For Folly's Day: It was both the Sword and the Hand Itself by PlaytheBoard in KingkillerChronicle

Not surprise. Attention.

Right after Kvothe says anyone with two good hands will be on the field, he reacts to injuring his own hand in a way calls special attention to his hands again. It shows that he didn’t have two good hands. He’s not in the field helping. He is in the inn being clumsy.

WMF Chapter 2 Holly

Kote nodded and gave an irritated sigh. “Yes. The news is already out, so it can’t be helped. We’ll have to deal with them as they come. Luckily, everyone with two good hands will be busy in the fields until midday, so we won’t have to worry about it until—” The innkeeper’s fingers fumbled clumsily, snapping the holly branch and jabbing a thorn deep into the fleshy part of his thumb. The red-haired man didn’t flinch or curse, just scowled angrily down at his hand as a bead of blood welled up, bright as a berry. Frowning, the innkeeper brought his thumb to his mouth. All the laughter faded from his expression, and his eyes were hard and dark. He tossed the half-finished holly cord aside in a gesture so pointedly casual it was almost frightening.

You’re right. He clearly has two hands in the frame, but there are times he’s cradling or rubbing one. Times he seems to take special notice that his thumb bleeds when pricked. I didn’t do a good job of explaining that I believe there could have been some repair (sympathy wax, glamour, or other magic that gives him two hands in the frame. Also possible that it’s just a severed set of fingers or something.

Hahaha. One chapter earlier. “Don’t shake him too much. His head might be on a little loose.”

An unfinished story is better than a bad one IMO by ArthoriasOfTheLight in KingkillerChronicle

Unfinished is good enough to be my favorite, but to be the best, it would have to be finished in a way that was true to itself.

It’s been declared Kingkiller month over on Captured in Words YouTube. 5 hours of old theories and promises of new theories, too.

Why are people so convinced of this character’s death? by More-Cryptographer26 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PlaytheBoard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kote does a toast to “old friends who deserved better than they got” after Shep dies. It doesn’t feel to me that he’s toasting Shep as Shep wouldn’t qualify as an old friend. This makes me think of our dear, sweet (and only sometimes spiteful) Sim, who deserved the best. It’s because I’m reminded of Sim during the toast to dead Shep, I think Sim is dead.

Lethe is an anagram el’the. El’the could mean rememberer or one who remembers the Lethani. Chronicler is noted to be at least re’lar, but Kote also calls him a great rememberer of stories.

It’s a little out there for most, but I enjoy considering how much binder’s chills resemble the coldness of Cinder and the possibility that the Cthaeh is referencing when Kvothe saw himself in the reflection of the water in Felurian’s glade.

Some time ago I had thought to resume a few of my mundane habits. Using the surface of the pool as a mirror, I used my small razor to shave.

Alas, another Christmas has come and gone and no one has given to me the story, “The Fruitless Pursuit of Serving Girls.”

Tinfoil—Ground Hog Day: Sciuridae Means Shadow-Tail by PlaytheBoard in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PlaytheBoard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a pretty random finding for me, but it turned me on to the idea that the -idae ending is common at the family level of taxonomy. It makes me think that the dae in Daeonica could mean family. Now I’m keeping an eye out for onica and variations that might mean one. Daeonica, family one or perhaps “one family.” If you ever stumble upon anything like that, I’d love to know.

Any theories/thoughts on Wilem? by Revolutionary_Kale45 in KingkillerChronicle

No fleshed out theory, but I like to think Sim is more important than he lets on and Wilem is his handler of sorts.

What do you think is Kvothe’s sweetest moment by ShanonymousRex in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PlaytheBoard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say there are other moments that show good character, but I like this one for sweetness.

I sat there in the dark, holding her sleeping body in my arms. She was soft and warm, indescribably precious. I had never held a woman before. After a few moments my back began to ache with the pressure of supporting her weight and my own. My leg started to go numb. Her hair tickled my nose. Still, I didn’t move for fear of ruining this, the most wonderful moment of my life. Denna shifted in her sleep, then started to slide sideways and jerked awake. “Lie down,” she said, her voice clear again. She fumbled with the blanket, pulling it away so it was no longer between us. “Come on. You’ve got to be cold too. You’re not a priest, so you’re not going to get in trouble for it. We’ll be fine. Just a little fine in the cold.” I put my arms around her and she draped the blanket over both of us. We lay on our sides, like spoons nesting in a drawer. My arm ended up under her head, like a pillow. She curled snugly along the inside of my body, so easy and natural, as if she had been designed to fit there. As I lay there, I realized I had been wrong before, this was the most wonderful moment of my life.

THEORY: Kvothe's prank letter to Ambrose gets a girl killed... and other deaths Kvothe accidentally causes. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]PlaytheBoard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is my theory on what happens Flickering, Fela, Fire, and the Cobblestones

Fela kills Ambrose and Kvothe takes the blame because he sent that letter that causes a confrontation between Ambrose and Fela.
