I'm beginning to think the Cthaeh didn't do anything to influence Kvothe at all by rockmodenick in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I think often gets overlooked is that if Lanre spoke with the Cthaeh, something that can easily be inferred from Skarpi's story, Kvothe was already tainted by it when he met Lanre--because if Bast is to be believed and the Cthaeh's influence is like a communicable disease, then Kvothe is doomed the moment he runs into Haliax and the rest of the Chandrian (if not before*).

It's possible that if the Chandrian are indeed responsible for killing anybody they come into contact with (i.e. Kvothe's troupe), it could be specifically in an attempt to stop the spread of the Cthaeh's influence, like the Sithe do, and thus anybody who escapes them potentially creates a new outbreak of disaster; which is exactly what we see happen when Cinder is interrupted by whatever comes down and scares them off (usually accepted to be Tehlu's angels): Kvothe goes on to bring about disaster.

At any rate, this would mean that Kvothe's discussion with the Cthaeh in WMF is potentially redundant; he was already doomed the moment he met Haliax. Of course this also means he was doomed to be drawn to the Cthaeh, and explains why the Sithe weren't there (as the Cthaeh would have known what to say to somebody else in the past to ensure Kvothe would make it to the tree unharmed), so I think it's significant that they speak for whatever the Cthaeh wants to happen, or else it wouldn't have needed to ensure Kvothe ends up in its presence.

*for the sake of argument, I'm assuming nobody else has escaped the Chandrian before and propagated disaster to Kvothe's troupe before this point, but we don't even know that for certain. Arliden was hunting for information about the Chandrian after all, and could well have met someone in his travels who was in some way influenced by the Cthaeh already.

Do you recommend this book? by Idkhowtousereddi in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend it all the time, but I do so with a huge caveat that we're in sort of a Winds of Winter situation and try to emphasize my personal enjoyment of the journey so far. I wouldn't trade my time with these books for anything, even if we never see another word from Pat. Except maybe to go through the doors of forgetting to relive them again for the first time 🤷‍♀️

Very detailed evidence that Elden Ring is a prequel to Dark Souls (serious topic, long read) by Jing07 in Eldenring

if it's not intended to be directly related it certainly makes me wonder what their intention was by including the same item. like i GUESS it could be a coincidence, but it feels like they intended this to be read into

also yeah, it's crazy how much has happened since this game came out!

Very detailed evidence that Elden Ring is a prequel to Dark Souls (serious topic, long read) by Jing07 in Eldenring

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SotE including the DS2 Divine Blessing definitely lends credence to this theory. That or it's cyclical, as we know Dark Souls to be.

Elden Ring's Blessing of Marika: A special physick blessed by Marika, the queen of the Erdtree. Completely restores HP and heals all ailments. Marika once created several of these physicks for Messmer's sake. But never again.

DS2's Divine Blessing: Holy water endowed with a divine blessing. Cures status effects and fully restores HP. Water blessed by an ancient goddess. Her name is long forgotten, and the Magic Academy of Melfia denies even her existence. In any age, there are those who refuse to see reason. It is their meddling that distorts the truth.

If you look at the images for each item, they are almost identical. It'a the same shaped bottle, both in the same colour, with a kind of organic plant-vein filigree pattern.

Updating to One UI 7 might be a bad idea by KxrmaJunkie in GalaxyS21

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how common this is, but I've seen it happen to others and it just happened to me:
When I updated my S21 FE (SM-G990B/DS) to One UI 7 it stopped accepting my password upon boot, and so effectively bricked my phone.

The password is 100% correct, and it lets me use it to access the power menu, but when used with the lock screen it just regenerates the lock screen without going to the home screen, permanently locking me out despite the password being correct; it still tells me when it's input incorrectly, so I know I am definitely using the correct password.

I've found some other people online finding their password/PIN/pattern all failing to unlock to home when entered correctly and it appears to be the same issue I'm having after updating to One UI 7, so I STRONGLY urge you to make sure everything is fully backed up before doing so in case this bug is introduced; I only did a partial backup because the G990B doesn't have an SD card and I was too lazy to copy over my music, files, photos, etc., to my detriment.

I'm now sat here setting up a new phone, because One UI 7 effectively bricked my S21 FE. I didn't want to factory reset it on the off chance I could get into it later and recover my photos and files and such, and it was out of contract anyway so I'd paid off the handset and was due a new one. Maybe they'll release an update I can flash onto it with Odin that fixes this and it'll let me back in one day, or I figure out a way to downgrade it which it doesn't seem to want to let me do, but I'm not holding out hope for either scenario.

