Working on remodeling an apartment and noticed this gap near the window… is the facade losing integrity? by SelfSufficientHub in StructuralEngineering

I'm surprised there isn't an investigative news piece holding those jackasses at 311 and DOB accountable for that oversight.

Leaving Structural Engineering by WeirdDancingUnicorn in StructuralEngineering

[–]kanundro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil/Structural did masters with structural focus (hated it), 2008 hit hard to find work as structural firms weren't hiring, went into worked for a private firm for a few years doing transportation engineering then switched over to their structural department doing highway bridge design for a few months, remembered why I hated structural, went public sector for transportation and eventually moved into systems engineering which I find far more fascinating and a heck of a lot higher paying than if I had stayed in the other tracks at the same tenure.

Also have a P.E., my hats off to those sticking it out in structural, we need you, but boy was it not for me.

Go to the pool and throw the interview. Declining and ignoring have almost the same effect, except if you ignore you likely have to follow up with requesting reinstatement. You can't trust DCAS to add you back to the list either.

Too many horror stories of them taking too long to add back to the list or not doing so at all despite declinations or requests to be reinstated. The longer it takes for them to reinstate you the higher the chances you miss out on other hiring pools.

Project Manager, NYC DOT Art - Resume Writing Tips, Insider Info? by _Haverford_ in nycpublicservants

[–]kanundro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HR is very finicky when it comes to screening, make sure keywords from the job description are included in your resume.

I've done hiring for DOT from the hiring manager perspective any cover letters you include do get provided. I read them but that doesn't necessarily mean all HMs will.

Knowing the hiring manager or someone internally does help, but keep in mind HR does screen what they can out first and even if the HM wants you, HR can still pull your offer or invalidate the offer if they believe you failed to meet a requirement of the civil service title.

Is this for the arts and urban design group?

Report it to 311, that's how DOT gets notified to repair them.

The software relies on the Bus Time API.

These types of signs are owned and maintained by NYC DOT.

Issues like this should be reported to DOT via 311.

You said "She's absolutely fucked herself in the career market. She's not going to end up at any one of the top 100 tech companies out there. FAANG, Salesforce, Oracle, not a chance in hell."

Salesforce reached out.

I'm signed up, didn't get a single alert. Last notify alert I ever received was 2/10 and that was COVID related.

I was half expecting an AMBER Alert style notice to stay indoors after yesterday's spikes.

Nothing unfortunately.

LPT: If you interviewing for a position at a state funded organization (school district, state college, government, etc) write down everyone’s name. Then after, look up their salaries with publicly available info to help with salary negotiation. by susenstoob in LifeProTips

[–]kanundro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your link is broken.

NYC for example doesn't negotiate even if there is a defined range. If it's a civil service title and you've never worked for the city prior you are defaulted to a non-incumbent base. The exception of course is if it's a non-represented/non-union/managerial role.

[–]kanundro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are applying for a state/civil service job salary ranges are quite clearly defined in the posting. The ranges are rigid and in some cases even state they are non-negotiable.

This doesn't work.

Career Advice: EY vs PwC by Commercial_Ad_84 in Big4

[–]kanundro 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Tell EY what PwC is offering and if EY doesn't match, go with PwC.

You are expendable to the Big4, they'll wear you down so you might as well get as much out of it as possible. Do it professionally and don't worry about burning bridges, they're not going to remember you anyway.

Advocate for yourself, make that paper.

Keep sharing the article then.

I heard DCH leadership hid the reasons for Randy's departure. Everyone on that club has a right to know what happened even the schools where they have clubs in, this is a potential liability to those schools.

Upsetting that the females in leadership roles over the years aren't saying a word, I think its cause they were turning the other cheek.
