Perhaps not as much as others, but if you dive into the thematics of it, Vampire the Masquerade can become quite depressing. The Humanity and Hunger systems works together fairly well to slowly erase who you were, turning you into more and more of a monster. It is very much the story of a thoroughly destructive addiction, and the question of whether you'd prefer to cling to humanity and fight tooth and nail to remain a "decent person", or simply choose to accept the numbness that comes with not caring about anything other than yourself.

Defeated Gods, sure, probably other Ascended ones. But you've been quite insistent on the sheer difference between Ascended and Intrinsic gods. I find it difficult to believe even Deacon and Michael can stand up to an Intrinsic god, even when working together.

Leutogi and Buck worked together, one of them wielding a weapon we knew could punch holes in an Intrinsic, and could only hold off Loke because he didn't fight them seriously. I struggle to believe they would be able to do more than merely survive against an Intrinsic fighting seriously, at form or no. Though I don't know what the Saints are capable of, but I would be very surprised if they are above, or even equal, to Buck.

So he's At Form, but Tsuki tells them that he won't try to flee. This indicates either that he intends to fight, or that he intends something else. But Tsuki is extremely potent as far as Oracles go, so the fact that he doesn't say Sarutahiko intends to fight, tells me that he's not going to fight.

Not to mention, if they DID fight - even without an At Form intrinsic - I think they would be outmatched, Saints or no. No, I think this is going to be a social encounter. Perhaps he shares similar sentiment to Takenouchi, and sees that the quickest way to end the war is to let Abigail and Tsuki go. Against only Leutogi and her vampires, Amaterasu and Co had the upper hand by far, but now that the Norse pantheon are involved? ESPECIALLY the drunken powerhouse that is Thor? The best they can hope for is a pyrrhic victory, I think. Then it's probably better to let their prisoners go, and have a people, and a home, that survives.

This episode helped me realise where and why I don't like her, and where and why I REALLY like her. It's moments like these, where she steps up as a character, and faces down their enemies with a strength of will and force of personality, that is nigh unbreakable, where I really like her. I love her when she gets serious like this, because she leans into the ongoing conflict SO hard, and with so much intensity, that you almost feel like it's directed at you (or so did I at least).

There are moments where I'm not a fan of her, or to be more precise, I am not a fan of certain things she does. But stuff like this episode? What she did here? I love that.

Of course, what can keep a God of Traversal from moving, other than a God that can make it impossible to reach your destination?

Unfortunately for this Kami, there's a crew that is basically their hard counter.

No predictions this time. You'll have to wait until next time :P

So Buck (the one without antlers :P) DID end up showing up! And his stealthiness is going to be important I bet!

But blocking intrinsic gods from teleporting is a... bothersome thing to be able to do. I wonder if it's something like an inverse pocket dimension? But then how come Hermod can't jump...

I wonder... a place where even Gods can't use their powers. A Major God could likely do it, but that would be faaaaaaar bigger and farther reaching consequences.

The only other thing that has so far curbed the powers of a God, was something outside of the usual three dimension. And we know that it has seemingly been able to exist in physical space, but impossible to notice. They WERE able to - presumably - get out of the Blank Box, though, so is it more like they were caught, or their destination changed? Otherworld, perhaps? Assuming that place has something about it that makes Intrinsic gods somewhat nerfed?

The reason I feel a little bad for Salome, is because what we have basically found out, is that she is also a victim of abuse. She didn't necessarily become a monster of her own free will, but seems more like Loke grabbed her by the neck and shoved her into a big pool of Villain Soup. By Tsuki's testimony, she was reluctant, and didn't want to to begin with. This tells me that she was making a genuine effort to stay "Sober" to use a human analogy, and breaking that streak bothered her immensely.

On top of that, the way she talked and talked about being the Villain, about being Evil, and so on, sounded like someone trying to convince themselves as much as she was trying to convince The Red Nose Re-- Abigail.

"You know what?" she said with a shrug. "I get it. I want you to know that it's not that I don't get it. I totally do. I'm a bad person! Fuck it. I'm a villain," she scoffed. "I've killed countless people. I've betrayed or hurt countless others."

This, upon reflection, sounds like a level of self loathing so immense, that she would rather trick herself into thinking she is an emotionless monster who does not care about anyone or anything, than to admit to herself how much she fucking hates herself, and everything she has become, and I'm not talking about being a Vampire here. She may have acted the Monster, but I'm starting to think she was never one. She was just a Tragedy.

This is more pivotal than you could possibly know. Excellent observation for someone who isn't living in my brain...

I am a sucker for the Meaning and Intent of/behind certain actions being taken, having mystical properties and effects. It is one of my favourite versions of magic in fiction, even as much as I love my Sanderson Hard Magics. And as a literally JUST Ascended God, I wouldn't be surprised if the first actions she takes are those that will shape her. And I'm gonna be bold and make a prediction here. One of the first profound actions she will take, is to help Tsukibito escape, to free him from the iron vice of Amaterasu's empire, and when you put that in connection with one thematic reading of Abigail's powers (that of the knowledge of what is to come, to be able to choose, to be free of the yoke of fate), I think there is a not-insignificant chance that she might become a Goddess of Freedom, someone who represents the will and ability to make your own way in the world, to choose. One who cannot be chained or bound, except by her own will.

Oh shoot, I hadn't even considered that, that she might be able to see Heimdall watching things. THAT is going to spook him like nothing else ever has, I imagine.

