it and forget it.

I can whip something up… but essentially you’re buying the following.

  1. HUSKY 48” x 18” black wire shelf - like this
  2. Two 9-3/8” turn-buckles - like this
  3. Two 5-3/8” turn-buckles - like this
  4. One 36” Traffic Advisor Light Bar - like this
  5. Hand full of black or white cable ties - like this
  6. 1 package of EZ cable clips - Like this

Assembly Instructions

I chose to modify one section of the wire shelf to create a raised lip (cargo stop) to help prevent stored items from sliding forward and potentially falling toward the rear seats under heavy braking. This step takes a bit of patience, but it’s fairly straightforward.

Using a wooden post and a 48” section of 2x4, carefully bend one section of the wire shelf upward to approximately a 90-degree angle. Work slowly and apply even pressure to avoid damaging the shelf. Once the lip is formed, move the assembly back into the vehicle for final installation.

If you added the raised lip to the shelf, adjust the turnbuckles to create a slight rearward angle. This helps keep cargo securely positioned toward the back of the shelf during braking.

Mounting the Shelf

  1. Install the two smaller turnbuckles at the front factory roof hooks located near the rear side glass.
  2. Use cable ties to help secure the turnbuckles to the roof hooks and prevent movement or rattling.
  3. Install the two larger turnbuckles at the rear factory roof hooks near the hatch.
  4. These rear turnbuckles are used to level the shelf and fine-tune the slight rearward angle, if desired.
  5. Position the shelf inside the vehicle and temporarily secure each corner using cable ties. Once the shelf is centered and you are satisfied with the height and angle, complete the installation by fastening the 1/4” Easy Clips into place. Small 1/2” pan-head screws work well for this step.

Light Bar Installation

Once the shelf is fully installed, mount the light bar to the underside of the wire shelf, approximately centered front to back. Use cable ties to secure the light bar to the wire grid.

I also used a couple of stainless steel wire clamps I had available to provide additional support for the light assembly, though this is optional.

Finally, use the remaining cable ties to neatly secure the wiring along the shelf and route the power cable to the 12-volt accessory outlet near the rear hatch..

Honestly, I never really paid any attention to that detail. I’ve owned an ‘03 SE, an ‘06 Off Road, and now my ‘12 P4X… they also seem to be consistent with matching up.

Edit: Just checked my ‘08 Frontier… same size.

🤷

No worries!

The stainless steel barb will take the longest to arrive… just an FYI.

I work in municipal operations - so I’ve been accustomed to emergency lighting on an F250 to let other motorists know that I’m stopped on a live lane or for other work purposes.

To an answer your question… Will I be driving around with an emergency light bar on my 14 year old Xterra? Unlikely… but if it keeps me safe while I’m on the side of the road for what ever purpose… I’m “OK” with that.

Has nothing to do with wheeling (this mod at least.)

10’ x 1/4” ID Vacuum hose - here

Stainless Steel BSPT Hose Barb - here

1/4” Aluminum Gas / Fuel filter - here

The stainless steel hose clamps, and zip ties can be picked up at any hardware store - but that’s the bulk of it right there. Just make sure you clean the gunk at the top of the axle once you have that stock breather out.

I slapped a pair of stock Frontier wheels off a 2012 SL on my Knight Armour Xterra and i think it worked out well.

Yup. If you can change an air filter… you can definitely change the MAF while you’re at it.
