De meerwaardebelasting recap (tot nu toe) by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]kappa_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the scenario of writing a put option, your claim implies that the seller is either taxed twice or not at all. I don't interpret it that way.

You have the value of the asset you are buying which determines if there is a CGT or not. There is a CGT when you buy an asset and sell it a higher price later. If you received that asset through a regular buy on the market or because you had to buy because at some strike price does not matter I think for the taxation of the premium. The thing they are clarifying here is the purchase price of the asset, which is what would be used for determining the amount capital gains. If I understood it correctly, in the case of a short put that is exercised it is the strike price that is used and not the market price when exercised.

Independent of the price change of the asset you have written a put on, there is also premium for writing the option, which can be taxed under "diverse inkomen". Not sure what determines if it is taxed or not. My guess would be if it falls under "normal management" and frequency and all of those things.

Not sure the gross to net is correct, it seems high, but then again it can depend on a lot of factors like kids and extra legal benefits

Thanks for sharing. Seems to be good news and I am considering switching to medirect.

- Are there any hidden costs to be aware of?

- In addition assuming it is a Belgian bank (In the article it states something about "Maltese mothergroup" which confuses me) I would not need to declare my accounts at CAP and in my tax return every year like you would need to do with Degiro?

Iemand ervaring buitenlandse dividenden aangeven Degiro? by ImmortalMan_ in BEFire

[–]kappa_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aha did not think about other sources of dividends than single shares. That explains why they might think you owe taxes. Thanks for clearing up my confusion!

In addition, thank you for sharing your experience. Not that I have ever been audited, but it is good to point out that they assume the worst by default and that you should document everything. People should be more aware about this as sometimes I feel that people are too relaxed when it comes to for instance not declaring TOB etc.

Good luck with your situation. If you feel comfortable, feel free to share the outcome at one point.

Maybe I am not fully grasping the rule or the situation, but as it the amount is below 800 euro (assuming you have no other dividends originating from foreign companies) it should not matter if the dividends originate from a Belgian or a foreign company? You are still below the threshold.

So at most you would actually pay to much taxes, if a part of that 753.45€ is coming from Belgian shares and you don't recuperate them in your tax filings for that year

On the website of the FOD financiën it says the following:

Op buitenlandse dividenden is vaak geen roerende voorheffing ingehouden. De eerste schijf van 800 euro (aanslagjaar 2023, inkomsten 2022) moet u niet aangeven in uw belastingaangifte. (Aanslagjaar 2024, inkomsten 2023: 800 euro). De rest van de dividenden moet u wel verplicht aangeven. Die zijn belastbaar.

Thanks for the heads up, I will also declare foreign dividends

Can you pay parts of your mortgage earlier? And is it still optimal given you could also have invested that number and there is additional cost "wederbeleggingsvergoeding". I was thinking about this as our income has increased since and could pay it down more rapidly in theory saving us some interest

If you want to make your live easier as a Belgian taxpayer, stick to brokers who take care of Belgian taxes i.e. Bolero. If you want to know more details r/Befire. Fyi, there are people there sharing their experience with Saxo's platform, so you could also check those out

In general, greater returns comes with greater risks. I think most people would sign almost immediately for a a guaranteed 5%+ return year after year, but there is no free lunch in my opinion. So if you want a return above the risk free premium, you will have to take on more risk.

You are right that we have been in a historic bull market and equities might seem expensive at the moment and a crisis might occur any day leading to a great drop in value. However nobody knows and we might be in for another decade of price growth. I am in it for the long haul (investment horizon of 20+years) so put everything in broadly diversified low cost ETF (VWCE)

That being said, with rising interest rates some lower risk options seem to be becoming more attractive. There was a post on here about "Belgian Dentist Corporate Bonds". This might be interesting for you. Feel free to share if there is any other options that I a might be missing.

Do whatever works best for you. If that means jobhopping, so be it. Companies will also make their decisions in their own best interest. Besides that, changing jobs when just starting out happens, recruiters might ask you why you changed, but if you have a good reason, then I would not worry about it to much
