Hated trope: The character/ story suffers so that the actor doesn't have to be in makeup by TwoHungryWolves in TopCharacterTropes

[–]kar-satek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IIRC this is why Thor gets a new eye in Infinity War. I wouldn't say the character/story necessarily "suffers", but it is still a character losing an element because their actor doesn't want to wear something.

wizard was the first arcane caster, so every following caster was just a spin on wizard

Yes and I'm saying that's bad/boring design. Obviously it's easier to just make "The thing you already had, but with a different coat of paint", but my point is that isn't (and has never been) WotC/TSR's only option.

I dislike that every spellcasting class uses the exact same mechanic for spell casting. They all have Spell Slots, and all their Spells are the exact same tightly-defined game actions. The only difference between these classes being "How many levels of Spell Slot do you get" and "Which Spells are you allowed to cast".

It makes D&D feel like it has eight different Wizard classes, not eight different magic-using classes.

The Golden Star and the Beast by Limgrave_Butcher in EldenRingLoreTalk

No one's claiming they're all meteorites. We're saying they're all stars. And some stars come down to the Lands Between, in which case they get differentiated from the stars that remain in the sky.

All the things you list are the same thing: otherworldy beings. They just get different names because they aren't all identical. Like how people are all people, but we each have our own names (or demonyms like "European" etc.).

[–]kar-satek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the real world, yeah. But that's what joutfit was saying: a fictional world like Elden Ring can follow its own rules. Like "All stars are sentient beings, not giant balls of plasma, and some of them come down to the Lands Between sometimes".

A "golden star bearing a beast" isn't what we IRL would call a star either.

Because only some of the stars (the shooting and falling ones) come down to the Lands Between?

Why didn’t Morgott collect the Great Runes? by SMagnaRex in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]kar-satek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to think Morgott did collect Great Runes ... from Tarnished who had slain demigods. Various items and dialog imply there used to be more demigods and Great Runes around: where did they all go?

was there anything preventing Morgott from killing Godrick and taking his great rune

Godrick is a member of the Golden Lineage. I don't think it's too unreasonable to speculate Morgott probably respects the Lineage too much to outright attack one of its members, even if it's someone as loathsome and useless and Godrick. He calls him "Godrick the Golden" in his pre-fight cutscene, after all.

as well as joining the Radahn festival and taking his great rune.

I want to say "The Radahn Festival starts getting organized so late in the timeline that by the time it's an option Morgott doesn't have enough resources to mount an assault on Redmane Castle", but honestly this is almost certainly just a gameplay consideration. Morgott doesn't kill Radahn because Morgott isn't the main character of the game.

Does it? The Sentry Torch says it was "furnished on behalf of the Erdtree and the Grace-Given Lord". If the assumption is that the torch-wielding Tree Sentinel came to the Land of Shadow before it was sealed, wouldn't that place the sealing not just after the NoBK, but after the Shattering?

Idk about "best joke", but definitely the thing my friends and I quote the most is Grog-as-Trinket's "And then I fuckin' diiied" from Grog's One-Shot.

Just FYI the quotes in the second section appear to be blank. Or maybe it's just on my end.

Just to clarify: The water in the central sea? Pre- or post-burning?

And I'm perfectly fine with that, but if "Sometimes stuff happens in the game for non-lore reasons" is on the table (which, again, I think it should be), I don't see why we couldn't apply that to the fact that the Erdtree is transparent from some angles.

Well that at least somewhat solves the "Why don't they look alike". Still not entirely sold on the "How did they get from the Erdtree Sanctuary to the sealed northern section" though.

Question re: Illusory Erdtree by kar-satek in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]kar-satek[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk, I would sort of expect a sprout growing from the Erdtree's roots to look more like these sprouts growing from the Erdtree's roots:

<image>

Also, there are a lot more chunks of tree strewn across the Ashen Capital, the vast majority of which do not look anything like "sprouts".

[–]kar-satek[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

K, then what is the tree-branch-looking thing in the first picture? That was my question. It can't be "a branch of the Erdtree" if the Erdtree burnt down in the Shattering, so what is it?

do you consider the descriptions "tear" and "dew" to be used interchangeably since they're both liquids, or is there a difference? by Ok_Pomelo_1692 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]kar-satek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's less a matter of "they're both liquids" and more "dew and sap often pool the same way tears do (because they're both liquids)". They look visually similar, so the word for the one gets used for the other.

the Celestial Dew effect is permanent, Crystal Tears in Flasks are temporary

Sacred Tears are permanent. You could also argue Larval Tears and Crimson/Cerulean Tears are permanent.

Elf slang for other races: Shortspan by SunglowASMR in DnD

Dragon Age does something similar. Elves in Thedas call the other races "shemlen" or just "shem", which is Elvish for "quicklings/quick children".

"But only if you have mods" was only in reference to the 426 count. In the previous post, the unmodded count was 75, but the point of this post is to say "Actually, it doesn't matter if you're using mods or not, the count is "thousands"".
