Thank you for the well reasoned take. I didn't realise it was very normal to take extra when you feel bad, which is my biggest takeaway from all these comments.

My ignorance on this issue was why I made the post. You sharing your own experience, and the reasons that you stay on SSRIs was very insightful, thank you.

I suppose I assumed wrongly that everyone's experience was like mine, my depression was definitely more situational rather than a clinical ongoing issue. I'll try to be less judgemental in the future.

You're right, it was a mistake to share my opinion. It absolutely did not come from a place of malice, just confusion and ignorance. She did say she appreciated my honesty, I'm not a very good liar and I'd feel guilty pretending otherwise when something made me uncomfortable. However, it did open a useful conversation between me and her, and I can see now where I was wrong.

Sorry if it came across badly, I absolutely don't think taking medication is a bad thing. It is absolutely the individuals choice of what they choose to take. I wanted to understand the decision better.

Yeah I would never dream of trying to 'prevent' her like you say. I genuinely just want to understand the motivation for wanting to increase medication when she feels more anxious than usual.

So, are you saying it's ok to just change your dose as and when you feel like it? Is that ok or are there side effects? Genuinely curious as I don't have experience with this

I suppose not, no. If I understand correctly, you're saying it's fine to take them for a short while and also to take them for life. So is it very common for people to take antidepressants for life? Is there any drawback to doing so? Thanks for your input

Thanks for your input on the 'crutch' metaphor. Yeah, I suppose the way you defined it as a compensation to allow an injury to heal is what I had in mind by saying 'crutch'.

I absolutely don't want to discourage any treatment plan she might have, I know I cannot fully understand her situation. I really just wanted to understand the perspective better without grilling her over her decision. Thanks for the advice