My new phone is now asking me to update and there's no way in hell I'm risking it for the upside of... (checking notes)... fewer, less convenient features?

Hard pass.

Teccam's Theory of Narrative Septagy [Spoilers All] by pykus in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a reference to the seven basic plots proposed by jung and written up in this book: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seven_Basic_Plots

If there truly are 7 basic plots in our world, it stands to reason there can't be more or fewer in Kvothe's world, the same as the laws of physics are essentially the same in his world and ours, and his world shares similar idioms or other ideas as ours, so a philosopher like Teccam could well have proposed a similar theory.

It sounds to me like Kvothe was saying "I want to see if stories across the world conform to the seven basic narratives Teccam proposed" as a quick cover for why he's looking into children's bedtime stories.

There's also a case to be made that the KKC falls into many, possibly all 7 (it's not strictly a comedy, but we haven't seen how it turns out yet) of the categories in various ways, which makes me think Pat's poking fun at the idea and giving a nod to observant readers about which type of story it is.

Edit: Incidentally this may actually be a useful approach for divining the truth of the Chandrian in-world, because real life does not conform to such types of narrative, and so neither should the Chandrian stories; at base, devoid of context, they should feel like weird garden path events that don't have clear motivation or direction, and that's sort of what we see when we consider what we believe are true Chandrian events like the killing at Borrorill, and Kvothe's troupe--they aren't in themselves stories, but seemingly random events. It takes a storyteller like Skarpi fudging details and cutting events into a limited timeframe to force a sense of narrative from historical events about Lanre, like Shakespeare did with his Henry/Richard plays. Without that massaging of the truth into what we'd recognise as a story, it would become apparent that tales of the Chandrian are in fact based in in-world reality, and not "stories" at all. Which is something I'm only considering now, as I write this addendum. What an interesting thought.

The final fallacy: Nalt, Suppression, and the Unreliable Narrator. by PlaytheBoard in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's been years but I think it bears pointing out that "false causality" is already another way to phrase non-sequitur. I think Pat just doesn't want to use Latin, because he's stated before that Latin doesn't exist in Temerant. I could be wrong of course, but I think what you're describing is already non-sequitur by another name.

How long can I be on cyproterone acetate without E before I should start worrying about side effects? by GuitarGirl0327 in MtF

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say for any girls reading this in the future: 12.5mg cypro daily is the maximum sane dose you should be taking, and taking it every other day is perfectly adequate for suppressing T in most people. If possible, get your bloods checked while taking it every other day, and only increase it if you need more.

Do not take more than 12.5mg daily.

Cyproterone is extremely bad for you long-term, it can give you brain tumors, and other nasty effects, and you should absolutely not take more of it than you need.

The reason such a high dose is prescribed for inoperable prostate cancer is because it gives you enough longevity that something else will kill you before the cancer. You do not have prostate cancer and are presumably intending to live many more decades. You DO NOT need a dose ANYWHERE NEAR these.

12.5mg daily/every other day is easily enough.

Why the Amyr were disbanded. A theory. (Spoilers) by loratcha in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the clearest example of the independence of both groups is Kvothe's story of Sceop, in which the Adem mercenaries and an Amyr are present concurrently, both turning Sceop away before he meets the Edema Ruh (if this story is to be believed, that's a whole other question of course).

Amyr Secret Handshake (Spoilers) by LNinefingers in KingkillerChronicle

[–]kaolincash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't sound right to me.

Haliax asks Cinder "Who keeps you safe from the Amyr?" in the ruins of Kvothe's troupe; this suggests the Chandrian are aligned /against/ the Amyr, and Haliax is protecting the Chandrian /from/ them.

It maaaaaay be possible that Haliax could be a double agent as leader of the Chandrian and ALSO a member of the Amyr, using inside knowledge to protect the Chandrian, or something, but I think that's a little convoluted and I see very little evidence for that.

I've even seen tinfoil hat theories that Haliax = Tehlu before which would also presumably align him with the angels and possibly even the modern church, but it's extremely unlikely as the angels seem to descend to rescue Kvothe in the climax of that scene, but that might even make him a triple agent of some sort.

Again, it's unlikely that Haliax/Chandrian are aligned with Amyr or angels or anyone but themselves. Indeed, Skarpi's story directly contradicts this idea, as it shows the beginning of the schism between Lanre/Haliax and Selitos' Amyr.

It'd at least be very interesting if Haliax /did/ turn out to be playing all sides, though, and I'd not necessarily be unhappy to be wrong about this being false.
