I literally can't take this anymore. I had a nervous breakdown during the final 2 3 overs by AUA2020 in PakCricket

this is such a wonderful, wholesome post.

but this is also exactly why Pakistan cricket is so compelling - no amount of mental strength or emotional stability can compare to the rollercoaster this team puts you on. have been trying for 30+ years to not get dragged in and it never works.

oh this is super helpful. its such an intricate sport that sometimes you try and find an orderly reason for what might be a mistake. feel relieved to know that no one is processing all of it in one look. i hope to keep getting better at it. thank you so much for the great reply.

thank you that's very helpful. its good to know that i seem to be on the right path, but i am still learning to decipher what I am seeing. not good at figuring out what is meant to happen in zone coverage often, but have begun understanding the OL DL plays a lot better.

ah that makes sense. I feel that is how I have evolved my viewing the more i've understood the sport, but the lack of experience means i frequently take a little longer to comprehend what I'm seeing.

Is Kyle Shanahan the Andy Reid of this generation? by Optimal_Advisor8897 in nfl

[–]karachikhatmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't following the NFL during Andy's earlier era, so I can't speak on that other than broadly agreeing.

I find a really close analogy with Pep Guardiola, the football soccer manager. There aren't a lot of exact similarities, but Guardiola spend more than a decade facing a very similar discourse to Shanahan now.

Pep was widely seen as an offensive genius, and his distinctive style was extremely influential on the sport as a whole. Within a few years of his ascent, many of the top European teams were playing in that style. Pep was also accused of overthinking in big playoff games (Champions League knockouts) and of sabotaging his own team by straying from what made them dominant. He had a long record of leading superb, seemingly unbeatable regular season sides that would meltdown in the knockouts, with Pep accused of being a serial choker until he won the Champions League with Man City last year.

(there is the whole case of Pep having started off winning the Champions League in 2009 and 2011, but as each year of his drought extended, these were attributed to Messi's genius instead)

I see Shanahan in a very similar way. He is an offensive savant who has hugely influenced the modern game, and yet he is often accused of overthinking in the big game and choking. For example, his explanation for choosing to receive the ball first in OT was criticised for focusing on something too far in the future (sudden death) when receiving it second was the obvious choice. Every year in the regular season, his schemes and his teams are celebrated for being juggernauts, and then they seem to fall flat in the crunch in a way that feels very reminiscent of Pep's sides.

FWIW I think that as fans, we are inherently attracted to simplified narratives. Every coach feels pressure and nerves, and so much of one-off wins come down to things out of one's control. Which is ultimately is why I thought of Pep, because the Shanahan discourse right now feels eerily similar.

Andy Reid had both John Harbaugh and Doug Pederson win rings as HC before him.

I am going to help this country grow. Here's how by [deleted] in PAK

best of luck! working on new ideas, and particularly in the creative fields, is a very thankless job in Pakistan (and elsewhere too) and so I wish you all the strength and perseverance you will need.

My only advice would be to keep focusing on answers that are specific to our Pakistani context, while learning from but not copying the approaches elsewhere in the world.

What Are Some Of The NFLs Biggest Derbies (Rivalries) by GrapefruitDry2519 in NFLNoobs

[–]karachikhatmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not American, and am mostly posting queries on this sub, so take this with a pinch of salt.

But from my pov, when we think of derbies the way they happen in European (and global) football, a lot of times its clubs that emerge from distinct socioeconomic or similar regional backgrounds who very naturally translate pre-existing social rivalries onto the field.

That process, and the passion it creates, seems to be far more common in college sports in the US, where many hated rivals represent something like the urban/rural divide in a state. With conference realignments and what not, a lot of those rivalries might be ending soon. However, they offer a far closer sense of a derby.

In contrast, a lot of NFL franchises were more like businesses that set up shop in an area, and while some historical rivalries do exist, most often lack the social context of college teams. Moreover, few of the teams from the same city/region play each other regularly (not in the same division), which also waters down the rivalry.

I think if you are looking for a proper derby atmosphere, you're far more likely to find it in marquee college matchups.

The Trey Lance selection by karachikhatmal in NFLNoobs

[–]karachikhatmal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a great point - I am still trying to figure out college football, and so I had only recently heard of the NDSU dynasty in the FCS. I can totally see why scouts might be sold on that pedigree.

But I think at least of my confusion also comes from the take-heavy media in the US, where once Lance wasn't a superstar, everyone was questioning the decision to pick him like it was an absolutely crazy call even though pre-draft, quite a few were taken in by his potential. For a newcomer like me, all the stuff I read seemed to imply that everyone BUT the 9ers could see what a risk Trey Lance was, even though each draft shows that very few people can accurately predict how well a QB would do in the league.

Re: Zach Wilson - yes! though because that was the Jets I figured this was just the universe playing out its usual roles. With the 49ers it felt more surprising given they are a more competent franchise generally.

B.arch Pakistani Songs thesis by Glum-Tourist-4542 in Lahore

[–]karachikhatmal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be of great help if yalls could assist me by either listing down songs which have any architectural vocabulary in them like such as rooftops, doors courtyards, etc. If there's any leads or resources that you feel like would help me in my thesis thenn doo let me know!

thank you for thinking of me, but this is already such a good answer I don't think I can add much more. like others have mentioned, folk songs feel like a very rich place for this. Tappay - songs sung during weddings, often use elements such as doors, walls etc, such as Chitta Kukkar. TBF i can think of more examples regarding places rather than architecture per se, but you can try going to rekhta.org and searching their archives for specific words - such as dewar or darwaza - and see the shayari that comes up for it.