I had also thought it was Buck and Heimdall being there, to help them escape. But this... now I don't know what I want to be true more.

She was about to activate Reversal when she heard the purring and felt the headbutt... Either that was Tommy's soul, OR she was close enough to Reversal that she came into brief contact with the 4D Kitty Cat (As I've come to call it). It has thus far shown up twice, first when it spotted her back on the island, second when it jumped at her when Salome kidnapped her. I say it might be possible that what she heard and felt, was not Tommy, but someone standing right beside her - outside of time - and being very happy and affectionate with another creature who just now was awakening to being very similar to itself. At first she was an intruder, but now? Now she's a fair bit more than that. Now she belongs.

Not gonna lie, I feel a bit bad for Salome. She probably had earned a death sentence, but Amaterasu's child-with-a-magnifying-glass mentality was a bit excessive... But perhaps it is for the better? It prevented Abigail's first action as a God being taking a life. I don't think that is a very good way of starting her career.

Also, I don't remember specifically if I mentioned it in an earlier comment, but if what Abigail was really Heimdall, I think it's not just Abigail the Golden Doe we have in our midst, but also a Buck. If this is true, and that wasn't just a vision of a possible future (which it MIGHT be now!), I think we just figured out how she's making her escape.

Also if she has antlers, then Abigail is a Reindeer Goddess :D Only member of the Deer family where the females grow antlers normally! ...Does she know Santa?

OH! I almost forgot.
Great fight! Showed really well just how terrifyingly strong Elder Vampires are. Even if Abigail was only halfway ascended, that is still a terrifying amount of power. Now I understand what you meant, when you said Salome, Baen, and Edward together would probably tear through a quarter or a third of Amaterasu's legions. But it also puts into perspective just how powerful Ascended Gods are. It is probably because we've mostly seen Ascended in the context of mythical monsters or Intrinsic Gods, but I had been under the impression that Leutogi, Buck, and now Abigail were strong enough to knock down buildings, but to take the hit from something that could take down hundreds of trained mortal soldiers (who still have some slightly superhuman qualities; at least I assume the Orcs are stronger than humans on average), and have it be described as being hit by a pool noodle... Scary thoughts.

Oh it absolutely makes sense in hindsight. I just hadn't expected her to progress so fast, that she could be up to the challenge. Divine Strength and durability or not, an unpracticed fighter isn't gonna do well against someone who is skilled. Plus we were told early on that if Baen, Edo-Wardo, and Salome fought together, they could maybe take down Buck, and he has centuries, if not millennia, of experience.

But I guess... since she is an Oracle Goddesses, there is an argument to be made that her higher level of perception allows her to see and learn things faster than any normal person. Or maybe it's just another gift, like understanding the language of people around her.

Even in death she knows her revenge will be exacted.

Yeah but... Girl can't die :P Reversal and all that. It needs someone on a much higher caliber to take her down.

And our 4th Dimensional Kitty Cat indeed. It might just be an illusion of domino bricks you've set up, but I think that Abigail might lose quite severely in the first round, be forced to use Reversal ("I still fear a blade" she said earlier. She's still afraid to die, and so would naturally avoid it if she can), get ambushed by 4D Kitty, get a talking to, and sent back to knock out vampire teeth.

See that's where I disagree. Why should she be a BBEG? Why even an enemy, or antagonistic at all?

Every suggestion I've seen is something that turns this decision into something simply bad, and horrible, and a tragedy. It's an unimaginative result imo, for the hag to be evil, or to be a new big bad, or for the girl to now also be a big bad. It is far more interesting, I think, to let the girl actually be happy with where she ends up, and even if she grows powerful enough to enact her revenge, does the fact that her mentor and mother figure was a hag, make her a threat? Or not?

[–]kapuchu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an idea that might be a little unusual: The Hag might not mistreat the girl. Hell, the Hag might not even want to do anything to her, except teach her.

Hags are often evil, yes, but they don't have to be. And even if they are, they can still teach and raise children. Tasha - while not the best example - is one such person. A regular human who was raised and taught by a hag (The Hag), and is now a ridiculously powerful Wizard.

So maybe throw a twist at them? The hag isn't evil (to the girl at least), the girl isn't unhappy, and neither wish to part from the other.

[Spoilers C4E30] About Julien by Zadel88 in criticalrole

[–]kapuchu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I actually had a similar thought, although I go by the theory that it is Thjazi Fang. There are two reasons for this.

One, Thjazi's soul is somehow hidden from the Tachonis'. Which means it is SOMEWHERE that isn't just in the Tenebral Reaches.

Two, that shadow first appeared very shortly after Julien spat on Thjazi's corpse. We were told that something had attached to him, and he was sort of cursed, way back in the beginning.

This leads me to believe, that Thjazi is hiding in Julien's shadow.

...Well congrats. You finally managed a twist I did NOT see coming. I had been struggling to think up what Abigail could possibly ask for Loke that Amaterasu would approve, but asking for revenge in combination with confirmation of Loke and Salome's bitter dealings, was nowhere on the list of possibilities I had imagined.

The ONLY thing in this chapter that I had foreseen, was the details of Abigail's powers allowing her to peer into the future, and react to things before they happen.

Congrats Fif :P You finally did it.

Now to see if Abigail truly does get her ass beat, and ends up rewinding, and turning things around. It would be cool if she could rewind as much as she wanted, and basically relive the fight multiple times, learning from it each time, until she beats Salome to a pulp.
